This is another one of those topics we don’t feel comfortable talking about for fear of judgement, being seen as weak, precious or incapable. How do you tell your boss that you need to take yet more time of work because of your period? How will you catch up with all the school | college | university you’ve had to miss this year? Or how do you explain that you don’t want to leave your house or bed at least once every single month? Is it normal? What causes it? How can you help yourself? I answer all this and more in this video. *Please don't feel ashamed of your body or symptoms. Instead I encourage you all to arm yourself with knowledge and learn what your body or symptoms may be telling you. Seek medical help/advice early. @Talksense periods are not a medical illness. Neither is motherhood or pregnancy. But from the point of view of an employer all of these make women less efficient in the workplace. If I, as a small business owner have a choice to hire a woman or man who will not have to be called by a school to come pick up his kids because they're sick, or have to give 3 days off every month because of their period. Or give them modified duty because they're pregnant, or maternity leave after they give birth. The choice then becomes simple. From the point of view of an employer, it looks like women are a liability in the workplace. And mandating days off for periods will just make it all the worse.

For the longest time, I thought I was the only one who vomited. I get almost every possible symptom out there and it makes it difficult as an adult to navigate through the corporate world. I’m finally going to the doctor’s and ask how to relieve nausea. I’m lucky to have a 30 day cycle, but sometimes I get my period early and I can’t prepare. Does anyone not eat or skip certain foods during their period? I found out that I get cramps from constipation and the nausea is from sugar, dairy, and greasy foods, but this is my experience.

Same, my mum thought I was exaggerating and it's kinda gross but I had to physically show her how much I was bleeding and how large my clots were to be taken seriously. She took me to several doctors and they would all say the same thing; it's normal to be irregular when periods first start and then send me home. Some prescribed extra strength Tylenol. For the longest time, I was really depressed and defeated about it. At my worst, I had to change my overnight pads every 1-2hrs and wake up 2-3 times a night to switch them. Fever, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, the whole shabang. Definitely not normal. My own research online showed that heavy periods over a prolonged time can lead to endometriosis or worse, cancer cysts. I later confirmed that I'm high risk with my OBGYN and I'm still angry none of those doctors warned me about it.

The next doctor I went to was the most down to earth, caring person, who actually listened to my concerns and didn't dismiss anything I said. Few useful things that you may be able to stock for your girls: Periods can make girls a bit anemic so eating nutrient rich food helps with iron levels. I like spinach, kale, finding a way to work dark greens into their diet. Raspberry leaf and nettle teas help since they carry nutrients that help with pain and menstrual hormones. If you can budget to get safe sanitary products, no dyes or scented products. There are also great underwear and alternatives to sanitary products now, let them try everything so they know what works best for their flow and body, everyone is different. Headaches, like really bad headaches can be unavoidable so a soft gel ice pack is very nice for the forehead or back of neck.

I feel it all: severe pain in lower ab and lower back, nausea, headaches, tiredness, sometimes i feel hot and i'm shaking (even though i don't have a fever), i can't stand anyone touching me and everything bothers me. My husband understood that pretty early in our relationship, my Mom knows it's real, but everyone else doesn't. I got to know how to predict my period starting a few hours before and i take a pill right at the beginning. If the pain starts to kick in, even if i take a pill, it will only start to subside in a few hours and if i have to be at work that's the worst nightmare. I only feel these symptoms in the first day of my period, though, from the second day on i'm a brand new person, like nothing's happening.
@redpepper59844 жыл бұрын
you're just like me. For me reducing foods that cause a synthesis of excess prostaglandins helped, for example, limiting PUFAs (poly unsaturated fatty acids) before my period. Our body still needs them but i stick to a more plant based diet (and also high in fiber) to remove excess estrogen and improve my wellbeing in overall. Also, never try primrose oil. I did and it made everything so much worse, then i read on the internet that it has omega 6 which can raise prostaglandin levels if used in excess (and its very easy to do). Sunflower seed oil works the same way

I used to have horrible period pains to a point where I would sweat through my clothes as if I have a high fever... Fainting when the pain became too much for my body to handle. I would lay on a cold tile to cool down while crying and hoping the pain would just disappear. I would throw up too and could barely walk after that...when that happened I would pray for sleep to come or for the painkillers to kick in. I literally used to have anxiety a few days before my period and it intensified when the period began... I would rush to prepare my hot water bottle for my tummy and painkiller and just hope to sleep through the day. Then I did a bit of research, because I couldn't handle it anymore... Tired of missing classes, work and important things. I learned that dairy products and caffeine where the leading cause for me because I would crave those things the most a few days before and during my period, which in turn intensified the cramps. I decided to avoid dairy products and caffeine 5 days before my period and that significantly helped lessen my cramps and exercising regularly helps too and some months I actually experience a happy period...and yes, I still get cramps but I don't cry, faint, lay on the tile, sweat prefusely or feel like I wanna die and definitely no more anxiety. Manageable periods.

I’m 30 seconds in and I already love this video. All my doctors have been so dismissive over the years. I’ve missed work and school because of period pain. My first period (I was 11 and on vacation) was so painful that I vomited for a couple hours. More than once I’ve spent a day laying on the floor in tears. Even ended up in the ER in high school once. Over the last few years (I’m now in my 30s), the pain has gotten slightly less. I also think I’m just better at predicting it and taking preemptive measures. I start taking OTC NSAIDs a couple days before my period starts and make sure to wake up early during the first 3-4 days of my period so that I can take meds and use a heating pad for an hour before I get up for the day. However, I’ve also made myself sick from taking too many pills if I lose track throughout the day and simply take them whenever I’m in pain. While my period pain has lessened, I’ve started having other pains between periods. Usually I cramp and spot sometime around ovulation and get severe rectal pain and cramping around the same time. And sex is occasionally painful in the week or so leading up to my period. My GP suggested a couple of years ago that I might have endometriosis (my mom did and ended up having to get a hysterectomy in her 30s). But I don’t currently have a gynecologist, partly because my experiences with gynecologists previously have been so bad. Idk why I’m chattering so much about this. I think it’s just years of pain and frustration spilling out in what seems like a friendly forum... Edit: oh hey, you recommend doing exactly what I now do to control period pain. I wish you were my doctor... I had to figure this out over two decades of trial and error.

Hi. Thank you for sharing your experience so honestly. It can be daunting opening up about personal problems especially on an online forum/platform so what you have shared is particularly brave of you to do so. I also think that what you have shared will help other women who are struggling with the same or similar symptoms. I 'm pleased for you that you have found a way to help you manage the pain. Endometriosis is a possibility but these days, as we understand more about the condition, it is rare to need a hysterectomy for endometriosis. There are other effective ways of managing the condition. I would encourage you to discuss your symptoms, concern and family history with your doctor to see if you can work together and explore what other options may be available to you. ❤️

@MissBttrsctch thanks for the answer, but I don’t live in the US, we have a very different healthcare system here, basically if I want to choose my doctor I can only do that in the private sector (which is fairly expensive, obviously).here removing the reproductive organs are illegal under the age of 35 (or somewhere around there) except obviously if you cancerous tumors or already have 3 children but even than it’s very complicated process..

I started birth control when I was 19 (the nuvaring because I'm terrible at scheduling things I consume/take medicine wise.) And it made everything so much better for me. I've been cramp free for 10 years. They did change it to a generic version though which is a little different, I get minor cramps, but it's like those warning cramps where my uterus is like "girl I'm here! Poke. ^.^" Instead of it trying to kill me from the inside as if a sharp monster with claws is attempting to escape and my uterus is some sort of cage trying to keep it there. I would also do the same, it's why I went to birth control. Prior, I was taking a mixture of 12-16 pills in a 4-8 hour period because screw my liver, I don't need that, I'll just take half from one of my siblings.

My mom had severe period pains when she was younger and now my sister and I do 🤦🏾♀️ I hate them so much! I actually get scared when I'm about to get my periods 🥺 when things get bad pain killers don't work and I just have to scream and cry until my body gives in and I fall asleep or pass out I'm not sure yet which one happens. I can't function for 3 days when I'm on my periods. My mom had painful periods until 51, can't believe I still have a long way to go with this!

I became vegetarian a few years ago and I drink celery juice the week before my period. That combo stopped all my pain. I also stick to a low carb diet. Last month I unfortunately started using powdered milk to cook porridge and bam! The pain is back! I'm going to juice celery now and will stick to it every other week. Never again! No more animal products.

It make sense when you said animal products made your period pain back. I'm a vegetarian too, I consume a lots of dairy products, maybe that's the reason why my period pains are unbearable. I'll try cutting animal products and drink celery juice as well :)))))

Hi Alejandra! Thank you! So pleased to see fellow medics also following on my channel. I can understand why you could be having second thoughts. Our training/career can be extremely challenging but also extremely rewarding. I know many doctors who had second thoughts during med school. Try to hold on to that thing that sparked a fire in you when you decide to apply to med school. YOU CAN DO IT. It's ok to have doubts. That's completely normal. its part of your process of evaluation. Wish you all the success and rooting for you! ❤️❤️❤️

I had an absolute horrendous primary care doctor growing up, whenever I saw her about period pain she just told me it was nothing and to deal with it. Ever since I had periods (idr age I started) I was in so much pain I'd be bed ridden for up to a week sometimes. The flow didn't help I was a pretty heavy bleeder. Then my primary care retired when I was 25 I went to a new primary care after having the worst pain I had ever experienced during a period, I can't describe it, I couldn't sit or stand I was in such pain it caused vomiting. She told me to go to a gynecologist immediately and that year I was found to have a sever case of endometriosis & 2 very large cysts. I was put on a year long treatment to suppress my hormones and skim through the start of menopause (also on meds to prevent menopause symptoms) and I felt amazing for the first time in my life.. until I had to stop treatment and the pain came back just as bad as before. This year I ended up getting a hysterectomy so that I can finally live pain free.. And even that was a horrible experience but I'm healed now and I wish I knew about all this stuff when I was younger cause dang. I feel like I coulda gotten treatment sooner in my life or at least knew better how to handle what I was going through than people telling to 'toughen up' and 'it's not that bad.'
@engagedwithmusic34203 жыл бұрын
I don't know if it is bad to feel relieved that your first doctor retired. I mean if it wasn't for her, you wouldn't have gotten a new doctor that actually hear your pain out. Anyway i feel happy for you

@@engagedwithmusic3420 Trust me, I was very relieved she retired, I didn't realize just how bad a doctor she was till I turned like 24 and she broke patient confidentiality because she thought I was pregnant, test was negative so she asked everyone in my family she could contact all because I was late one month :v

When you were talking about taking medication, and said "for the first 3 days of your period" I was confused for a second before remembering that my 2-3 day periods are not the average... but before you call me God's favourite... I will warn that really short periods aren't all fun and games. It's 1 day of extream cramping, followed by 1 day of the heaviest flow you could imagine... filling a super ultra plus tampon in 2 hours. Followed by 1-2 days of very light spotting.

What you said at the beginning is so true! Painful periods are so easily dismissed. I remember one time in high-school in PE classes, I asked the teacher if I could sit on the bleachers because my period why so painful. One girl came to me and asked why I was sitting down, and I told her it was because I was on my period. She told me with the most contemptuous tone: "well I'm on my period too! But I'm still doing the class." 😐 Okay... well we don't share a uterus so I don't know what I'm supposed to do with that piece of information. I have dysmenorhea and periods have been a constant struggle ever since I was 13. Now I take the pill so it's much easier to deal with, but I cannot tell you the amount of pain killers I was taking in order to feel "normal". Really glad you are making a video about this 💖
