I grew up with the Beatles from the night I saw them on Ed Sullivan in 1964. I was 7 years old and to say they have had a huge impact on my life is an understatement. Up until John's death I wished upon wish that they would reunite. But in the ensuing decades I only feel absolute joy that they ended when they did. I wish the circumstances had been less stressful for them but it was almost like it was meant to be that it end that way because it virtually guaranteed that they wouldn't play together again and we can all now just listen to Abbey Road and say good lord, did these guys go out with one of their best efforts or what?

I too grew up with them. I did see them on " _The Ed Sullivan Show_ " but My sister bought " _Meet The Beatles_ " so I knew what was in store on the Sullivan shew! To me, The Beatles can do no wrong, cannot write a bad song or have a bad recording! When I was 18, all I would listen to was Beatles, or Solo Beatles! My friends got to live with that! I always thought of what If.. What kind of album would they put out after " _Abbey Road_ " had they stayed together for one more! They went out on top! And even though I was devastated, I learned to live with it. Hey, There's solo works will be coming out. Now, instead of (1) album we get (4) Yeh! But losing John was shocking!! Never in a million years could I dream that he would be assassinated! And then losing George. Even though he was sick and we knew we were going to lose him, it was still a shock when he did.. But I have strong Faith. We will all see John & George again up in Paradise...along with our family & friends!!! ✝ 🚶🏽‍♂️🚶🏽‍♂️🚶🏽‍♂️🚶🏽‍♂️✝⛪ *A M E N*

Answer: no. They were 4 guys that needed time apart. If they aren't comfortable doing a gig together, then that's that. Btw I fully sympathize with Lennon in the Playboy interview. For George and John particularly, the Beatles experience really shook their interest in being performers. They owed no one anything

Hi, John. I love the Doggett book but there's no way the Beatles ever had any obligation to reform for Bangla Desh or any other charitable event. If they were morally obliged to do it, they would have been playing concerts for the rest of their lives for some cause or another. The sad fact is there will always be suffering in this world and while a rock concert may help raise money to ease a particular situation (at least in the short term) no concert can solve the world's ills. Great video, I always appreciate your thoughts.

I think it's a good thing that they never reunited. Very few reunions of classic bands have been enjoyable. One of the few exceptions I can think of is when Pink Floyd reunited for Live 8, which was amazing. I think if John had lived longer The Beatles might have reunited in the studio, sooner or later, like in the case of the long awaited new ABBA songs.

Given the situation in 1971, I can't see them all getting on the same stage together. I always imagined them getting together in the studio, if anything, as a live show would have had absurdly high expectations.

As you pointed out, their relationships at that time were at their lowest points, so it never was going to happen. My personal, "What if. . . .Alternate Beatles history", is what if Brian Epstein didn't die when he did. I am of the opinion that if he was still around, he would have the respect of the four of them and would have managed to smooth out whatever disagreements would have arose. For me, the "Break Up" was devastating and it took me a while to get over it, but, now with the passage of time, it all worked out. It brought about "All Things Must Pass", which in my opinion (and that of many others) is an ABSOLUTE Masterwork and the finest post-Break Up album. That, in turn, brought about Derek and The Dominos, which for me, their "Layla. . . ." album is the Greatest Album of All-Time. John's first two albums are brilliant and "Double Fantasy" is beautiful. Then there's Paul's "Band On the Run" & "Venus & Mars" and of his newer stuff, I like "New" and then there's Ringo and I LOVE "Ringo". Later on, when tensions eased and the remaining three worked on the "Anthology" project, had John been still around (Damn you, Mark David Chapman!) I could see them doing something, kinda a laid-back Traveling Wilburys thing, "OK, we took our break, we used to be pretty good at this, let's just have some fun and lay down some tracks. . . " So, in the end (sic), I say, Let It Be. . . .

Interesting piece in the Apple TV doc 1971 which covers the concert for Bangladesh in the first episode. . Ringo states that George didn’t invite him to play because George didn’t want it to be any sort of Beatle show. Ringo decided to show up anyway. The rest is history. Great Documentary to watch if you haven’t.

Paul visited John in New York when SNL offered a slot on their show for The Beatles. They thought about turning up. So I would have loved for all of The Beatles to have been in New York at that time and do the show. It might have changed John's feelings towards The Beatles and reignited his love for the band.

Tempers were still riding high in '71 so I don't see it happening. My feeling is that they would have taken a couple of years off from each other, maybe reunited in '73 when they all had albums released in addition to the Red and Blue Beatles albums. It would have to have been a double album to give them all time and they were working together especially on the "Ringo" album.
@garychambers5850
@garychambers5850 3 жыл бұрын
I think the tempers was just between The 3 Beatles and Paul. "George" played guitar on "Johns" "Imagine Album" and Guitar on " Instant Karma", George played guitar on Ringo's "It Don't Come Easy" and Ringo did the drumming on Johns first solo album "John Lennon Plastic Ono Band" So the John, George & Ringo got along pretty well. Paul never worked with his old pals.

Interesting discussion John. I'm firmly in the camp of being glad they never had a a reunion. It would have spoiled the Beatles legacy in my view. Nice to speculate but for me glad it didn't happen. The best band in the world between 1962-1970, and they remain so today, without reunions. Having said that, it was certainly a thrill to see Ringo join Paul on stage in December 2018 in London. A cherished memory for sure.

I think the best time for them to reform for maybe a one off show would've been 1976 when Wings were on the US tour. Paul and John were on friendlier terms then. Like most things though, you can never recapture the magic of the era when they were at their height which was the sixties. John Lennon was quoted in 1973 as saying that if all four of them decided to do something, it would be something done in the studio which they excelled the best

I don't know if anyone remembers the band " *Klaatu* " I bought their album back in 1976. Their debut album by the Canadian progressive rock band released in August 1976. The album was renamed Klaatu when released in the United States by Capitol Records. The album is notable for its _Beatlesque Rock_ . To me, it was a really great album! I loved all the songs! I was hoping that it really was _The Beatles_ ... incognito as Klaatu! I still listen to that album today! It blows away anything current out! Crazy! 🌞

Since the late 1960s advances in technology allowed for the increased power of amplification and sound systems without losing sound quality, thus giving rock bands the opportunity to use larger venues. Paul McCartney & Wings had no problems to perform as an arena rock band in 1975-1976. If John Lennon had lived longer, the best chances for Beatles or Lennon-McCartney reunion might have been in the 1980s similar to Simon & Garfunkel's The Concert in the Central Park (1981) , or Live Aid (1985) or MTV Unplugged (since 1989) like JImmy Page & Robert Plant or Eagles did in 1994. In the case of Live Aid, Lennon would have probably performed in Philadelphia instead of London, if he had continued to live in New York City. I am not sure how anxious George Harrison would have been for any Beatles reunion, because he might have felt that McCartney and Lennon could have taken the leading roles.

Whilst I have never been a fan of bands reforming, (evolution and being 'of their time' etc) Nobody can convince me that if the four Beatles were still around today and spent a month in Abbey Road or Air Studios perhaps, that they wouldn't come out of there without producing some magic!

Years ago I made a compilation of the Bangla Desh show if the Beatles had actually played together. I pulled tracks from The Bangla Desh album (George and Ringo), Live in NYC (John) and Wings over America (Paul). I took tracks that were originally recorded by the Beatles (While My Guitar Gently Weeps, Blackbird, Something, The Long And Winding Road and Come Together), and solo tracks (My Sweet Lord from ATMP; the Bangla Desh single; Maybe I'm Amazed from the McCartney album; Imagine, a track that was to be issued a few months later; Woman Is The Nigger Of The World from STINYC from 1972; and Ringo's 1971 single It Don't Come Easy). It would have looked something like this (both sides can make up an album side): Side One: 1. My Sweet Lord 2. Woman Is The Nigger Of The World 3. Maybe I'm Amazed 4. While My Guitar Gently Weeps 5. It Don't Come Easy Side Two: 1. Imagine 2. Blackbird 3. Something 4. The Long And Winding Road 5. Come Together 6. Bangla Desh

Another fun video John. For them to reform at that show, 2 things would have definitely had to happen prior. 1. George would have had to enthusiastically invited Yoko to perform with John (very unlikely) 2. They would have had to have sacked Allen Klein prior to the concert for Paul to consider it (very very unlikely). Paul didn't show at the Rock n Roll HOF inductions in 1987 because of a much smaller business squabble even though they were on much better terms in that era, so him putting business aside for charity in 1971 doesn't seem possible. Anyway, that aside the set lists are tough to imagine. John might have done Instant Karma and Power to the People, plus a Yoko song of course. I can't see Paul doing anything off Ram, so maybe a couple "McCartney" tracks, Maybe I'm Amazed and That Would Be Something, probably solo at the piano. Don't think they would have done any Beatle numbers, but I could see them jamming together on some oldies they all loved like Blue Suede Shoes, Lucille, Matchbox etc... Probably would have been more tense than the Let it Be sessions, but who the hell knows lol

Beatles at Bangladesh a fascinating topic. The circumstances about the behind the scenes stuff remains fuzzy, so I guess we’re likely never to know the full (truthful and factual) story. But it would’ve been something if both Yoko and Linda were there (singing back up vocals). Maybe there are enough live tracks between the four circa 1970-1972, one can do one of those imaginary “Beatles at Bangladesh” albums 🙂? I agree with you regarding Peter Dogget (talking about big headed, Dogget is). It was just too soon, but good that least Ringo and George were there (plus Clapton and Dylan).

As for reunions never surpassing expectations, I'd say the 2007 Zeppelin reunion did, and so did the 1994 Elvis Costello & The Attractions tour (as did the five songs they did on the Brutal Youth album). It's also arguable the reunions of the Velvet Underground (1993) and Cream (2005) did as well. But I point to Zeppelin and The Attractions with less hesitation. Look at the comments on the videos from the 2007 Zeppelin concert. Everyone marvels at how well they pulled it off. They were not expected to operate on that level.

Whole point of the Bangladesh show was for George to show the world that he could lead a band and had good songs. As for the others, it's unlikely that Paul and John would have got it together again at all. They couldn't agree on how to wind up the band's affairs and John said publicly that he wanted to work with Yoko and not Paul.

For me, 1971 would have been too soon. By the early 1990s, they may all have had the time and perspective to truly appreciate their collective chemistry again. At that point, They’d all still been young enough to be in good voice and fiddle, so they could knock out a few classics. Personally, I think John would have been ready by age 50 or so and he’d have been able to convene the lads. If he had one fun, good writing session with Paul, we might have gotten a single. However, I can’t imagine any scenario where they’d risk tarnishing their legacy. It was set in stone and well worth protecting.

It was way too soon, the Beatles were in court 1971, Paul had served papers, on the others? Ringo had been threatened and kicked out of Paul’s house, when the others, sent him to ask to postpone McCartney album, for a few weeks, because Let it Be, was being released in the same time period? John would have been there, but Yoke, was giving him a hard time, and John wimped out, because she demanded to be included like, Dylan and Clapton? She was the dragon lady, let’s face it!

The other 3 were asked...Ringo was in Spain filming the western, "Blindman". He said "Yes". Lennon originally said,"Maybe". He asked George what he wanted Yoko to do...George said he wanted her to "enjoy watching the concert from the front row!" Yoko told John that he had power over George...and to convince him to let her take part. They had a big row about the show...and Lennon said, "Screw this"...and went back to England. Paul was asked...and since Allen Klein was involved with the show...he didn't want Klein getting credit for getting The Beatles back together...so he told George "No!". He told Rolling Stone that "we'd just broken up last year...and now we're joining up again? That's crazy!" But the fact that 2 Beatles played together onstage at MSG for charity was BIG news around the world! The other offers from Bill Sargent in early 1976 of $50,000,000...(the 4 actually did discuss this offer)....$3,000 from SNL in April '76...(J&P were watching at the show at the Dakota and almost went down)...the "Boat People" from Cambodia in September 1979...P...G...& R playing at Clapton's wedding reception in May '79 was front page news around the world...3 Beatles on George's single "All Those Years Ago" in May 1981 got to #2 on the charts...are George & Ringo going to play with Paul on his new album,(Tug Of War)..as a tribute to John?...(Ringo did...George stayed home)....are the 3 Beatles going to play with Julian Lennon at Live Aid in July 1985?...(Paul showed)...Prince Trust in 1986 and 1987? They finally got together in 1994 & 1995 with "Free As A Bird" & "Real Love". When Ringo played with Paul at Dodger Stadium in July 2019 it was BIG news again! It never stops...Thankfully! In the book "Lennon & McCartney in the 70's"...May Pang talked about John talking to Ringo about "getting the boys back together for a show!" He wanted to do it someplace different....he suggested...of all places...Syracuse NY. He loved it in October 1971 when they had the "This Is Not Here" exhibit. John...Paul...and Ringo had been hanging out at Lennon's beach house in Santa Monica where he lived with Pang. The vibes between the 3 were good...they jammed at the house..and had a good time. John suggested the concert should be held in late 1974...maybe with Harry Nilsson involved as well. McCartney asked Lennon to join him in New Orleans in January 1975 because he was going to record what became "Venus and Mars". Lennon was excited about MAYBE writing to with Paul again...BUT...he went back to the Dakota and Yoko in Jan/Feb.1975..and that put and end to the reunion rumors while they were all still alive.

Ringo has said in interviews that he was not asked as George did not want other Beatles involved, but Ringo just showed up (even flew in from filming Blindman).... John, the truth seems to vary depending on the interview and who you ask.... I suspect John agreed but just woke up on the wrong side of the bed that day (the Yoko story there may be some truth, but take with a pinch of salt, as she has gone on record saying she actually went to the concerts and hung around back stage).... McCartney I do not think he was interested, and really his relationship with George was always frosty after the Beatles and stayed that way probably right up until Linda died).... In reality I do not think it would have worked, as there is probably the chance that George would have probably done it that John did the afternoon show and Paul did the Evening show just to make some room for solo spots and allow his friends elsewhere a spot (also with Clapton not flying in until the morning of the shows and apparently in no state to perform, George might have kept the option in reserve)

Had John lived I am convinced the Beatles would have reformed possibly making albums alongside their solo careers. Even Roger Waters got back on a stage with David Gilmore and their split was far more bitter than the Beatles. John was already softening towards Pauls music expressing admiration for certain songs in the years leading up to his death.

With George's commitment to promoting Indian music, along with the genesis of the idea for some sort of benefit being from Ravi Shankar in the first place, it is highly unlikely he would have been cut or his set shortened. George would have shortened his own time before allowing that to happen. He understood the value of exposing such a large audience to Indian music, even if a lot of it went over listener's heads. I'm guessing Leon Russel would have been benched, along with Billy's number.

Even couples who are divorced still attend social events like weddings and birthdays and it doesn't mean they are back together Both John and Yoko should have understood the importance of the event and allowed just John to appear.

Greetings John! The Beatle reunion is something that always makes one wonder of what it would have been líke had they gotten together to play for some benefit concert in the 70's as well as in the 80's(Had John not been killed), but in all honesty The Concert for Bangladesh was George's shining moment and He was still at his peak, having John and Paul played at this concert would have taken the limelight away from George.I always thought that George was the one who was most relieved and benifited the most from the Beatles break up, and was the most annoyed when asked if The Beatles were ever going to get back together, so I find it kind of contradictory of George wanting this to happen -One last thing to add about the Concert for Bangladesh was that all the money that was raised was held up for years due to tax reasons, So I also side with John Lennon in his interview in 1980 about how benefit concerts are a rip off, dont really work or brings any real intended help to the victims themselves.

I don’t see the four together at one time on stage. Like you say, it most likely would have overshadowed the event. I could see Lennon contributing a song, like Dylan and others did a song. George steps back to be a band member.

Lennon had the excuse that if Yoko could not be on the bill then he wasn't going to do it. And Paul was still on the outs with the other three. If John had been alive when Live Aid happened it would have been easy enough to have him appear at the US concert and Paul at the concert in England. Give George and Ringo a spot (remember George was doing lots of appearances back in those days, Prince's Trust, Carl Perkins TV special, etc.) So a kinda-sorta Beatles reunion. At least all 4 as part of the same concert(s)/event. I think John would have been very exited about Anthology and would have loved it. But rewatch Anthology and see George's interaction with Paul. He keeps it to a minimum. Actually when they get through with one song they play Paul says, "So that's it then?" and George replies, "So I don't have to see you for the next 20 years." OUCH. I love The Beatles and their music but when they broke up Ringo kept on being Ringo, John got to be with Yoko, Paul lost the best band he was ever a part of and George was free.

Its got to be a no, no for Bangla Desh.If John had been alive in 1985 I think he would have loved to have told by Bob Geldof that the Beatles are playing Live Aid, get it sorted. They only ever did 20 minutes anyway!

Paul could have closed Bangladesh with "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band." As for Live Aid, consider just how seldom at that point Ringo had performed since Bangladesh. Even at the Last Waltz, he drums on loose instrumental jams. I doubt he would have been in any kind of performing condition. As for the Beatles reforming for a live performance generally, I agree it's best they never did. There was nowhere to go but down.

None of them would have wanted it , it was only 18 months after they split and relations were very strained . as per Graeme Thomson’s book on George Geldof wanted George to join Paul for Let it Be at Liveaid but George’s back was put up as he thought they were engineering a Beatles reunion . George only did anthology as he needed the money it generated having been ripped off by Denis OBrien

I don't think the Beatles should have reformed for the Concert for Bangla Desh. It would have been way too hard for them and the concert was great anyway. Another question: Should the Beatles have asked Billy Preston to join 1969?

John this an interesting theory, would they play, but with all they went through, it was not a good time, I would have liked them to reunite maybe one time, I can understand Johns thoughts, the magic is gone, The Dream is over, I think it is good to just imagine what might have been, it would be not a good time, I agree John with you, went there separate ways, and all the songs they wrote are so fantastic, I think it would be best to Let It Be, your friend, Steve

The idea of The Beatles reuniting for some charity concert has always bored me. They were never an arena rock band, like Queen. As John said later, the only proper way for them to reunite would be in the studio.

@@fshoaps no not correct at all the Beatles were surely a full fledge live band since way before 1964 in the early years were the Beatles would be onstage during the Hamburg Germany days 1960 1961 1962 1963 for four long hrs on stage .plus also in the later years from 1967 till 1970 the music Beatles were making couldnt be done live in those years because the sound and stage and the music effects didn't have the equipment that they started to have in the 70 s and 80s . Like u named queen for instance . Had they did have the things they have now trust the BEATLES would have be doing live concerts till the time they broken up ..... That's the very truth....... Plus all these artists now have no stage presence like the the great giant Beatles had in the whole entire wide world 👍💪

The Beatles’ divorce was a bitter one, and though we got a couple of new songs and three man jam and discussion in the Anthology project, it was just for financial reasons. The truth is that The three guitarists just couldn’t work together anymore. And even that rare moment when John and Paul played together again in 1975, if you’ve heard it, you’ll understand why this was an embarrassment, never to be released commercially, not even by Yoko.

Yeah.... The timing for Bangladesh was not good. Barring that... Was it physically possible to put the Fab Four on the stage? Sure. Make it a 4-record set. George would keep his opening set. They would have two to four days to rehearse together. To fill two sides of an LP they would have to play 44 minutes. The Long One from Abbey Road would have brought down the house. There are four or five songs from Let It Be that would play well on stage. That's a half hour already. The Ballad of Yoko and John is a persona favorite. Would be a chance to put Ringo and George on the song. Have to do 'Hey Jude', 'Day in the Life', and Sgtl Pepper. Forty minutes live for the Beatles? Yes. It was doable. No, I think the concert was too soon for a reunion. It would have to be post-Alan Klein. That's one. Not sure how Paul would have handled Phil Spector. Maybe an acoustic version of The Long and Winding Road would have 'closed up the wound.' And might have been a very good pairing for the way 'Here Comes the Sun' was performed on stage, two guitars, one courtesy of Badfinger's Pete Ham.

This “ridiculous” video was a lot of fun. I think something would have brought them back to play live together again in the early eighties, and they could have done a set of later songs never performed live before, that would’ve been great.

Regarding the song "Hey Jude" Why is Paul telling everyone that he has written a song about johns 6 year old child whom he visited when John wasn't there. The song is about finding a girl which is strange advice for a 6 years old. Is this not disturbing ? Is this worth making a video of ?

Maybe if they had the 4 Beatles cage fighting, that would have worked....Paul would have done Another Day and Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey, and Back Seat of My Car [the flip side] because they were his big solo hits in 1971. Particularly Uncle Albert/ Admiral Halsey as it was #1 in the US right around the time Bangla Desh concert happened. He would do a rocker called Smile Away, a stronger tune from the Ram album. I don't understand why he would sing Eat at Home, a weak album song from Ram. Also he would do Give Pakistan Back to the Irish to impress John...lol.

The idea that Paul would sing ram with Linda on George’s stage is laughable. Linda couldn’t sing and she couldn’t perform at the time. She was 8 months pregnant with Stella Besides Lindas vocals were and always were horrid. She was a laughing stock not only amongst fans but within the band. Listen to her background vocals in wings live albums. It’s the worst as Denny seiwell called her vocals. ‘Pits of the world’. Cmon man do your research

The Beatles reunion? The longer the break, the harder it was going to get. I could see them making another recording, but performing live? The pressure would be unbearable, people’s expectations would be through the roof? Anything less than a super spectacular show, would be a disappointment for many delusional people , whose vision wasn’t met adequately? I would have been happy with another record?
