Should I buy HP Envy x360? Common Problem Broken Hinge

HP Envy x360 has a manufacturing defect: the hinges.
After 23 months, the screws of the hinge came out, released the hinge and broke the screen.
HP acknowledged it is a manufacturing defect that happens since 2018. HP did not fix it, continues to sell defective laptops and doesn't repair the damages if your HP Warranty has expired.

Sorry everyone has had to go through this, including myself. My HP Envy x360's hinge recently failed and I am unable to open or close my laptop. After conducting research, I discovered that there have been several class action lawsuits initiated on this matter. I am in the process of writing a letter to the Federal Trade Commission on behalf of all individuals who are being taken advantage by this giant corporation. The practice of selling defective laptops and laptops with faulty, defective parts is wrong, and someone needs to put a stop to it. The consumers (we) need protection!

I totally agree with you. I would love to have access to the class action. Unfortunately, I am not American citizen. As this issue happens since 2018, I am thinking that HP doesn't fix it on purpose: selling a screen panel at 450 USD (the price at which HP sells the full unit to shops). In that way HP make a huge profit margin. A kind of engineering scam.

@@minusculebloom A class action has been filed in the District of Delaware claiming HP has knowingly continued to sell laptops prone to becoming unusable when a plastic hinge part breaks. The action was reinstated Feb 17, 2022. You can google to follow the case. Some of us might be stuck with our defective, unusable laptops, but I hope this will put a stop to this unethical, deceiptful practice so that future customers do not have to go through this.

If your screen or hinge fails, i recommend plugging it into hdmi and into a monitor or tv to retrieve your information

I had a hinge issue on the same model. The problem arose just 10 days after the 12 month warranty expired! I rang HP Australia and they were actually pretty good. They admitted that it's a known issue with this model, so it's booked in for a free repair this week. Fingers crossed.

Absolutely surprised you had this experience. I basically had the opposite with HP Australia when mine failed back in March, causing my screen to crack in the process. They essentially told me "any laptops have problems" and that I should look into buying a new laptop because it will be costly to repair. They were totally unhelpful and kept trying to blame me for it and refused to fix it out of warranty. I would be very interested to know what the outcome was of your case. Currently tossing up whether I should bother taking it to NCAT or if they will just give HP a free pass as per usual.

I feel really bad to hear that this is a common issue because 3 years ago I purchased an hp envy x360 and recently the screen got broken the same way with the same pin , this was a really bad time cause I have my finals and absolutely need a laptop to study . I really don't know what to do, because I'm worried that if I fix my laptop will it brake again or not , hp has been a grate brand for me but after this I don't think I will ever buy again from them

I had exactly the same problem, and looks like I have the same computer model as you as well. I managed to get mine repaired out of warranty, however the lid for this model has since been discontinued which my repair required as well as a new hinge, and so I had to settle for a damaged second hand top. Tonight, the same problem has happened again. It’s a terrible model. I won’t be buying HP again.

@@minusculebloom I got it repaired the first time in March this year. It took longer than what it should have as they had to search for a lid that fitted the model. The newer models are a slightly different design that pinched the sides and created screen problems. Having had a HP laptop prior to this one which also had tech problems, I just don't feel that they are a very good computer manufacturer. I'll be avoiding them next item I buy a new one

I bought two Envy X360 laptops for my son and daughter to use in college. The left hinges broke on BOTH laptops a few months after the warranty expired. My daughter was lucky and did not experience the cracked screen. My son was not lucky and the hinge malfunction also caused his screen to crack/break.

I see I am not the only one who has had this issue with HP I have the exact same situation they claim there's nothing I can do because the warranty has expired. I explained to the man at HP customer service that I looked on the internet and there's at least 1 million hits on this exact same topic, the call was escalated to someone else I am waiting on a response hopefully I get my laptop fixed for free. This is a HP issue they need to fix it. this laptop goes for 1000 dollars when I bought it, stop robbing people and use quality parts.

I'm shopping for a new HP laptop, and when I was at the store and tried to open an Envy, I thought if anyone had an issue with the hinges, it didn't feel that sturdy to me. i have an old Pavilion m6, plastic hinges, but they lasted 7/8 years before breaking, not 2!

Omg 😳 I’m from Canada but i live currently in Japan and today i was going to buy this laptop but i was so lucky to come accidentally to this video! 😮 i definitely decided not to buy it after i saw 250 comments from people that faced the same issue and had a nightmare with HP . The problem isn’t exclusive to this model only but a lot of other HP laptop models as well. I have friends who live in Europe who was unlucky to buy normal HP laptops ( not 2 in 1 / convertible) and had huge issues with them . Some of my friends ended up smashing their Hp laptop with anger 😢 Me myself is a regular user for Lenovo laptops . I owned lenovo 360 convertible since 2016 until 2023 and been closing and opening the hinges roughly on daily basis and nothing happened until now. But the only reason i wanted to switch to this HP model that they said it’s smaller and lighter than Lenovo ! But now i know it’s not worth it. I advise everyone to buy Thinkpad Lenovo convertibles as they’re really the toughest business laptops in the market. They’re even used on board of the space stations and the rough engineering environments. Avoid buying HP , DELL , Panasonic laptops at all costs.

Lenovo may not have hinge problems but Lenovo laptops run hot, even when the ac charger is not plugged in. Spent a lot of money and a Lenovo Yoga- less than 2yrs of service. Add Lenovo to the list of lousey build quality. HP and Lenovo have successfully driven me to Apple MacBook because of a robust hardware build quality.

I had an HP envy from I believe 2013. In the year or so that I used it, it got "very" light use. I think we only used it to pay a few bills online. I didn't game on it, and it was not a daily computer. After about a year or so of owning it, I went to open it and the hinge pushed the plastic shell apart (below the keyboard. It didn't break the screen. I had my wife take it with her to Cambodia during her vacation and she was able to get it repaired there. I still never used the laptop though, and I will never recommend an HP product anymore. It was a nice "looking" laptop, but ultimately the build quality was the worst I have ever seen. I recently got an Alienware laptop and I am very happy with the quality build so fall. But steer clear of HP, get an apple, get a dell, hell even get a lenovo...

I have 2 HP laptops, an Envy x360 and an EliteBook x360, same issue on both (luckily the screens are not yet damaged). It IS clearly a design issue / fault on their side. I recommend to avoid these x360 models, sooner or later this can happen.

Same happened with me. I bought a brand new one and exactly after one year of use, its right side hinge gave it and was unable to close the laptop. Now gave it for repair and they are asking me for almost 500 usd for changing the lcd panel 13.3 FHD panel. Don't know why do they need to change the whole panel for this simple issue. I was under my two year warantee but they told me that "we have no problems with hinges so we cannot repair this broken hinged computer even though you are within your two year warantee"!!! I then did computer search on my hp laptop and saw so many people complaining about hinges and actually there is a class action lawsuit. Good luck with your lawsuit and all people stop buying hp. Maybe then they'll build a better computer or will take care of their product!

The class action has been closed. HP paid to shut it down. I think the goal of HP is to sell is a new panel at 4x the price when hinges break. At first HP asked me USD450 to replace the screen and the hinges. I bought the laptop USD 950 (including 21%). Knowing that the shops buy each unit between 50-60% of the retail price, that HP profit margin for this unit is around 10% and the screen is max 15% of HP cost, we know that the cost of the screen is max USD 60. Then by selling just the screen panel at the price they sell to retailers to the unit, make it looks HP is a scam.

Wow, so this is a common problem? My hinge broke too and shattered my screen completely. Initially they refused to repair it, but after continuous arguments, they finally agreed. I have had this laptop for 2 years, and i can say for sure, it's the worst laptop ever made. The problems just won't stop coming until you throw this laptop away. Sound problem, microphone, display, touch, etc. Every now and then, i get a new problem with this laptop. I absolutely hate this model.

HP Envy owner for little over a year, bought the HP Envy as an early grad school graduation present, unfortunately. My HP Envy is forever opened and carefully turned on each time because any sudden movements, the screen will go all crazy. The screen is not broken but the hinge pushed the screen off, any attempts at closing the laptop, I think will crack the screen. VERY DISAPPOINTING for the price, the lack of customer service help, and my first laptop buy. Will be taking my business elsewhere, looking at Acer next, WAY cheaper and so far, I can’t find any hinge problems. HP Envy is a joke 😂 other than the broke hinge, the laptop was great, I can’t stand the hinge was the downfall and HP KNOWS ABOUT IT!!! (No longer portable, almost like a “desktop” laptop now) 😢

My Hp envy has been repaired. I used it as a desktop (always open) as it has been repaired with same hinge system. Therefore I know it will break again. My next laptop will certainly be Lenovo yoga. As per I know the quality is great.

I bought my HP ENVY x360 13 in September 2020, January 2022 a problem appeared with the hinge. Repairs by authorized service are covered by the warranty. January 2024 a similar problem reappeared with the broken hinge mount (back cover). This time I was asked to cover 2700K IDR ~ 172.74 USD myself. I just realized that many people have experienced similar cases with Envy.

I think it will break again some time because the repair was half a year ago and it now starts to make sounds while opening and closing. I was thinking as well to switch to Apple, but there are some issues regarding softwares and hardwares compatibility and the expensive proprietary apple products made me change my mind. I really like my envx x360 since i got the top model with a ryzen octa 1tb and 16gb ram but im pissed if the screen fails again, infact im done then with that machine and with windows laptops in general.

Dont pay it. HP crook team gonna ask you around USD 450. Better to buy a new laptop from another brand. Because they gonna repair with same inches system and it gonna break again. BUT it is manufacturing defect you must call them to force them to repair the unit at no cost.

Depends where you are. In US there is class action, in Europe you have 2 years warranty, etc... I had to push and I really lost my nerves with them but after a month they decided to repair for free. It is time and energy consuming. And be aware they repair with same system therefore it gonna break again in near future. Now I use my envy as desktop, I never close and open to the screen panel anymore. A shame. My recommendation: never buy HP anymore

@@no-rz1sv The best solution is to keep your laptop always open and use it in desktop mode. I know it is annoying. I am doing it as well, even after the repair. I know that it will break again as it is the same connection system used. Furthermore more cases have been reported that few weeks after the repair it broke again.

Hi Maryrose Dela Cruz, First, sorry to read that it happened to you as well. Second, my laptop wasn't under warranty anymore, I had a lot of calls with HP customers Service and it was a month of struggles to finally get it repaired by HP. You should not give up because it is a manufacturing defect. Therefore it is HP responsibility to cover the damages. I recommend you to call many times and post on social medias (i.e. KZbin as I did) to get a bit more power in the negotiation. Let me know how it goes. All the best.

I also had the same issue (hinge problem) on this Envy x360 product, even it happened three times on the same unit/laptop. The first issue happened when the warranty was still active (8 months before expired), so I received a new unit. The second issue happened 5 months after the warranty expired. The unit was repaired with an affordable cost of 300,000 Indonesian Rupiah (+- 20 US dollars). Then, 2 weeks ago, the third issue happened (4 months after second issue), with the same issue (hinge problem). Unfortunately, the service operator offered an estimated cost of 4,000,000 Indonesian Rupiah (about 267 US dollars) to solve this third issue. I chose to cancel the offering and recalled the unit from the HP service center. These three same issues on the same unit show the poor quality of the hinges on the Envy x360 laptop

​@@yi-ning9698I went to an HP Service Centre in my city (Mataram, Indonesia) and showed the Envy 360 unit with the hinge problem. The staff glanced at the unit and said they would have to do a more detailed check to determine if the problem was caused by deliberate factors or product failure. After three days I was informed that the unit had been repaired. I was quite surprised to receive a new unit wrapped in plastic on the LCD screen and fingerprint button. They conclude that the problem was caused by product failure and since the warranty period was still active, all damaged parts were replaced with new ones for free. The staff also said the total cost for the service was equal to or even exceeded the price of a new Envy 360 unit. Actually, the unit is not totally new since the product serial number on the bottom cover has not changed, and neither has my personal data on the SSD.

Of course, no news from HP. Never had to deal with such poor quality product and poor customer service.

I don't know how you can open a case in India. It is a manufacturing defect and design issue at the conception stage. Contact HP and push them to repair it for free.

This happened with me too within 3 months of buying the laptop and i got them to give me a new but it took me atleast 3 months and around 600 calls and this happened again today also with the replacement laptop i am going to file a case against them i am so done with them

Contact HP agian over their service programm. I also had a faulty hinge and a damaged screen. It broke 14 Months after i had it. They Repaired it without an issue and for free. I think the have to do it in the first 2 years. How old is your laptop?

@@essa8724 launch your "hp support assistant" programm on your x360, it should be preinstalled. there you can check if its under warranty. UK is not a problem. Im from Germany, they shipped the laptop to Hungary or Bulgaria to repair.

i have the same problem. i bought same laptop in 2017 in the uk but when i left to korea in 2018, thats when the hinge broke. i visited the local hp shop and they couldnt help because the material needed wasnt distributed to korea. i wonder if other countries would have the material and if it could be fixed for free since its a defect. how much does it cost to fix it in your local currency?
