Cancel culture only works to the extend where what they cancel impacts their life. Cancellers weigh the benefit (likes) vs impact on their life, everyone post about themselves canceling but never about skipping out on a cancel. Everyone never really cancels when big corporations makes mistake, i don't see anyone canceling Nestle, Energy companies, Netflix or even eating meat. Everyone is fine "canceling" shark's fin and brag about it, try asking them to cancel fish or meat. Truth is that we're mostly hypocrites and do it mostly for our own egos. Truly selfless people barely spend time on social media as it does nothing for them.

Sharkfin is bad example. It's not hypocrisy, it's logical. We are omnivores. We need meat,we have farms. Farms don't torture the animals,they dont let them bleed out while alive(except halal, that's why there's controversy) We dont need shark fin to get our meat bcos we have farms. And throwing them back without fins is torture.cos all they can do is wait for death to come.

@@RonLarhz i mostly use social media (only instagram) as a messaging platform because my friends insist on using that to contact me but i digress. apart from that it’s really annoying to see so many useless tiktok posts or shorts popping up. occasionally there would be a genuine post which would make my day.

The example given in this video is fair and serious, but cancel culture has grown beyond that now. For example, there's this twitter account that focuses on food, they share recipes, tips, and substitute for different needs (if you're vegan or does not consume alcohol etc). One day they suggested someone to go to a korean restaurant and not order rice for once to try and enjoy the meat alone for a new experience. And then they got dragged for it, saying that they're racist against asians for saying that because rice is an important part of asian culture etc etc. Racism is a serious thing, but there are ppl out there who's canceling people over rice by calling it that. Since then i realized that cancel culture is extremely dumb.

it has grown to the point that everybody gets cancelled for saying sth mildly offensive

Yeah that's cancel culture taken too far. I once saw someone say we should cancel Apple for their lotus emoji because it was a flower lily and not a lotus. And it was racist and important to Buddhism or Hinduism. Man that was weird. Luckily the comment section saved the video by actual Buddhist and Hindus pointing out that we don't really care about these sort of small issues.

In our segment that mentions Wake Up Singapore, we would like to clarify that they were not the party that wrongly identified the “sovereign lady”.

How about we stop caring so much about these online influencers who couldn't care less about their viewers, get thicker skin, and dedicate ourselves to something worthy of our time.

Cancel culture is toxic, for lack of a better word. It gives people the perfect avenue to play vigilante, virtue signal, and feel morally superior about themselves without any consequences and at the expense of the victims. I'd say due to their own insecurities. People who like to cancel always call for accountability but they themselves are not. It's really a 'who casts the first stone' situation all the time. The NOC-SGCickenrice saga is a good example. In the first couple of days people had started doxxing Sylvia before the story had developed. But when they realised there's more to it all of a sudden their balls shrink. Was she deserving of the hate comments and death threats? Were those cancelling claiming that they are morally better than her, can do a better job than her? Go for it then. Talk is cheap. When SGCickenrice (forgot the guy's name) started the page he was anonymous. Is that accountability? No. When he was exposed he claimed he was merely collateral damage. No he is not. He started the mess. Calling himself collateral damage is the opposite of accountability. Yet he so strongly called for...? Accountability. I gotta agree with Xia Xue's stand on cancel culture. I don't agree with all her views, but she has backbone. She doesn't give in to an overly sensitive society where people have to tread on eggshells in fear of creating offence. She owns what she says; in other words she takes accountability for her views AND actions. Sure there is a fuzzy line (which to me the NP lecturer crossed). But when most people have to walk on eggshells, that's censorship right there. The opposite of what most of these cancel cultures (insert bacteria joke) supposedly call for. Ok thank you for coming to my TED Talk. TL;DR Cancel culture is toxic hypocriticism.

I think you have given Singaporeans too much credit. In fact, Singapore’s mainstream media TAKES THE CAKE when it comes to State-Led Cancel Culture against opposition politicians or activists.

I think that you really missed a big point here, that as if you're acting that there is just one right perspective for this, and people must just subscribe from that. Don't you see that it is exactly that thinking that perpetuates Cancel-Culture and silence discussions and disagreement with the views? I don't like the concept of "Outdated" Beliefs, because that implies that we only believe something because it's time, that it is a fad, instead of being actually justified and right.

Oversensitivity causes cancel culture. I don't get it, just shut up and take the joke lightly, it's just a joke.
@namesensored95842 жыл бұрын
Cancel culture has its usefulness. But people nowadays start it just because someone has a unpopular opinion that’s generally widely thought otherwise by the majority and one person uses it to cancel by pandering to the emotions and feelings of the like minded.

The best thing in life is just follow what other people do. Mai keh kiang. If people do something just follow. Don't be the keh kiang person in the spotlight. Be the one in the crowd that laughs at the keh kiang person. :)
