On the topic of team preview, its important to remember that -Team preview allows players to make more informed decisions that overall increase the level of decision making in competition and -Being able to guess team composition and play off of smaller amonunts of information is a valid skill, and earlier generations aren't bad for relying on it. Are NOT mutually exclusive statements, and the fact that we have both team preview and no team preview generations means we don't need to have one in favor of the other, you can just get what you prefer

Personally I would like to play games, even just as some OM or private room, where you can decide to play gen 1, 2, 3 or 4 with team preview and gen 5, 6, 7 and 8 without, just to see how much it changes the game and what the metagame would look like I get that it's not big enough of a niche to be a separate consistent ladder but again, being a fun gimmick that is featured once in a while might be fun and if you want to play outside of that, play in private rooms, I don't think I'd be the only one to appreciate that (gen 6 without team preview sounds genuinely fun, and gen 3 with team preview would probably be very interesting as well)

Honestly, I think that an Iron Head ban is perfectly warranted in this case - or maybe this is finally a case where a complex ban (Jirachi + Iron Head) is finally what is best for the metagame. Complex bans in older, well-tested generations already has a bit of precedent (sleep + trapping in gen 2, for instance).

Personally, I like that we can catch more than one freeze, but I am in favour of whatever makes the majority of players happy. While I don't know which direction the majority leans, I think it's probably in favour of a freeze clause.

People in general say: Better to just ban Jirachi if freeze is such a problem. I don't play dpp, but my friend Le Don (french dpp player, dpp OU 1 slot of the mamo team in dpppl) always said to me "if you ban jirachi, then you ban latias, and we want to keep latias in the tier bc it checks important stuff, so don't ban rachi" and the way I see it is that rachi's flinches are a necessarry evil. I'm gonna be very honest, i'm not that good at non-degenerate metagames (i play randoms, please help) but i don't think Jirachi should be banned. The biggest struggle i had entering DPP is dealing defensively with HO and Wish-Protect-Iron Head-Body Slam really help me not to rage quit, i think it is important to have good, easy and reliable defensive pokemon in every tier. That said, i don't discredit any top player that thinks it is overbaring. Iron Head is nasty in tournaments and i find it to particularly suffocate stall a lot. Hazards up with burn, toxic and maybe freeze all over the enemy's team can create a scenario where just 1 iron head flinch can force a milo, skarm or hippo to give all momentum up to recover and be in a really bad spot. I'm actual garbage at dpp, so maybe i just wrote actual shit, but i'm posting it anyways

I'm right there with you, Jirachi was the glue that held many of my teams together when I was playing the tier, it's just such a reliable fallback plan. Its defensive utility is far too valuable to get rid of it entirely imo, especially in such a dragon-centric tier.

Question about smogon: the way sleep clause works couldn't actually be done in game, since you can still use sleep moves to waste PP they just won't work. There is no equivalent to what is currently implemented on showdown. So what exactly _is_ their policy regarding changing mechanics?

This is a super interesting question that is consistently argued, if smogon is so dedicated to accuracy of ingame play why change these mechanics? Someone in another video put it very nicely, in that any competitive game, in order for it to be relevant it needs to go through some quality of life changes that keep it playable (ie freeze clause in rby). In my eyes this doesn’t seem too contradictory as smogon still aims to provide the same experience as a 1v1 battle in game, yet tweak (RARELY fix) some overlooked broken mechanics that gf doesn’t seem to care about whether thats because the metagame has passed or because 1v1 is not a competitive format in their eyes.

Sleep clause is relatively easy to implement in tournaments. Pokemon day of many years ago: if you intentionally put to sleep a second one (not counting resting pokemons ofc) you loose the game. The freeze clause however seems impossible to do.

If you want to waste PP on an already sleeping pokemon can you just pray that they don't switch out and use it again anyways? Using your logic those would all be acceptable and you could sleep multiple mons, but in the simulator the move/ability would just fail. That's a pretty huge difference mechanically.

Jirachi really is the only mon who is very problematic about it. Because it's not just about whether it will do well in Ubers. While Jirachi can be an extremely annoying opponent, it also helps to glue the tier together in a ton of ways. Banning it would compromise the defensive integrity of the tier, and probably either be reversed shortly after or lead to another ban or two. While something like Bronzong could rise to fill the void, Zong has nowhere near the versatility of Jirachi and would be much more exploitable.

At least with mons that are basically unplayable for ubers I can understand why people demand complex bans, regardless if I agree with the ban or not. That's the reason I mentioned how good Jirachi is in ubers. I'm fully aware of bans being about either strain on team building or how uncompetitive a mon is. Which let's be real, Jirachi should qualify on the latter for being basically a 6× more effective king's rock incarnate WITH great typing of 9 resistances AND no quad weakness AND fast AND access to TWave with a 100 percent accurate non-immunity flinch move. Now of course none of those qualities are problematic on their own right individually. I would never complain about Metagross nor Togekiss. But banning iron head from other mons who may need it just to protect this one mon while not having that same complex bans for other mons is hypocritical. You wouldn't ban dragon dance to protect Salamence nor outrage to protect Garchomp.

Banning Serene Grace bans Jirachi while unfairly banning Togekiss. While it can be argued that Flying is a better attacking type than Steel, Togekiss is harder to use since it's weaker to passive damage (Rocks, Sand). Usually, you ban an ability if it is problematic on a wide variety of the mons that get it (trapping abilities, weather abilities in BW). Serene Grace is limited in distribution and not as big of an issue on all the mons that get the ability (see Dunsparce). While a lot of mons get Iron Head, not a lot of them actually use the move in their movesets. Unless I'm wrong, the only mons that frequently use Iron Head in their sets are Rachi and Mawile (not an OU mon). Therefore, an Iron Head ban would mostly only affect Jirachi (or in niche cases, Metagross). I'm not 100% sure that Rachi seems broken with Iron Head, but I don't play DPP and their council will ultimately make the most informed decision possible (or potentially a suspect test).

picking a pokemon to place in your team is virtually the same as picking a move to place in your moveset. there's no reason why we are cool with banning the former but not the latter.
