Sarah! I recently found your channel on KZbin and I have so much gratitude for your thorough and thoughtful videos. You share so much valuable information about what it's like to be an ND. I'm applying to SCNM right now! I finished my premed degree last June. After graduating, and doing some soul searching, I realized I was much better suited for ND school. Natural medicine is what I have turned to for the last ten years for my own health, because honestly, allopathic medicine has failed me a number of times. I still respect it and have benefited from it at times, but it hasn't been life changing for me like natural medicine has been. I'm 32, and it took me a long time to decide to go to college in the first place due to a very long health journey that kept me feeling so sick all the time, I wasn't sure I would do well. With hard work and determination, I got on top of my health enough that I became better functioning and took on college. I graduated in 3.5 years with a dual degree in biology and social science. Watching this has just confirmed for me even more that I am made for this profession. I could argue all of my trials and tribulations in life have molded me to be a great ND :) . I am definitely a late gratification, in it for the long haul, not afraid to live a low key (not glamorous), frugal, hard working, kind of individual because of my life path. I'm not even afraid to struggle or for intermittent failures to happen. I know if I just keep going, I will get to where I want to be. The biggest challenge I am currently tackling, is trying to find an ND that will let me shadow them during Covid. I've had no takers yet, but fingers crossed! Anyways, I love your videos and appreciate you so much. It's almost like I get to shadow you watching them!

Hello Chelsea Lyle! Oh my goodness! Thank you so much for watching and for your lovely comment! I get super excited when I read comments like yours. I am so happy that you've found my videos helpful. :) It is great you have taken the time to reflect on who you are and found this is what you are called to do. I truly wish you the best of luck on your journey! It is a very long and hard path to take; not everyone can do it. Sometimes I feel like I'm not cut out for it still. But it sounds like you have a lot of passion and heart, so I trust you will succeed in the future!

Thank you for making this video and being so honest. I completely get that you didn't want to cause discouragement, but considering all of this and the fact that the only university in CA where I live is Bastyr which costs 40k per year, I just don't know how anyone overcomes that initial business inertia with 160k in student debt. Hopefully with increasing demand and more people seeing the value of this, more universities will offer programs (hopefully non private institutions). I think I'll start by looking into other options to start:)

Love the video! I’m in grade 12 and really want to be a naturopathic doctor. I have been working with mine since February and absolutely adore her! I’m just a few hours away from you in Huron County. I’ve struggled with anxiety and depression for a few years and all of my family had struggled with chronic mental illness or other chronic illness. I don’t want others to have to live that way. Thank you.

I have recently been thinking about pursuing nat med in the near future and definitely needed a video as realistic as yours to help understand the profession and what daily life can look like as naturopathic doctor. Would you be able to share a video on your experience in school and what your hands on experience was like when you were learning and practicing in class vs. in clinic? Thank you and looking forward to your future videos 🙌

Hi Sasha! Thank you for watching and for your comment! I am happy that this video has helped you see what daily life can look like as a ND. That was my number one goal for the video! So thank you for letting me know it worked for you. As for your video request, could you be a bit more specific with what you are looking for? I have a few ideas in mind that I could share about my experience, but am not sure if they will address what you may be looking for.

@@sarah-wellnessgreatness Hi Sarah!! :) Thank you for your reply. I was wondering if you can explain how you're taught things like taking blood pressure, using a stethoscope, physical exams and using needles. I tried finding some information about it but most things come up on how to already do them. What was the experience like in class and did you or other students have issues getting comfortable with those kind of things? I assume it is a bit uncomfortable to do physical exams because they can be invasive, like you said, but of course it is done for the betterment of the patient. Did you ever have moments of feeling uncomfortable when you were learning? I have at least 2-3 years until I can apply to med school to finish the pre-requisites and gain experience because I completed my BA in Psych and never thought about pursuing med school. I'm currently completing a holistic nutritionist diploma and would love to hear about your study tips and tricks if you have any :)

Most realistic video about what it entails to be a NPD. I needed this. Been thinking about becoming a NP for 5yrs. This video helped me decide to go for Medical herbalism. I love medicine making and the study of diseases. P’s I truly have no patience for people who expect you to perform miracles on them without putting any work on their part, I would hate to be financially obligated to be miserable in order to pay for my student loan, which in the USA it cost around 250-300K for NP school or I would be faced with having to start a new career again with a huge debt. Much respect thank you so much 🌸🙂🌿❤️

Hello Suwara, thank you for watching and for your comment! I am glad it was helpful for you to watch. Yeah... Naturopathic school in the states is so pricey. That's why I went to Canada for school where it is more reasonable. All the best in Medical herbalism! I do want you to be aware of one thing about herbalism, and that it is a profession that may not be covered by insurance. So you might find it difficult for patients to come see you because they do not want to pay out of pocket for services. Please keep that in mind and see if the cost of school for herbalism is okay to pay for considering that people may seek herbal advice from professionals who know herbal medicine and can use their insurance coverage to see them (i.e. naturopathic doctors, traditional Chinese medicine doctors and some dietitians) take care!

@@sarah-wellnessgreatness Thank you for the reply Sarah❤️. No worries about lacking finances in Herbalism. I retired in my 30s and thankfully I’m in no need of money. I’m looking to study clinical herbalism to offer free/low cost services to people who can’t afford some pharmaceuticals or prefer to take a more gentler approach to medicine that don’t have health insurance or medical plans. Clinical Herbalism is usually 2-3 years depending the college and it may cost around $23k or less compared to 300k for the three year NPD program here. Thanks for the useful and honest information Sarah. Much respect and love, and many blessings in your job 💕☺️

Thank you so much for making this video. It is super helpful. You are a wonderful human being and I wish you the very best success. I highly respect you! You are a diligent practitioner and your patients are blessed to have you I am in the United States and I am wondering if there are ND's that work alongside MD's. I think this would be a very potent practice as they would complement each other. The other thought is to open the business in as affluent a neighborhood as possible as these would have a lot more disposable income and take better care of their health. However it may be more expensive to rent an office etc. What do you think?
@sarah-wellnessgreatness
@sarah-wellnessgreatness 3 жыл бұрын
Hello again EternalDestiny48! Thank you for your kind words :) I appreciate the comment. The idea of having an ND working alongside an MD is a great idea. I am not too familiar if people in the US are working like this, but I do know here in Toronto there is a ND/MD duo that work together. In my first year of school a ND and MD came to visit our class to talk about their unique practice. They see the same patients together. Envision a room with a patient, MD, and ND sitting together talking about how to take care of the patient. That is what they provide. To do this however, the patient has to pay a very steep out of pocket price, so their patients tend to be only very affluent people. About your affluent neighborhood practice question: Yes, if you try to build your practice in an affluent neighborhood, the rent for an office is going to be very steep. But if you believe you can market your clinic well, and of course provide excellent medical care, then the cost of rent will be covered. I will say though, that I have met practitioners who work in places that aren't very accessible, but the practitioners still run successful businesses. They are successful because they have helped a lot of people feel better and the word about their effective treatment has spread across town. So "word of mouth" is the key to growing a business, no matter the location.

Do naturopath doctors also usually practice homeopathy? Are there some naturopathic doctors that denounce homeopathy?
@sarah-wellnessgreatness
@sarah-wellnessgreatness 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Christian Lee! Thank you for your question! :) I am actually planning on making a video on homeopathy... at some point in time lol. Right now I am trying to finish editing a video on vaccines...hopefully I will have it done and posted in a few days so I can move onto other video ideas. To answer your question, I'd say the naturopathic community is very divided on homeopathy. Some are die hard homeopathy fans and the rest want nothing to do with it. I take a neutral stance on it. I do not practice homeopathy myself, but do not believe it is fair to say it is a completely useless treatment.
@sarah-wellnessgreatness
@sarah-wellnessgreatness 3 жыл бұрын
To add to my first comment, at my school (CCNM) when I was studying there between 2014-2017, homeopathy was a mandatory class everyone had to take. But after I graduated, the school decided to make homeopathy an elective course. This was done in response to the division people (mainly staff members) had about this treatment method. So now, students can choose if they want to spend time and money in learning about homeopathy or not.

Hello Nadia Judai! Thank you for watching my video and for your comment! At my school, CCNM, in first year there was biochemistry which involved learning about chemical reactions. Since I have an undergrad degree in Chemistry, it wasn't as hard as my upper level chemistry courses that I took at UBC, so to me it was pretty simple. I know that for my non-chemistry major classmates, it was a rather difficult course for them, so the difficulty one experiences just depends on how much chemistry background that you have.

Hi! I’m 18 years old and taking a gap year before college to figure everything out. Would you say it would be helpful to make as many connections (with NDs) as possible during my gap year, undergrad, and medical school with so I can (hopefully) be more secure in becoming an independent contractor?

Hellloooo FruitPiePlayz! Great question! It never hurts to start networking with people early on, especially if you are certain that being a ND is the career path for you. But I would not just limit your networking to just NDs. It would be better to make connections with people who are in other healthcare professions too (ie massage therapists, chiropractors, physiotherapists, MDs). This way people (who aren't NDs) know what you are about, and in the distant future, remember you and hopefully refer patients to you, or even bring you onto their clinic team. It is good to meet other NDs, but usually they will think about growing their own practice, rather than help you grow your own. Generally speaking when you are in the same profession as someone, you see each other as competition rather than partners. Hope that makes sense. If you have more questions, feel free to message me on instagram @wellnessandgreatness!

I am currently a nutritionist and i would love to do naturopathy but I'm worried about starting a business from scratch, how is that building a business by yourself going?
@sarah-wellnessgreatness
@sarah-wellnessgreatness 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Denise Findlay! That is a fair concern, but when you become a naturopathic doctor, you don't have to start out by building a business from scratch. Most naturopathic doctors start out by becoming independent contractors at pre-existing clinics. This way you don't have to worry about running a business AND taking care of patients. You can just focus on taking care of patients as an independent contractor. Over time, when you feel ready, then you can part ways with the clinic and start your own clinic. As an independent contractor though, it does take time to build up a client base, and right now, after almost three years of practice (and during a pandemic) things aren't exactly where I want them to be, but I know I have come a long long way from having a small non existent practice during my first year. Have a look at my other video called "how do naturopathic doctors make money?" :)

Hi Dhachu! I studied in Canada :) I think if you want to work in Canada or the USA, it would be better to study at the accredited schools in USA/Canada, so that it will be a super easy transition to work over here right out of school. If you study in India, you will still have to take two more years of courses at a school in the USA or Canada in order to take the NPLEX exam, pass the NPLEX exam, then get registered to work.

UDEMY application and ALISON application have all your queries regarding this subject. However, they're giving you practical nature cure subjects topics to study at home. They're private providers or expert's in this field. So they're authorised at UDEMY.. Happy, then go ahead, but remember they're not a Degree Certificate setups ❤ BEST BroRespects ❤😂🎉

Do you think I have a fair shot at becoming a ND if my analyzing skills are pretty average? All the other aspects you mentioned good for naturopathic medicine match up perfectly for me. But I find that I do my best thinking & problem solving after some alone time & rejuvenation.

Hi Alicia Nam! Thank you for watching and for your comment. My answer is yes. If you were able to say yes to the questions in my video, I think you have a great shot at becoming a ND. All the skills required to become a naturopathic doctor are always being refined and improved on a daily basis. Nobody starts off 100% ready to take care of patients. But if you have the desire to grow and improve, you most definitely will. Best of luck!

Honestly I don't know that naturopathic doctor education is different with medical doctor, I thought naturopathic is residency program after finishing medical doctor but correct me if I'm wrong. Anyway, sorry if my English not good 😁
@sarah-wellnessgreatness
@sarah-wellnessgreatness 3 жыл бұрын
Hello Dodi Khantri! Thank you for your comment :) For naturopathic doctors, there are some residency positions that you can apply to after you graduate, but there are WAYYYY more graduates compared to the small handful of residency spots available in North America. Also residency is not required for a naturopathic doctor to begin practice on their own. For medical doctors, in order to start their own private practice/work in a hospital, they have to go through a certain number of years of residency before they can "be in charge" of patients by themselves. Not all graduates get accepted into residency because there are also way more graduates than residency positions. So for those graduates, they won't be able to start their own practice until they get accepted into and complete residency. Don't worry your English is pretty good ! It isn't perfect, but I can understand what you are saying, which is the most important part. :)
