of all the life coaches, you interviewed sylvia who probably need life coaching herself. there is no legit life coach that can tell you that you can always expect to walk out from just a single session with all your problem solved. watch at around 5mins 20s mark.

Ikr, I don't think she's qualified to be a life coach. For example, if let's say I go through a very tough phase like break up or worse, a proper life coach just can't solve all my problems within one session which is nonsensical. Healing is a long process and something that requires multiple sessions. She mentions in the video, she took 8 months to be certified as a life coach but based on all my experiences seeing counsellors and life coaches, they all have years of experience and also they have relevant qualifications.

I would like to give credit to Sylvia for being so mentally strong but watching this over my breakfast I've had the opportunity to ponder about what this moment meant for her. She is definitely using this moment as a form of advertisement as well. "client who had just given birth to a child", "low self esteem issue", "single session" she's trying to promote herself as a life coach to a broad market audience who can offer a quick and effective aid to their life. No hate, just observation.

I think Sylvia is lying, 5:11 she mention that it only takes 1 session as a life coach to solve all of the clients problems. But in her previous podcast, she said she have gone through multiple life coaches before finding the right one. So when is she telling the truth?
@bensumw

agreed. I mean its possible but very rare. The host ask 'everytime' and she said yes. Immediate red flag. Also her facial expression tells me a lot that she is trying very hard to impress. Not only that, it means those who go and seek her help are in a vulnerable position, not ideal given her previous history.

Life coaching is a profession. But I hate that a bad name like Sylvia entered this industry and make professional coaches look bad.

I’m going to put side who Sylvia is and the reputation that precedes her. I’m just going to focus on what she did during the coaching session that showed her unprofessionalism. Maintaining a neutrality is one of the most basic requirements of a coach. So it disturbs me greatly that she let her own judgement get in the way of the coaching. She said of the mother, ”This is really, really so wrong, she should be very sorry!”. When the coachee tried to defend her mother by saying, “Maybe she really didn’t want me to be bullied?” The coach retorted, “So she bully you instead?” Careful girl! Your judgement is so strong! Have you met the mother? Have you verified the facts? Whatever you knew came from the coachee, to make judgement and proclaim it like a fact is foolish and dangerous! You literally planted ideas in her head that could permanently sour her relationship with her mum! A good coach does not drive a deeper wedge into a parent-child relationship. A good coach would say, “I’m glad you are trying to put yourself in her shoes and understand what drove her to say what she said. Yes, it is possible that she thought she was protecting you by getting you to lose weight without realising her words badly affected your self-esteem. So now that you are older and wiser, do you feel that you need to be slim in order to be deserving of love and acceptance? What do you believe?” Coaching is not therapy. If Sylvia cannot tell the difference between coaching and therapy, the training company should take her off the market and not let her do harm to clients who can’t tell the difference. And yes, I do think she needs more therapy herself so she will not be superimposing her personal angst on her clients. Otherwise she won’t be crying like she was the victim too.

As someone who used to work with individuals with trauma, I was taught to be very careful about potentially re-traumatising a victim and only ask necessary questions to enable me to do my job. Anything more serious will be handled by a qualified psychologist/ psychiatrist. Wondering if what the life coach is doing (immediately deep diving into serious issues) is potentially dangerous? Some people might break and spiral instead no? Hope CNA can look into this and do a follow up if necessary for the sake of younger viewers

i agree totally. My own trauma healing is still ongoing after 1 year because it’s a mesh of interconnected mess. and it wouldn’t resolve bits by bits if not for my supportive and skilled therapist. if not handled properly, u will be disempowered without the necessary framing and skills to manage those deep emotions. i even took a neuro-linguistic programming practitioner course to equip myself with the skills and few mins into the video i find her emotionally charged and passing alot of her personal judgments onto the client. My therapist and workshop coach supported my emotions but doesn’t partake their emotions or perceptions onto my experience. coaches are meant to facilitate your own discovery to your questions but when it involves deeper mental emotional issues, please find the right people - therapists to help you heal those deeper issues.

No decent life coach will tell you that they can solve your problem in a session. It’s a disappointing episode because it felt like whoever planned this didn’t do enough research to properly represent the topic. Could have gotten Rach from Love Bonito to share her experience with her coach (Joyce Chen) or get other more recognised coaches to be featured…but it has to be Sylvia (nothing against her, but I believe there are many others who can better rep the life coaching industry) I’m not a life coach myself but know of enough people who are in the industry, and I feel like this episode has belittled their good works.

Spot on! CNA could've spotlight a more qualified life coach. Also, there are so many aspects to one's life & healing journey. A coach at best triggers the change, the coachee still needs to put in the 'work' in his/her own healing & life journey.

As a certified coach with the International Coach Federation, with more than 500 hours of coaching experience and an MSc in Applied Positive Psychology and Coaching Psychology, I’m sorry to say that this entire video is a severe misrepresentation of what coaching is. 1. What Sylvia Chan is doing is not coaching. Coaches don’t operate that way. Please, at the very least, consult people from the ICF to provide a more accurate representation. 2. There are many ICF-accredited coach training programs out there. How can the producer base their judgment on a 6-hour Udemy coaching course to determine whether someone should become a coach? It’s disappointing to see CNA producing such a video and using social media IG ads to attract people into watching it.

That's the great gulf of difference between a professional counsellor and 'a life coach '. We've all been through stuff, doesn't mean that we can tell other people what to do. She did an 8 month course 😱 I spent 5YEARS training to be a counsellor!! And a lot of the early work is exactly about 'your stuff'. Bringing your own baggage to the work is lethal. There are never ever any shortcuts! Life coaching is for the 21st century 1st world problems sort of people..if you have a serious issue please... get serious help from a professional.

I have never had a life coaching session, but based on my sessions with my therapist, therapists are professional and objective. I have just completed my Diploma in Professional Coaching and someone mentioned this episode to me. I find that the episode is shallow and also has factually incorrect information, when it is stated that you get certiication included in your training. Certification by ICF requires 100 hours of coaching with 75 having to be paid and 25 can be pro bono. It also requires that you pass an extensive examn, have a certified coach approve your coaching ability through uploaded recording session and more. It is not as easy as it is portraied here to obtain ICF certification. You can call yourself a coach and I can coach right now, but I cannot call myself certified coach as I am not yet certified. This episide seems to have been done too quickly and I would agree that someone should have found a more reputable life coach o paint a more nuanced picture of the coaching profession. Coaching is to support with changing behaviors, moving through transitions or achieving goals. It is not to deal with trauma.

22:06 I do agree with Charmaine's conclusion. Everyone should try to find the answer within themselves first. Life coaches are not simply the answer to all your solution, after you are the one holding the power to make a change in your life, not the life coach. However, I do believe that life coach is just somebody who assist you in your life when you just need some guidance, or that one step you might have overlooked when you are in the middle of working on yourself. It just depends on which stage of life you are in, if not life coaches is not really necessary, just a boost to your life

Sadly, this does not feel like journalism. It is slanted against life coaching. The show lacked depth, and did not give clear explanations of the difference between life coaching and therapy. It doesn't cover the other aspects of life coaching such as executive coaching, career coaching, performance coaching, as well as on the other spectrum, the other helping areas of psychiatry, counselling and many modalities of the mental health industry. The numbers quoted for pricing has no proper reference other than Google. Very disappointing episode on national TV. This is no different from watching social media to try to understand something and jumping to conclusions. Simply terrible.

If unfortunately they exploit you like the one in the end of the video, you can't log a police case for scam either. So might as well talk to your friend / family.

Why are people saying that this is the worst episode? The sylvia portion is definitely off-putting, and TP team should have went for someone else w/o controversy. Bringing sylvia in just puts the attention on her instead. Objectively speaking, the episode touched on life coaching, spoke to a certified psychologist, a certified PCC and even an alleged victim scammed from life coaching programmes - i think the episode covers enough for awareness, and viewers after watching this is able to really think "Should I Hire a Life Coach? (Or a psychologist/therapist instead)". And if the viewer really decide to go for Life Coaching, they would know that it's probably better to go for a CERTIFIED PCC instead. Has this TP episode not done its work? I think it has. Also kudos to Charmaine for being vulnerable in front of the camera and to the public. It's not easy. Thank you for doing that, i do hope you manage to get through your issues soon. 💪

Psychiatrists study the biology. They deal with medication. Psychologists study human behaviour, thoughts and comms. They will ask you questions that guides you to come up with your own answers. Life coaches give you the solution to your life problem according to their POV. Someone you talk to when you stuck in moving forward, to pick their brains and experiences, for reference. So the overlapping isn't with psychiatrists. The overlap and confusion for most people is with psychologists, life coaches and counsellors.

If you decide to seek guidance in your life, health, career or relationships, make sure to learn more about the coach's P-E-P. Is there a step-by-step PROCESS that you'll go through to get results? Or is it a wing-it sorta style? Next, does the coach/mentor have EXPERIENCE in the area where you're seeking support? You decide if you care more about the years of experience or the experience of getting success in the field. And, finally, whether you feel like you can connect with the coach's PERSONALITY because you'll need to feel comfortable to open up and share your goals and challenges. If the coach has free resources, please consume as much as you can before making your decision! I've transitioned from 10+ years in the corporate world into a career coach today, and above is the same advice I give to anyone interested in working with me or signup for my career programs. Should only work with people you can truly help IMHO. Good luck and take care!

As a viewer I am feeling like that the reporter is representing a certain level of skepticism and cynicism on the industry of life coach, even the music is given the vibes. While it surfaces the skepticism and calls out the shady things that happen in the industry, it is also not representative of the full spectrum, including those who genuinely wants to help others through coaching. Viewers watch with care and not be skewed by the producers' POV as well. If you are in need of help and speaking to a few prospective coaches, lean on your own judgment of who is in front of you and determine if they are suitable *for* you and match your values. Also recommended to maintain some level of awareness if you are feeling manipulated or if something starts to feel off in the process.

Agree, the crew/producer behind this episode has already formed a biased view against life coaches. Mainly focusing on negative aspects/experiences and interviewing a controversial person who is still fairly new as a life coach. Been watching Sylvia's story unfolding and am proud of how vulnerable she has become and her growth as a human being. However watching this video and seeing how she work as a coach, there are honestly quite a few questionable points. Coaches with a clear 3rd person perspective can identify a person's issue quite easily, but to manage their emotions, process and to release as well as bringing them back into a safe space requires real technique that psychologist are trained to do. So coaches reading this, please also practice with clear ethics. When you see someone distressed and needing more professional intervention, please point them to a therapist. Unpacked baggage that is not repacked back properly can cause more harm than good. 🙏🏻

Reading the comments, I can understand & also ask - why Sylvia? So kelong. But good coaches don't tell ppl what to do. They actually ask good qns that makes ppl think for themselves. A lot of times, the answer is within the individual. Coaches draw it out. They don't do shadow work or go deep cos that's not supposed to be their area; that's what mental health professionals do. Life coaches also don't cry with their clients. That's not professional. Sylvia at this point is probably not ready but who's to say she can't legit do well? None of us starts out an expert. She needs to build credibility through experience & as the other commenters mentioned, she still needs to heal. I only hope she would be serious about it & don't go down her previous path & ruin it for herself & for other legit, good life coaches out there.

Remove yourself from people who never reciprocates respect, friendship and love. Do not stay unless you can handle being civil, self-awareness and practicing no expectations from people. Or so just blend in discreetly and keep your inner belief stronger. Retain those people who shows genuine humanity. Work on your Inner You and Self-love. When you have whole and balanced inner self, then your joys, love and strength will shine no matter what. Self-love is never being selfish. No matter what happens, self-love will be one of your savior. How? Do not put all your trust, respect and heart in one basket. Keep some for yourself. 7:25. The counselling session: all was good until Sylvia said “she (Charmaine’s mother) should be very sorry..… so she bullied you instead..… “ . I think blaming and character-assassinating Charmaine’s mom is doing more damage than helping, because damaging her relationships with her parents will cause more turmoils for the family. Most adults can gradually reduce the impact of childhood traumatic experiences, if they will step back and start to look at themselves from outside, rather than from the inside, playing the role of the vulnerable child again and again, and being trapped in the prison.🦋🙁

0:53 Charmaine’s 2 pals’ sharing are very poignant: that they hv learnt to understand themselves better, able to pinpoint where are their emotional blockages and how to set themselves free from getting stuck. To discover that it wasn’t work itself that was stressing her out, but rather, her PERCEPTIONS of the various situations. They nailed it, by identifying the root causes of issues instead of trying to deal with the superficial symptoms of stress.

I couldn't bear to complete the episode because it's definitely not going to be insightful. Unlike other Talking Point episodes where 'legitimate' stakeholders or 'professionals in their fields' were interviewed to share their perspectives, this one seems kind of absurd - not gonna flame anyone in this video though. But if you are going through a difficult time, please reach out to a counselor, social worker, etc. They are definitely more trained to support you in the betterment of yourself.

The problem is people are complicated, it's tough to do but easy to say; just be content with yourself first, accept people opinion but filter and consider which one is good for you. Even if other assist or showing you some way on how to deal with things, doesn't mean it will be fit for you. do what makes you happy yet do not bother or disturb others life. so what if you are fat?, are you gonna slim down because others opinion?. do their opinion matter to you?, will they even help you when you are down?. Think these through and get proper rest when you are tired. life is short, stop chasing approval from others when at the end, they don't really matter. bad things happen so you can appreciate the good and life is definitely a roller coaster.

Empathy is a great tool and skill to use. For most people with dysfunctional backgrounds, at first they just really want to be heard, no solution needed. But they dont know that... yet. I will stop here for now.

so... she basically "bounced back" by finding another "career" that she could "manipulate" and "gaslight" but this time round the recipent has to pay huge sums for it ? that's great! look ma, we solved unemployment in SG. man anyone paying for her life coach seriously needs to reflect on life.. donating that money might make more sense

This 'life coach' comes in all types of forms. There's even some where they encourage people that have joined them to bring in more people and in return they would get some sort of "compensation" / "discounts", like what Harry went through but his is pretty extreme that he has to meet with a KPI??! . All these 'coaches' like to prey on people's emotions.

My sentiment is that the video is leaning towards the opinion of being not-for-life coaches so I doubt it is a sponsorship of any kind but more so a news piece because given Singapore's population, the number of ICF-certified coaches we have is indeed a lot. My opinion is that the rise of life coaches might be due to the decline in religiosity & community, the rise of mental issues along with the stigma of seeking a therapists/psychologist. Life coaches fill this gap. Whether they're genuinely helpful or not, I'm not sure.

Let's not place so much emphasis on the title (i.e., life coach, psychologist, cousnellor). Rather, focus on the embodiment. It does not matter what certification, years of experiences, etc, if the person does not walk the talk.

Take it with a big pinch of salt Life coaches are self proclaimed experts A person who has experienced life's journey of ups and downs with many curved balls are not even qualified enough to tell another how to live their lives nor resolve their life's issues!! Every person is uniquely different

This is so disappointing, CNA. Considering the gravity of the topics that are going to be addressed, you chose to showcase an inaccurate coaching style and potentially make people who may need help 1) think this is how they can seek help or 2) avoid seeking help because they don't want to go through this. The education needed on dealing with trauma is a bigger thing than getting numbers through sensationalism.

Life Coaches (majority of them) are just motivational or simply asking you "what's wrong" coaches, the worst are the "guru" sales coaches. Think before you spend your savings on life coaching where the barrier of entry is pretty low plus there's easy access to alternate sources of motivation and answers. The secret behind how they work is simple, it isn't complex expertise etc. but really the effects of sunken cost fallacy due to paying money up front. When you have the pinch of spending money to focus on really finding out (introspectively) what's wrong with you, you tend to take yourself more seriously. Also 500 hours of coaching (certificate) is pretty terrible compared to professional service providers who have an expertise. 500 hours of career expertise = 500 / 8 hours a day = 62.5 days of execution. Now compare that to a full time doctor or a lawyer or a medical psychiatrist etc. in terms of hours. Heck compare it to full time students who want to pursue those mentioned professions in terms hours.

Seriously there is no short cut to life, I think is good to talk about it, maybe paying a life coach is a way to do so, but it should be someone with wisdom not someone w no integrity and looking for the next opportunity to bounce back. $400 is BS. Just read about Buddhism and about letting go.
