Should we interpret the Bible literally?

What does it mean to read the Bible literally? Is that something we can or should do? Can we just read what the words of Scripture literally say and stop trying to put our own interpretation on them? Can any individual word have a literal meaning? When scholars talk about "literal interpretation," what do they mean? I want to challenge us to approach Scripture maturely and respectfully, accounting for the nuance of language and translation, and earnestly trying to understand the text in the way that the author intended his audience to understand it.

What parts should we take literally? Which should we not. Instead of translating based on our multiple meanings of a word for our time. Ask the question what did the original Bible authors intend to relay to their audience. The understanding from our time leaves the door wide open to any kind of intepretation based on what we think it should say to reflect our current society.

@@heavynetwork6804 Disagree completely. We have been studying scripture to live a praiseworthy life for many years and it is imperative that we understand the context, literature that it is written in, to whom it was written and we make sure we understand the original greek and hebrew it was written. This is essentially what Rob is saying. All of us have many tools at our disposals for this. There is no excuse. First is the Holy Spirit then we have many bible translations and we also have tools that break those down. Going from hebrew and Greek to english presents problems. For example, the word love. Greek has several ways to look at love not just one. If we take everything written literally we can become indoctrinated (self) by teachers that know less than us. It is imperative that we understand how to study the Bible ourselves and not just accept what others are stating. Rob makes that clear. Be wary of those who are uni-dimenisonal. Meaning over simplific in their approaches such as "we take things literally". Blessings.

@@BibleStudyCompany you say 'it is imperative that we understand how to study the bible ourselves and not just accept what others are stating.' , i truely agree with that, so thats why i do not just take what Rob says or what you say...🤷🏻‍♂️ I read the king james version 1611, when i read that bible, i can take everything literally untill the bible explains the symbolism. About the meaning of some words, of course its good to rely on the hebrew or greek, the moment we are going to take into consideration multiple meanings we have currently for one word, is when we will be distracted by other peoples interpretation, otherwise it doesnt happen...🙅🏻‍♂️ It is impossible to be self indoctrinated when we just hold on to the literal meaning of a word, impossible! The context will always support the word literally... Do you live under the law??? God bless🙏🏾🙏🏼🙏

@@heavynetwork6804 We don't know each other so it is impossible to know where you are coming from. For example, if you are of the HRM or Torah Keeping crowd then it benefits you to read things literally to stay in the "lane". But you may not be. It IS possible to read things literally and get out of whack. If one is submitted to the Word of God and knows proper ways to study the Bible then the Holy Spirit can help us read the scripture literally where it says to and symbolically or poetic as Rob mentioned when it calls us to do so. It is all about the heart. There are multiple meanings for words in the scripture and we need to know when to apply the meaning. Hebrew is notorious for this. And this concept is critical for our proper understanding of the text. As you know hebrew is based on verbs, then 3 letter consonants as Rob pointed out and then adding vowels which changes the words. For example, the hebrew roots people love to say that Torah is the law. But it also means instruction. And other words do as well. So we need to know how its being used and when. If we interpret a word literally we will miss the meaning in context. That is not a disputed fact. All of us need to handle the word of God carefully and reverantly. We hope to study to live praiseworthy to God. Blessings.

Duluth Bible Church and other good churches exegete Scripture based on the consistently contextual literal grammatical historical Bible study method. This means reading the Bible as we would any other text: looking for the plain meaning intended by the Author for His original readers and audience. Following this method avoids most of the pitfalls that have led the church further and further away from the truth. God wants to know the truth and He us not trying to hide it.

How do we measure the interpretation/revelation from the Holy Spirit on Scripture?
@TheBiblicalRoots
@TheBiblicalRoots Жыл бұрын
That's a great question, Andrew! I think there are a few guidelines we could keep in mind. For one thing, we know a true illumination about a passage of Scripture will never contradict any other part of Scripture. If it does, then it's not the Holy Spirit that illuminated it. Also, "Many assume that illumination is God’s provision of supernatural interpretive insight, the occasional “Aha!” moment where the baffled reader finally understands what the text is saying. Others might view illumination as the Spirit’s enablement to “perceive facts and judge the plausibility of arguments with greater clarity.” Still others see illumination as an exegetical safeguard, God’s means of rectifying the distortion of truth. Some even suggest that the Spirit’s role in interpretation is so absolute that the Spirit-filled believer needs no other tool but illumination in Bible study. Although these approaches reflect different degrees and emphases in the work of the Spirit, they have one thing in common: a primary focus on divine enablement to accurately interpret the Bible. While the Holy Spirit is certainly capable of providing interpretive insight, we’d suggest that illumination has more to do with appropriation than interpretation. This doesn’t mean that God never provides illumined clarity in the process of interpretation or that he cannot steer the Spirit-filled believer away from erroneous conclusions. However, the normative procedure for interpretation requires hard work and study-albeit enhanced by sanctified common sense-and those who neglect hard work and study do so to their own detriment. God the Holy Spirit can illumine the mind to exegetical truth, but we shouldn’t expect this to take place as a normative substitute for exegetical spadework. Illumination can quicken the mind, but it is the heart that God is ultimately after-your affections, your volition, and your resolve to obey in unconditional trust what he commands." -Fuhr and Köstenberger

To me we need to first actually look at the old Greek text with fresh eyes. We have missed so much. Like Matthew 24:5 we missed Jesus main and first warning for the end time. Go sit with that text in English and just mill it over in your mind like you never have heard it before. You will be surprised it will slap you in the face with in a few minutes. Then go look at the Greek text carefully and it will slap you again. Your heart will sink and you will probably cry but this is ok because this is FATHER working in your heart to show you the truth. Ok here it is just in case you do not see it. Mat 24:5 For many will come in/superimpose on my name, SAYING, ‘I AM THE CHRIST,’ and they will lead many astray. The word they translated as "in" is actually epi in Greek and it means to place something upon another thing or to superimpose one thing on top of another. Think about studying your skin in biology class. What is your EPIDERMIS? It is your top layer of your skin. Jesus was not telling us many people are going to come and be called 'The Christ" . Jesus was warning that they would call him "The Christ." I have read this verse many many times and because of the way we were indoctrinated in churches and classes it is hard to break out of that shell and see what it is really said. This literally flipped my dixie cup so to speak so I started digging even harder. Now go to the famous verse 1 John 2: 22 Who is the liar but he who denies that Jesus is the Christ? This is the Antichrist, he who denies the Father and the Son. Think about that verse for a while in your head slowly. Now here comes the kicker go to the interlinear and this is what it actually reads 1 John 2: 22 Who is the liar but he who denies that Jesus is NOT the Christ? This is the Antichrist, he who denies the Father and the Son. Feel free to check me on that in any version of the Greek. I have even looked at it in the manuscripts and they dropped the word ουκ which is G3756 and means "NOT" Then go look at Jesus statements when the apostles called him Christ and what he said Mat 16:20 Then charged he his disciples that THEY SHOULD TELL NO MAN THAT HE WAS JESUS THE CHRIST. Mar 8:29 And he said to them, and you whom do you say me to be? And Peter answered saying to him YOU ARE THE CHRIST. 30 And HE REBUKED THEM that to no one they should tell concerning him. Luk 9:20 -21 Then he said to them, “But who do you say that I am?” And Peter answered, “THE CHRIST OF GOD.” And HE STRICTLY CHARGED AND COMMANDED THEM TO TELL THIS TO NO ONE So is there any place he said I am Christ? We have one and it is mistranslated also MARK 14: 62 They mistranslated a would in Greek called "de" which is actually mistranslated in many places because it's primary function is as a negating particle MARK 14: 62 And Jesus said, I am NOT but ye shall see the Son of man sitting on the right hand of power and coming in the clouds of heaven. It is the place English got words like depopulate and demote etc. Here is the etymology on it Etymology 1 From δεν (den) from Ancient Greek οὐδέν (oudén, “in no way”). Particle δε • (de) (negating particle) Alternative form of δεν (den) Usage notes The alternative form δεν (den) is used when the following letter is a vowel or a plosive consonant (κ, ξ, π, τ, ψ, γκ, ντ, μπ). δεν and δε are used with indicative verb forms, but μην and μη are used with subjunctive verbs. It may sometimes be used to emphasize a statement. @@truthwatch2858 Very confusing. We pray to the Father in Jesus' name. well, then Jesus is not the Father when you have to add another name, the name of a human being. Did not Paul say that God is not the author of the confusion? Who has created this confusion that no Christian really understands? You should care more about your soul. Brent again adding my two cents here.... Sean speaks of a Priesthood before Mnt Sinai and one already there... It's not a Levitical Priesthood... The Levitical Priesthood is born at Mnt Sinai... The Priesthood is a Malkitzadek one... That deffinately goes back to Adam you see that going on In Terms of God's laws.... If we take the Book of Adam and Eve for example to fill in gaps in Genesis Adam felt bad it says for his transgression so he tried to make a sacrifice by taking some of his own blood to give it to Yhwh.... And In that book Yhwh says Adam because you have done this I will come in 5 days and offer my own blood... Sounds crazy but makes some sense. The Bible is a sacrificial book. There are levels of interpretation not just hermeneutics (spirited Message) from a western Lenz.. There is a eastern Lenz called the 7 rules of hillel... PAUL uses them. Also scripture says the heavens became defiled... What? How can the heavens become defiled... And what is Yhwhs secret weapon? Blood of course. So much to see so much to learn. The entire read heifer points to Yeshua death all of it. Regards Brent from South Africa.

It's good read all outside books... Jubilee or little Genesis others like Book of Adam and Eve vol 1.2.3 Paul definitely uses the 7 rules of Hillel in his writings... A must to learn for sure. Sean goes off course with the last 8 chapters of The book of Ezekiel. Why? You have to put them back in their scroll order... 13 scrolls.. Just look at the dating mechanisms the last 8 chapters predate the first by 5 years.... Ezekiels temple has nothing to do with milliniul temple of revelations.... One doesn't allow Foreigners in the other does and much more... It was promised to Israel's prince's they rejected it so its History that's it. Malkitzadek is the other issue.... Adam was a Malkitzadek priest... Jesus is the final Malkitzadek priest in that line. The question to ask today is what priesthood are you under? Take a look at 2 Peter 2 VS 4 and 5....... But the 8th person Noah A PREACHER OF RIGHTEOUSNESS..... the passage does not say that there were 7 others saved with Noah. Noah was the 8th preacher of Righteousness........ Who were the previous 7? 1.Adam 2.Seth 3.Enosh 4.kenan 5. Mahalalel 6.Jared 7.Enosh 8. Methuselah 9.Lamech 10. NOAH. SO HOW COULD NOAH BE 8TH? EASY... WHEN METHUSELAH DIED NOAH TOOK THE ROLE BECAUSE LAMECH HAD ALREADY DIED. NOAH IS A PREACHER OF RIGHTEOUSNESS (TZADEK) REGARDS BRENT FROM SOUTH AFRICA.

We should read the Bible Spiritually, which means, NOT Literally. For example, The Church is The Body & Bride of Christ. That means every person who has the indwelling Holy Spirit of Lord Jesus. Male, Female & Children are included. Yes, even Men & Boys are AS A BRIDE. This cannot be read literally bc it doesn't make sense. But in the Spiritual Sense, it makes perfect sense. We are created in 3 parts, just like Adam.... Body, Soul & Spirit. My Spirit either is of God or Satan. Both of whom have a SEED (DNA) = Y Chromosome. And why everybody has an X Sex Chromosome. X Mark's the Spot. This is where Jesus implanted His Seed (=The God Gene aka The Good Seed) so that His Seed may GROW & reproduce The Good Seed & produce Holy Fruit as an offering onto God. That's why God made Adam (and all humans) from the Dust of the EARTH (synonyms: Ground, Land, Field, Garden). So we would convert FROM the Image of Adam & INTO The Image of Jesus Christ. The Promised Seed (Tiny Mustard Seed of Faith) which was in The Blood is the Catalyst for our DNA makeover. Caution: The Devil also has an Evil Seed of Sin & Corruption which he plans to SOW in your GARDEN, essentially to "steal" the Bride of Christ. This is called a PARABLE which is also PARALLELISM bc the 2 Kingdoms of Heaven & Hell are very similar & yet completely the opposite. Satan is a master deceiver & a relentless counterfeiter of the Holy Trinity.

@@heavynetwork6804 God told Adam, THE DAY he ate from the Tree of Knowledge of Good & Evil, he would surely DIE. Did God mean physical (LITERAL) death? Or God, a SPIRITUAL Being, could have been speaking about SPIRITUAL Things, such as SPIRITUAL Death? Notice, Adam & Eve did NOT drop dead physically THE DAY they ate the forbidden fruit. And when Adam later KNEW his wife, she became pregnant. In biblical Old Testament language, KNEW = SEX & KNOWLEDGE = KNEW = KNOWING. So even the word KNOWLEDGE is not literally the acquiring of information, unless that I formation happens to be DNA/RNA CODE which is DATA. So SEX could be a DNA (DATA) transfer from the Man (or Beast) to the Woman (the Great Whore). Jesus is The WORD (GOD DNA) become flesh. He is The DOOR, The BREAD of Life, The LAMB of God, The Bright & Morning STAR, The WATER of Life, The ROCK, The VINE, The WINE of the NEW COVENANT.... How can Jesus LITERALLY be all these things?? He is also The TINY MUSTARD SEED OF FAITH (of Abraham), and The PROMISED SEED OF THE WOMAN (Genesis 3:15). Learn to read a PARABLE, ALLEGORY, METAPHOR. Will Jesus really throw people into outer darkness where there is wailing & gnashing of teeth simply bc they show up wearing the WRONG WEDDING OUTFIT?? Spotted, Blemished, Stinky & as Filthy Rags?? Thats incredibly cruel, isn't it?? Maybe the Garments are an ALLEGORY for our DNA (stitched & woven together). ReGENEration means a DNA transformation so that we convert from Adam's image (sinner = fallen) into Christ image (saint = risen). Joseph's brothers were filled with bitter envy bc their brother Joseph was given gorgeous & gifted DNA. Why would the children of Abraham, Isaac & Jacob want to kill their brother over a LITERAL robe? They were the 12 Tribes of Israel, remember? Born of Abraham's Blessed Seed. From GENEsis to reGENEration, the Bible is about God DNA, Satan DNA & Human DNA. Your DNA began as 1 single cell & multiplied to form many cells which formed into BODY, SOUL & SPIRIT. The Body of course has many parts to make a whole BODY. That's why Christ DNA (GOD'S SEED) is described as many different parts & aspects of Him. Just like you're not just Feet or Eyes, but many many parts.

@@wakeywakey8603 wow, let me address what you began with🤦🏻‍♂️ God told Adam he would die if he would eat from that tree, yes, God said that because Adam and Eve were not supposed to die. Jesus Christ died, He did not die spiritually, this doctrine would dilute the entire gospel, thats why i am against this...🙅🏻‍♂️ If we read parables or symbology in scripture, the bible itself will explain what the meaning is, we do not have to come up with any explanation, it would automatically be our interpretation, the bible is against that🙅🏻‍♂️ Please brother, i know you are a fellowbeliever, so i just want to warn you about corruption in our faith, stick to the truth, do not accept anything less than the truth...🕊️📖🕊️ God dna and all of that, its nonsense, we have human dna and God made us that way, only our image compares to God, but we are not as God, we are human...🤦🏻‍♂️ I know about the evil plan of the corruption of human dna, we need to be aware of that, but other than that we are flawed humans, sinners, none of us is good, Adam was also not perfect because he sinned, but he could have chosen to not sin with his wife and then he could have died a sinless man. That is how we are build, with free will, to be able to do good and evil, but our flesh will always push us to do evil, untill Jesus Christ returns and that is really soon...🕊️👑🕊️ God bless🙏🙏🏼🙏🏾
