I have had a lot of experience with personal injuries and find that it's alternating between the two that helps bring healing for injury while the area is still immobilized. Once that period is over, you can begin to bring some movement into the area, and then the rest/active balance starts to play a role. At this period you want to heat the sensitive area as part of a warm-up to prevent strain and afterwards, you want to ice it to reduce swelling and bring relaxation.

Thanks- clear tips. I fall into that grey area. My shoulder is sore, I believe from doing wide grip pull ups. Certain movements don't feel good and it's getting annoying- it's been a full month. At this point, should I use ICE or HEAT? It's well beyond 72 hours. I just bought a shoulder sling with a heated gel insert that can heat up to 120F for 20 minutes. Lately I have been taking hot showers then, after it's warm, I am doing gentle stretches- good idea? Pain is only 3 out of 10 and only in certain movements. I can do all range of motion stretches but some feel uncomfortable- feels like a bad strain or sprain. I have not seen a doctor yet or gotten an MRI. It hasn't bothered me that much- but I want to treat it right and not make it worse.

Hi doctor What type of massage is good for Bell’s palsy ?Thank you
@dr.kevinbrown92513 жыл бұрын
Bell’s palsy is due to an irritation of the cranial nerve 7. There is no specific massage for that. I don’t think It would hurt to massage the muscles around the face and around the eye. I’m not sure what treatment you’ve had for it yet. I’ve had it in the past and the first thing the doctor did was put me on prednisone to reduce swelling around the nerve root.

How would heat make it worse ?
@BRicker2 Жыл бұрын
I'm dealing with my piriformis being sore even though I got it working again via chiro adjustment,, and it seems ice works better. Heat - even moist heat seems to make it hurt more, so I'm thinking the heat is irritating some nerves?
@dr.kevinbrown9251 Жыл бұрын
Probably so. I always like to use ice especially if it’s a nerve issue or a muscle that can possibly aggravate the sciatic nerve

Great video but...I was right with you until the end. My mom is 90 years old and she broke her foot about 5 years ago. When the cold weather comes her foot starts to hurt again and she has pain. She puts ice on it. I was following what you were saying and I was about to tell her to use heat instead when the last thing said was heat could be bad. It's and old injury so heat or cold? What should she do?
@johndoe-ep7qk2 жыл бұрын
actually, this wasn't clear as regards CHRONIC tennis elbow. you said for acute injuries, swelling, etc, use ice. they you went on to say ice is good for things like tendonitis, but isn't tennis elbow a form of tendonitis? so what about chronic tennis elbow? ice or heat?

@@dr.kevinbrown9251 i had a lot of pain a month ago after the injury first happened but now it's just this weird mild spreading pain and a lot of stiffness.
