In Arizona most of the parks that are worth living in are 55+ communities. Funny how the ones established get a cheap cost of living and the ones starting out have to pay 6% interest while inflation is sky high and rents are 50% income. I know a single mother living in a 2 bedroom apartment, makes $3000 a month and pays $1700 in rent.

@@euphrates74 , I do not have kids, but I have met a lot of people who DO have kids and have made similar transitions. People think that, because they have kids, they are obligated to stay on the hamster wheel. If you're willing to think outside the box and make some sacrifices to living standards, it can definitely be done. It is definitely EASIER though, without kids, less complicated. It can still be done though, with kids involved.

My husband, our three boys, and myself are living in a camper. We sold our house in 2021 for $410,000 and after paying off our mortgage and fees we had $290,000 in our pocket. We then bought 60 acres with cash and had a pole barn built with cash. My husband and I are now turning it into a barndominium. Yes, we could of bought a smaller piece of property with an already established house on it. But, when it's over said and done, we'll have a home that we are proud of, that's paid for, and a big piece of property that will be my children's one day. It's well worth the aggravation of living in a camper right now because we know what's ahead of us. A life free of debt. God is good!!!

It's a blast if you're single or even married, but without kids. I've been an RVer for a long time now and I love the freedom that comes with it. I do know people who do it with kids as well and seem to be pretty happy, but you have to be willing to make some sacrifices and cut-backs to your standard of living, for sure. Most of the people who do it, with kids, seem to be snowbird types that go wherever the weather is decent. That way, they can get the kids outside doing things and not have to be cooped up inside with them all day. Personally, if I had kids, I would have probably invested in a chunk of cheap, raw land somewhere, built a modest cabin and did the homesteading thing, ultimately with gardens, chickens, goats, that sort of thing. There are all kinds of ways to minimize and escape the hamster wheel, with kids, and still make it fun and rewarding for everyone. There would likely be an "adjustment period" involved, but living separate from the cookie-cutter mold that most people live can be a great escape for a lot of people. It's probably not for everyone though, some people are probably more comfortable in the cozy confines (and restrictions) of the system, which isn't a bad thing either, if that's what they want.

15 year fixed at 5.375 means the family needs to make $135,000 just to afford a $300,000 house....only 20% of all households make that and most of those are above the age of 45. This advice is not helpful to the vast majority

As usual, Dave did not ask the right questions! Are they stationary? What is their lot rent? I’ll bet it’s a ton cheaper than renting a house. Plus, it’s a 40 foot fifth wheel. That is huge for four people. There are people with 3-5 kids living in much smaller campers. Suck it up for another two years and then rent or buy. You can have a pile of money saved by then and have a decent amount for a down payment. She said they sold their house to make a big profit because of the market. I’m thinking $100,000. Then she says $17,000. What?!? She got herself in this situation for a paltry sum. Why? And the woman tells her she has to get a 15 year mortgage when they’re only making $90K! In what world? So frustrating.

I agree. We actually have a 43' motorhome(NOT 5th wheel because the moho was cheaper & we could buy with cash), 4 kids, plus pets. We are fine. However we do not spend much time indoors, my kids love their outdoor life!! We pay $1100/mo in LosAngeles. We love our life!!

Living in a camper is so much less expensive than an actual home or apartment. While in the military, I had several friends that decided to live in campers while moving every 2, 3, or 4 years. The fees for campsites were around 25 to 30% (or less) of their monthly housing allowance. They used the rest of the money to get out of debt, buy real estate and invest in their retirement.

They sold because they got money from their one and only asset, then bought a depreciating liability with the profit made, now interest rates are higher on homes, and the home prices are up. So basically, they got rid of their only asset to spend more money with no asset at all. I really want to know her thinking on this.

They lose $3,000 on depreciation asset over however much time they owned it. But now they go rent throwing money out a window with no asset at all, not even a depreciating asset. I was traveling 3 weekends a month for years. I stayed in hotels which was equal to renting a house, throwing away money. I bought a small camper. While it was depreciating, I at least had something tangible and useful. 10 years later I still have it. I saved at least $5,000 a year by having the camper vs hotel costs. The camper new was $10,000. Over years I saved at least $20-25,000. My depreciating asset is still going. Dave hates campers, if they get used twice a year, I agree with Dave. But if it makes or saves you money, it’s great. The only thing I believe in renting is a carpet shampooer.

I don't think the math is there for under 6 figures. At 40K someone else said the max house was 200K so it seems reasonable to add an additional 40K to put 350K to 400K house in range.

@@donaldlyons17 Just using an online mortgage calculator, for a $250k home, 10% down, the P&I alone is about $2k on a 15 yr fixed mortgage at a 6.5% rate. That's not including property taxes, insurance, HOA dues or PMI. According to the Ramsey plan, the monthly household income would have to be $8-9k+ per month take home. And where can a home be had for $250k lately that's in a desirable area?

Lmao i did the ''how much house can i afford calculator on their website''. This has to be some kind of joke. It says that we should buy a $70K house. But the tinyest apartment that's not even a real apartment starts at $200k. And a real house that isn't a complete dump starts at $350K+. I guess the only way to make this work is to spend these $70K on a time machine to go back to a time when houses were cheap. Btw what were these people thinking selling their house to clear 17K profit. They are going to spend way more money selling and buying back their house. I do not believe that this is the whole story. Get the husband on the phone! Here is what I am thinking: They had a home and a mortgage with a floating interest rate. When inflation skyrocketed, the husband was smart enuogh to understand (or already witnessed), that the interest rates would follow, increasing their monthly payments. While both inflation and higher costs for interest would leave people with less money to buy houses, leading to decreasing house prices. So Julie's husband was looking at a future with rising mortgage costs, rising costs of living and a falling price for their home? That's a fkn death trap for a family of 4 that lives off 50K! He sold the house and was immediatly debt-free (37K in cash minus 23K in debt). Now he is waiting for the house prices to drop to a level that actually reflects the current interest situation and tries to save up as much money as he can in the meantime. Which is crucial in times of expensive loans. Is he going too far by forcing his family to live in an RV? Yeah. Maybe. On the other hand.. is living in an RV not some kind of a "rice and beans, beans and rice" situation?

I see nothing wrong with it, it can be a good way to save money for a house in cash and expedite the wealth building process. With that said, I would do it as a temporary thing, not as a long term scenario. You should not live in a camper, long term, in my opinion and will need more space for your personal sanity at some point. Have the end date of living in a camper be when you can pay for a house in cash.

I can't find a reasonable apartment to rent for 25% of my take home pay... that's making $104k gross, let alone a house with taxes and insurance even with 3.5% rate on a 30 year, and I live in a cabin in the woods next to a trailer park. Campers depreciate. Sounds fun to travel and such but you will one day settle down. The kids will want space. They are going to be able to buy much less of a house than the house they had. For only buying a $20,000 RV, would have been better to rent house and still have it as an asset.

@@besweeeet2 Make sure your parameters of “completely sorted out” are not so strict that they prohibit you from having a family when you are able. If you look at having kids from a financial perspective, and really really consider everything, it will make zero sense and you may never have them. Lots of people fall into this trap. Of course the key is to visualize yourself as very old, and what you would have wanted your life to look like when you look back. Then work from there. It’s an exercise that pinpoints what you really value.

It varies from $0 to over $100/day depending on the vehicle,season,property,and day of the week. Pretty nice for retired and digital nomads. I had a great time traveling in RV with friends from Tampa Florida to Alaska in 2021. Met many RVers living in small vans and pickup campers to land yachts with varying sources of incomes and ages from 16 to over 80 years old. Can be either the cheap or expensive. Up to the individual.

What did they accomplish by buying a camping trailer? At $20,000 it has to be a pile of crap. They are not built for full time living with 2 kids and dogs. This thing has the resales value of dryer lint. So now, they lose there butt on the trailer and need 3 months rent in cash, the 1st , the last , and a security deposit. Ramsey group advise, getcha a little reasonable apartment, and getcha a little beater car.

I was homeless for a few months and was able to find a bumper pull 30ft, in the 9 years living in the camper, I have problems with everything, ac, heater, water heater, roof vent covers, it is more comfortable than sleeping in the tru, but they are not meant to be lived in full time

I live in my camper on a Naval Recreational Campground. I refuse to pay 2500 a month for rent out in town, while out working on assignment for about 2 years. I live next to a retired Navy Admiral that gets 14k a month pension, 3k a month for VA disability and 200k for his government analyst job. Next to him is a retired Army Col, next to him is a retired Senior Chief and an old Salty CSM and a bunch of Active Duty military. We are living it up. Armed Gated Community 🤣 Pool, playgrounds, trails, Beach on base, fishing pier. I don't know if I will ever go back to a rental or buying a home.

Yeah I have been living in a travel trailer for one year traveling the USA....I sold my house prior to this....all of the "stuff" that people have in their homes and do not need is crazy.....I had stuff that i got rid of that i did not know that i owned......there a people that have clothing that they owned in the 1980 s etc.....even now I live by the 12 month rule...if i do not use something within 1 year period it is gone baby...

Max 25% of income including insurance etc. America is so different from the UK, London particularly! I had to spend 45-50% of my income on a mortgage before any other spends, back in 2002 - 2010 and my loan was only c.100k (had some equity from the last house). I paid it off with extra payments too and became mortgage free around 2013/14. I look at American houses also, and see so much room, garden space and the like. Different world, you lucky Americans!

But the appeal of buying a house and renting an rv when we want to travel, but then it’s less of an adventure, it’s the same place every month not a new place every month or two which sounds fun.

My wife and i are living in our rv since January 2018 (and counting) and able to save 4k to 5k a month from our salary since we do not have a house payment, property tax, insurance, expensive utilities and we are free traveling on the road to build memories as tomorrow is never guaranteed. Now, because of our simple life and monthly savings, we will be able to pay cash on a house and lot down the road if and when we decide to hang the keys.
