I’ve never had a dog that had any major issues with thinking they were in charge. I guess I can understand the psychology behind not letting them on the bed, but as pack animals, I think sleeping with me makes them feel part of the family, and I love it. I love feeling their warm bodies pressed up against me at night, I like listening to them breathe. I’m all for dogs on the bed, or the sofa, or wherever I am.

I couldn't imagine not sleeping with my dogs. Besides keeping me warm in the winter, my German Shepherd puppy likes to stretch out beside me and lick me awake. Best alarm clock I ever had. :)

My dog sleeps in the kitchen, in his crate, with the door open, he loves his crate, it's his own private space. He's not allowed upstairs, it's the only part of the house dog hair free! He's my 3rd Labrador, 1st male.

I was widowed 2 years ago, my dog brings me comfort sleeping with me. She will only come up when asked too. And I'd have it no other way 🙃

My dog sleeps on the bed with me at night after he has his feet washed and teeth brushed. Then I give permission. This is the first dog I've allowed to do this because of the belief that it would destroy boundaries, but it hasn't at all and in fact seems to build our bond. I am consistent in maintaining the other bounds in our life so I think you are absolutely right. When I started to allow him on the bed I was prepared to reverse the decision if it had bad consequences. So glad it worked.

Two years ago I was diagnosed with CPTSD and for the a year I had night terrors (nightmares but far worse) two or three times a night where I now have to sleep on my own. My partners niece rescued a dog and after a short while asked if we could look after him which changed to do you want to keep him, of course we said yes. He is a mix between a German Shepherd and a Labrador and his name is Basil. Yes he sleeps on my bed, but most nights he alternates between the floor which I guess is cooler and my bed. When he recognizes I am about to have a night terror he will crawl upto me very gently and start to nudge me with his nose under my chin to gently wake me up. Guess what it works. The first year on having Basil and the second year of my CPTSD I have only had I believe seven night terrors. Not only do we love him for what he is, a very loving dog but also how much better I now sleep, he is an absolute god send. We didn't take him in for this gift and we did not train him, he has automatically done this from day one when he was only three months old and came to live with us, bless him.

My husky sleeps in bed with me. He warms up my spot in the winter and keeps my feet warm too. In the summer he sleeps on the other side or on the floor. He not allowed in chairs or couches downstairs.

I sometimes lie down with my dog on the floor, but he is not allowed to get in our bed although my son asked many times. He sleeps in the laundry by himself during warmer seasons and in our room or my son's room during winter in his own bed. All of us including my dog seems happy about the arrangement. For us it's more about form of habit. BTW, the first thing my dog does every morning when he wakes up is to make sure we don't sleep any longer than him. 😂

I have never had that in 30 years of dog ownership even when the dogs had stomach upsets and couldn't control their bowel movements. That said I dont allow the dogs to sleep on the bed when I am in it, they sleep on their own bed next to mine and may be allowed on the bed for half an hour or so in the morning.

When I brought Cooper home I said he was not allowed on the sofa or the bed. The first night he slept on the sofa, the second night he slept on the bed (he started out on his bed but jumped onto my bed during the night) my only problem is that he is so big, he literally takes up most of the bed and now after 4 months I don’t see how I can alter the situation.

For awhile.his they like to smell the human ... specially my dog but he have his own bed downstairs....i.buy him love sit..sofa still that sofa is small he need 2 sit sofa his big dog ... For awhile he can but not to stay ..he have his own. .. comfortable..place to sleep...thank you..

You said, when dog listen to you on a walk. Why should he? Walk is his. Why shouldn't I take him where he wants to go? I don't care where I walk him, if he wants to stop and sniff or eat the grass a bit. Having his freedom, I wish he stopped barking at smaller dogs or bikes. That's all.

I wouldn't say the walk is his as that insinuates he can do whatever he wants i.e run over to people eating, go over to dogs that are on lead, choose where he goes (near traffic). Rather I give my dog freedom to do what he wants within certain boundaries so there is an understanding i.e i lead, i decide where we go, I take care of danger and he operates within those boundaries. the boundaries are strict if he is pushing it/ doesn't understand which then makes it clear. If he is listening I relax the boundaries to a point. However often the more the boundaries are relaxed the less clear it is that you are making the decisions. This then knocks on to a dog having an overdeveloped sense of responsibility which manifests in having to protect against small dogs bikes etc. Everything is connected.

@@nigelreed I just don't have a need to be his god. On the other hand, right, I want him safe. But he listens when I have something tasty in hand. When he sees I don't, he doesn't care. He won't listen for free. For slice of sausage he could dance. He perfectly understands commend. For free he won't bother to look what I want. Hmmm, business is business.
