Lets go back to funding public universities closer to how we used to in the 1970s, 80s, 90s, and then stop giving out as much in loans and capping tuition at reasonable rates once their majority publicly funder like it used to be probably when Woody went to school. College is cheaper and people would be able afford it more.

That would be great. But also hard to pass cause once an industry starts making boat loads of money in this country it is very hard to put the genie back in the bottle no matter how terrible the industry becomes, big pharma being the best example. I think for right now allowing student loans to be declared when filing for bankruptcy like every other loan ever is a good first step and then we start to handle the other shit.

@RealSweetKid I agree on the no federal loans part and think many schools should be stricter but you are always going to have people who drop out for one reason or another. I don’t know about banning certain degrees though because who would decide which ones are useless and which ones are not? I do think there should be a required class taken in sophomore year of high school that is dedicated to researching colleges and everything about them. We also need to stop pressuring every single kid into going to college instead of taking up a trade or going to community college.

At the end of the day it's the government picking winners and losers unfairly. I avoided debt in college and bought a house, but I know people who did the opposite and are currently renting. My loan already has a 2.0% interest rate so my debt is growing more slowly than inflation. I'd also say that if anyone deserves debt forgiveness less than college students, it's people who spent more than 10% of their yearly income on a car. You could have bought a $5,000 dollar 2010 Ford Fusion... but nooooo you had to have a 2018 Hyundai Elantra for $20k.... I feel no pity.

Most college debt is held by post graduates, people that are going to be doctors, lawyers, politicians. People like me that never went to college don't get any free money. Also in reference to the remark by hutch regarding court decisions that are unpopular. The job of the courts is to rule according to the law and constitution. If the law isn't serving people, you change the law, not the courts. The supreme court merely stated there is nothing in the constitution that protects the right to abortion, and they're right. It would be completely different if there were a federal law or constitutional amendment that codified that right. Also, Hutch brings up the misconception that homeless people have it better and are "living the high life" (a misconception that doesn't actually exist). In reality, most homeless people are drug addicts and mentally ill, not just people that are simple "poor". If you're simply poor and have an ok head on your shoulders, there are plenty of support programs to take care of anything you need. One more thing, a lot of Hutch's talking points about republicans seem to be from wild assumptions made by far-left people that have no bearing on reality.

@Daniel yeah so. The debt is still wiped and having it stay on your report for so long is the punishment for not being able to pay it back so it will keep people from abusing bankruptcy. @Daniel yeah I know you can’t currently but you should be able to, that’s the point I’m making. Filing for bankruptcy is a massive deal and follows you for ages like you said so I doubt it will be abused by people even if they have a large amount of student loan debt. Also you have to liquidate a ton of your assets in the process, it can be a real nightmare that is only worth it in extreme situations.
@clayjack9969

@Daniel no it would not be abused any more so then it already is. It’s tough cause while I definitely get the gut impulse to say “no! They took on the loan they have to pay it!” The reality is pretty much all these loans were agreed to by minors or very young adults who had a ton a pressure put on them to go to college by their parents and society as a whole, many parents will even completely cut their children off and kick them out if they don’t go to college, the decision is also made while the kids or young adults are still in high school and taking their extra curricular activities so they don’t have a ton of time to research it fully and know if it’s even want to do with their life let alone a good financial choice. Also a lot of schools are not up front and honest about the actual return on investment of their degrees or the real job outlook for them and why would they be? They are a business after all. Now couple all that with the fact that they are the only kind of loan you can’t declare when filing for bankruptcy which is how many people who are now successful got out of big trouble including Dave Ramsey and you have a pretty fucked up system and situation that we definitely need to do something about. I think allowing student loans to be declared when filing for bankruptcy should be the first step and we should go from there.

You really think a 17-18 year old who is not only going to graduate high school, but is also going to college, doesn’t understand the concept of debt and loans? Are we supposed to actually think these kids who are seeking higher education can’t comprehend how much $50,000 is? Come on man. It’s absurd. Should we forgive all mortgages because some people may not have fully understood the cost of paying off a house and had pressure to move out and own a home? Applying the student loan debt forgiveness logic to any other type of loan or debt just shows how illogical it is. Can we forgive credit card debt for everyone too, since clearly those idiots don’t understand APR? If you willingly decided to take out a loan and go into debt, that YOUR decision and your problem. I have no sympathy for people who make excuses for their own mistakes and want everyone else to bail them out.

You can't take a degree from someone if they defaulted on the debt. They have all the training that a college degree gives and are functionally equivalent to any other graduate. I also disagree with the "they are just kids who were too busy to know what they were doing when signing up for 100k in debt." Everyone is responsible for every other financial decision they make, why is school so different? Is "you didn't really think about it so it's not your fault" a valid excuse in any other part of life? If an 17-18 year old doesn't know what money and loans are but is smart enough to apply for a loan I don't know what to think. The real issue is how easy it is to get these loans while not taking into account the grades the student is getting and whether their chosen field will actually be able to pay down the debt. When getting a car loan or home loan they are supposed to look at your income. Why don't student loans look at your projected income and cut you off if you are getting a 2.0 gpa or enrolled in underwater basket weaving? If a high schooler is obligated to go to college then they can go to community college. It's essentially the same thing for only a thousand bucks a semester (or sometimes totally free with financial aid). Also I must preemptively say, DO NOT TALK SHIT ON COMMUNITY COLLEGE. Odds are the classes transfer, and the only reason not to go is you are a genius with a free ride anyway ,obsessed with status, or want to relive a generic college comedy film.

It seemed useless at the time, but many engineers still model and design cars out of clay today. Also, mingling with other people with very abstract views and ideas was eye opening into new possibilities within my own field. Yes we still had our core classes of number crunching and industry skills, but its the electives with other people of different cultures, backgrounds and views that truly make up what college is meant to be. Sadly if you feel like you didn't learn anything at all, then you either didn't pick a hard enough degree to challenge your mind.
