I always bust em out. Just cracked out a 1927 st gaudins in MS 64. They look so much better raw. As for modern bullion, I find it a silly waist of money to slab them. It offers no extra value and just about every coin is a MS 70 if you get it in front of the right person. I tried a little experiment with a ms70 ase to see how it would come back with repeated submissions. I sent it in 4 times. 3 ms69 and 1 ms70 even though it was originally a ms70. I collect metals and coins, not plastic and stickers. Free the coins!

@@electrochemical.army. I get that, some coins are valuable enough to slab. I've just always liked holding my coins, even without gloves if you can believe it. I wasn't always so against stabbing, but imho it has hurt the hobby. People put way to much value in the slab. I see so many beautiful coins unwanted because they have a details grade. Coins that if they were raw people would really want. But because some schmuck saw a few tiny hairlines and decided it was a cleaning it becomes unwanted. A absurd situation imo. Don't even get me started on those silly cac stickers. Although the cac stickers do kinda prove the slabbers suck at their job. Nobody trusts them so they send it off to be graded again.

As a relatively new collector (last five years), I don't really get into MS70 modern coins. I do, however, enjoy classic coins like mercury dimes, wheat cents, etc. I especially love filling up dansco coin albums; this makes up the bulk of my collection. When I only had the 1909-s vdb and 1922 plain holes left to fill in my lincoln cent album, I broke out my slabs to fill up those last two holes. I do keep the label from the slab, however, and I put it with the album.

If you don't have a Sigma precious metals identifier, BE VERY VERY CAREFUL buying a slabbed coin that you are not able to accurately measure and weigh. There are ALOT of fakes out there. Trust me. 😞
@danmckeever5992 жыл бұрын
I would argue that the buy/sell spread is tighter with a raw coin than with a stabbed. Sure the dealer will pay more for a stabbed than a raw... but he will sell for even more. So while the spread may be 3% for raw gold is probably closer to 5-10% slabbed.
@2is1gold2 жыл бұрын
The coin is a great choice. The deal was incredible. Beyond that, it’s subjective. All of us would have jumped on the deal whether there was extra potential for premium in a sale or not - it was $250 less than a raw Eagle - not all of us want the slab. For me, the fact that it was graded didn’t add anything. Over the 10 or 20 years I’ll have it, the awkward storage isn’t worth a bit of extra potential profit. Somebody else might already have slabs. It would be completely different for them. 🤜🤛
@EMan-cu5zo2 жыл бұрын
I agree. The grading company has a good way to make money for just saying the coin looks nice and putting it in a slab and signing them.
@Spegtacular2 жыл бұрын
The extra potential will always be worth the little space it’ll cause. It’s gold. You won’t hold thousands of ounces of it and so the space isn’t or shouldn’t be an issue. Do yourself a favor and get as much value out of the bullion and gold you have… just because it’s bullion doesn’t mean it’s only going to sell for spot. Gold is gold and silver is silver is a “yesterday” way of thinking. Good luck 👍

I'm tempted to break out my older holder PCI graded Seated Dollar because I think it could grade higher. Plus PCI isn't one of the big two and I think if it were in a PCGS or NGC holder then it would be valued higher. This is another point you might have forgotten to make beside just feeling the coin itself or for the purposes of putting them into a raw collection book.
@silverstuff59762 жыл бұрын
i did break out some PCGS slabs because i thought they under graded them, and i was right because when i got my coins back from 2 different graders, they came back 2-3 grades higher than on a pcgs slab. I ain't no professional coin grader but i could tell pcgs under graded my coins really bad it was very obvious even from a guy without grading experience.

I picked up an ICG ms70 1/10th 2005 gold eagle a couple months ago for $200 at my LCS when spot was about $1900. It was the same price as raw ones so I figured, why not? Upon close inspection there is 2 hairs on the coin. 1 on the obverse looks like a tiny dark eye lash and the 2nd on the reverse looks like transparent peach fuzz type hair. I've almost broken it out several times but haven't...yet.

Even some of my "anti-grading" friends have kind of come around on this... It does add value. I personally think there was a two-fold reasoning going on, and, the market demanded independent coin grading..... Now I know you have relationships with coin dealers, so you can't be shooting off your mouth about this kind of thing.... and to be honest, I have dealt with The Coin Guy, over the phone, and he was MORE THAN FAIR.... As far as I am concerned, I will do business with him anytime over the phone... Every time he sends me something, it's better than he represented it. So when I say this, I am not talking about him, or the other dealers you have relationships with.... But sadly, those guys are the exception, not the rule. Years ago, a local guy in the town I used to live in, sells me a gold eagle, insisting it is MS70 perfect, and that's why he "needs" to get his very very heavy premium on it... I didn't know any better, this was early in my coin journey... We all learn somehow. If you think learning is expensive, try ignorance... Joking. Don't try ignorance. Of course a year later, a friend says "take it back in to sell it, see what he says". Of course then he is telling me it's MS67 "at best", and he can only pay X, well under spot at the time... So this guy basically, at a time when spot was $400, was selling for $490, and buying for $310.... Not bad. Almost 25% each way. Heh heh! When I say "not bad", I mean, not bad for his wallet. For the customers? Not so good. But hey, f&^% the customer. So that's #1, I think "casual" or "semi-serious" coin collectors were getting REAL TIRED of always getting pushback about the condition of the coins..... So I think people like you & me, were really wanting some kind of 3rd party grading, to enter the marketplace, and end these arguments.... At least I was. So you have a coin there that says MS70. Well that kind of ends the discussion, doesn't it.... And as you correctly point out, it might not be ME selling these... At the inevitable Estate Selloff, my sister will be selling these, and I am sure she will get better value for coins in slabs.... She could do the whole thing online and get fair value... Send them digital pictures of what you have, they'll make you an offer.... #2, I think, the rise of EBay, and online sales... If a seller is selling a coin claiming it to be MS70, nobody believes that... If you're selling a PCGS MS70 First Strike, serialized, hey, it is what it is.... It is a known item. You can feel better, as a buyer, that you know what you are buying.... So I think that also, drove the popularity of 3rd party grading companies... I personally think it's dealers, who drive a lot of the chatter against them... Some dealer sends a "perfect" coin "because he says it's perfect" and it comes back 69, and now it's the "PCBS" anytime he refers to them.... But I do agree with you, I think it is here to stay.... Grading also establishes some provenance in some cases... Probably you have seen, coins from a certain pirate ship that were recovered, and it's graded by the PCGS, and it says right on there, pirate treasure from this ship, or whatever... So, it's not some dude saying that, it's the PCGS saying that, and presumably they have done "some" due diligence, to establish that yes, these coins came from this ship.... Or World Trade Center coins... Or what have you. I personally, I think grading is a good thing. Not that it's perfect, but... I am more comfortable, buying a slabbed graded coin. I also agree with you, I would like to see them up their game in terms of, airtight slabs, nitrogen filled for perfect storage... which wouldn't be that hard, quite honestly.... for what they are charging, I think they could do that.... You comments about the billionairre, whose stacks of slabbed coins... Heh heh heh!!! Cracked me up! Yeah, uhhh, if you can afford THAT MANY slabbed coins, you can afford another safe, right?? More shelf space in your safe room?? Something... I doubt we're going to hear about the guy who passed away when the stacks of slabbed coins in his garage fell down and crushed him to death.... I doubt it.... He was moving around the pallets of slabbed coins in his warehouse with a forklift, and his forklift became unstable, flipped over and crushed him.... Heh heh heh! Anyways, great job on this one.

I keep coins that have already been slabbed in those slabs simply because it is verification that the coin is real. I wouldn't pay to slab them because it adds to the cost. I have a Metalytics analyzer for non slabbed coins. Some coins are counterfeited so often that verification by slabbing adds significant value. Like 1914D and 1909SVDB cents have significant numbers of counterfeits and some of those are really hard to detect.

In the present economy Never! If SHTF, then only if you must. As a 45 year collector I don't like the idea of slabbing modern coins but if I buy one and it's that way I leave it. Why? Personally I don't care about slabbed modern bullion (unless it's something special, but that's different). However, if someone gave me a choice between a slabbed coin and an unslabbed coin for the same price, I'd buy the slabbed coin every time. Thanks!

Probably the only reason to let the coin get air, is if you think the company that graded the coin mis-graded it, and you want to submit it to another company.
@dreesecoinshobbies18362 жыл бұрын
The main question for me is why am I collecting bullion. Is it pretty or is it value? To go to far one way, if the SHTF - are you going to try and take the slab to try and get extra ammo from the dude in the bushes? Will he give you an extra box because "its perfect"? In the other direction - will your kids care that it is "perfect" when they run to sell it once you are gone? LOL Ok - I have an issue grading bullion as you can see, but I understand the appeal. Numismatics - hate the grading too but I feel the grade is far more important on a 1878 Morgan MS70 than a 2022 Gold Eagle.

Break it out. Then clean it with steel wool and sandpaper. 😂🐥 They have your CC #,,,? On a serious note, one of the PCGS sites used to run timed training videos for prospective employees where they were given about ten coins to grade. I kept a pen and paper next to me and would do my own grading. It's very similar to diamond grading and colored gemstone identification with tools of the trade where we are timed and is very difficult & you must be 100% correct. With the coin grading I got better and better over time. Although subjective it's usually pretty close. Even with a cell phone I can blow up a high res photo and see a hand retooling on a pre-1800s tip of the cleft of the letter R in the word LIBERTY which tells me which die state was used and affects value to specialists in that niche. PCGS & NGC are the only ones my family uses for generations. I am the baby and more of a Gemologist but the two seem to go together. An exception is ICG which upgrades Morgans for colored toning. This often resulted from a cardboard or plastic chemical used in very early coin collecting albums. I had a beautiful rainbow toned ICG one once. Also note that with graded coins by these companies the value almost doubles on old coins like Morgs between MS-64 & MS-65. The Red Book is the retail price & the blue book is the dealers buy price. It's exactly half. Grey sheet is more current.🙋🐥

Ive been wrestling with this myself. I have a common $10 indian 63. The older is older where the foam blocks you from seeing the stars on the edge... Im tempted to crack it out. Im tempted to send to reslab but the extra $ and wait time is unattractive.. Ugh

I purchased a ms 70 libertad 2021 and when I got it in hand noticed a scratch on the reverse so I am wondering if it is wrong to re sell?

It’s not wrong just don’t mis represent it. Post the real pic and it’s graded MS 70 by company so and so.

I’ll never buy a slabbed coin for a premium.

You know what all extremely rare and desired coins have in common besides being a coin? … they’re covered in protective plastic from a professional grading company.
@coinhistory6382 жыл бұрын
Yes that’s sadly true but you can still have a a great unslabbed collection. Love your videos by the way.

Of course. I have far more unslabbed coins than slabbed

I would only buy the slabbed coin if it was the same price. Then I would sell it and buy a raw one. The slab is absolutely worthless to me.

As someone who isn't a collector any more, when the time comes that I would use anything like that....the "dollar bill" won't be relevant, the world as we know it won't be the same, and survival will be what people are concerned about...plus bad folks are counterfeiting slabs now....soooo, if offered both at the same price, I'd probably be human and buy the slab. Humans will be human!

I busted open a $10 gold liberty when i first stated buying… I dont trust those things. I wanna hold it. I trust the company, but not that the slab is a real one, they seem to be very easily faked relative to faking federal reserve notes. I sometimes wish I didn’t, but I always come back to that I would have eventually done it anyway. Its bulky too.

I like that slab the least. Slabs take up a lot of room. Slabs do prevent someone from lowballing you when selling. Any bullion graded less than MS70 isn’t worth a premium. If you send one in and it comes back less than perfect, crack it out if you want.

I get it about keeping coins in the slab, BUT when crap hits the fan and it needs to be sold, alot of shops will only give you melt for the coin in the holder. People say, Support your local coin shop, but that same shop is looking to rip you off. To them, regardless if collectable, they will tell you, Gold is Gold and its not worth more in the holder in these times. I know, because I went to several local coin shops and they all were giving me melt on a 1921 50 Pesos NGC 68. Im not stupid, but took it out to see what the so called professionals would say and I was right. Melt is what they were offering. You're not going to get better then that is what I was told. I laughed in their face. I would never trust my local coin shops.

Well since a SHTF scenario has not yet happened and nobody knows when.. keep it in the slab until a time comes for SHTF. If that time arrives, you’ll have a hammer ready I’m sure ;)

I don't see why you'd crack an MS 70 coin. It has more value in the slab. If you want a piece to play with just buy another.
