Having just bought this car I can assure you this SUV has all the bells and whistles on 👌 park assist is so fun and switching drive mode into sport mode OMG the power it unleashes. I am almost 3 years into my ownership of a CHR. So the 1.8 Hybrid engine. I love it. My second Hybrid, I had a Honda Insight previously and I am totally sold on Hybrids. Love all the whistles and bells as noted in another comment although I have yet to try the auto park function. They are remarkably agile and efficient. One thing to note, in cold weather your fuel efficiency will drop noticeably as the EV Mode will not kick on starting until the engine is up to normal running temp.

I have obsessively watched reviews before buying our 2017 1.8L C-HR and have been watching tons of reviews now after we bought it. And they are honestly 90% positive. The basic complains are that it's not a race car (obviously...), it's not a station wagon / full sized SUV (obviously) and the rear view visibility (which granted would have been a reason not to buy it if I would drive in a busy city everyday). I have mild regrets not going for the 2L version (also in part because of the very slow entertainment system in the old model), but we could buy a 1.8 hybrid with 30K (kilometers) from the first owner at a steal so yeah, can't complain :)

Nice honest review. Managed to hire one with low expectations since I heard from reviews that it was sluggish. Then I was surprised that it was quite quick due to it being the 2.0 engine. Very smooth, comfortable. I just don't know why Toyota couldn't give more options in choosing a brighter interior.

I really enjoy your videos, it's a great style of presentation so different from the variations on the Clarksonesque style which so many guys have followed for the past 30 years. Unfortunately, so many people on the road really need all the safety features which irritate you, especially as modern cars insulate people from the outside world so much and have thick pillars, small mirrors and encourage people to rely on cameras some of which have limited visibility. I don't like saying it but as someone who lives in the city and walks and cycles a lot, I'm looking forward to the day when cars are autonomous in city centres as so many people have zero awareness. Some people belong on the bus and it's nothing to do with the amount of money in their bank account.

I’ve been pleasantly surprised by this car. Using the 2.0 excel as a long term rental, I struggle to fault it. All the gadgets you need even a heated steering all good quality and being Toyota I’m sure it will last with the 5 year warranty giving peace of mind but the more surprising part is the engine and ride. I’m used to powerful rear wheel drive cars and I don’t feel hard done by driving this. In a world where manufactures are putting small 1.2 3 cylinders engines in crossovers and other small cars I’m glad they haven’t followed the crowd.

I agree Matt RE: the safety features that can't be switched off, or that become reinstated every time you switch on and off again. My dad's XJR has adaptive cruise, which I personally dislike, and whilst it can be adjusted down in terms of distance, it can't be switched off altogether. Annoying.

I recently was given one of these as a courtesy car as my car was being fixed. I was amazed by how smooth the CHR is. I averaged 48 mpg which is nothing like the manufacturers figures. All the bongs the car has makes the car annoying to drive. The hybrid technology is great and often I could be driving up to 45 mph in electric mode only provided you're very light on the accelerator. People do look at the car as the styling is funky and good looking. I think it's a great car for a couple with two small kids. The rear is dark and claustrophobic. The CHR is more economical than my 1.3 Toyota Yaris. Personally, I'd go for the new Toyota RAV 4 Hybrid or the Toyota Corolla Touring Hybrid.

I have a 3.5 yr old C-HR. It is a truly amazing car! The 1.8litre engine just gets better as the mileage builds. Mine is very quick indeed, I've driven the 2 litre version and, it's no better than mine. I've raced all my life, so I know a bit about quick cars; and my C-HR is - for a road car - very quick. The adaptive cruise is brilliant, as is the crash prevention system, (contrary to your opinion). The mpg is thirstier on a ryn than it is around town. That's how the Toyota hybrid system works. Average speed and consumption is displayed for each journey when the car is switched off; the best I've ever achieved was. 110mpg around town! I'm currently showing an overall average since new of 68.7 mpg! By any standards that's extremely good. Honestly? Ive yet to find a negative issue with my car, unlike you; I find mine very quiet in every circumstance, almost silent in fact. Unsurprisingly; I plan to keep my C-HR for another 2 years at least. I'd recommend the C-HR to anyone....as indeed, I have on a number of occasions. To sum up; a good review, but a car with maybe 50,000 miles on it, might have given you a better experience. When mine is ready for a change; I'll almost certainly get another one

@David M Wood Agree. There is nothing wrong the power on the 1.8 for day to day driving. I occasionally drive my fathers Prius with the same drivetrain. It actually feels quite quick off the line from the lights. Indeed it's quite easy to burn off (most) other cars at the lights! The electric motor (and E-CVT launch gear) gives it good kick from a standing start. Plus the smoothness and silent running in town are big plus points. I've driven VW products with DSG boxes and wasn't impressed. Jerky changes and roll on hills when you select reverse. Not good. If your in the know the Toyota hybrids are a great cars.

I've just started to notice these on the road in Australia, they do look similar to Honda's. If ever there was a car manufacturer that produces cars that are economical, offer good value for money, reliability and have another one hundred reasons why you should buy them it is Toyota. They do tend to miss out on the "God, I'd love one of those " factors though unless you are an accountant or even worse a Latin teacher at a private school. They are like marrying the girl next door rather than that stunner that went to a private all-girls school and whose dad owns a pub.

Another fair and dryly humourous review. 😂😂 Test drove one of these back in 2019. The back was, as you pointed out, dark and a bit cramped. I found it claustrophobic. On the test drive we also found it noisy compared to the Prius. Ended up buying the Hyundai Ioniq which gave more cabin and useable boot space and gave better economy (60 + mpg) despite having the optional larger wheels. As you rightly pointed out though, you will be unlikely to have any major issues with it as the build quality is so good and we never had any problems with our local Toyota dealer. Lots of them about down here so a good model for Toyota.

Can you add a decibel level on each review to remove subjectivity - download the app or get device - this way when you say it has road noise - you can compare to those quieter and noisier - quieter than a Rav 4 but noisier then rival A This would be really helpful and put you above other youtuber reviewers.. I'm not a fan of automatic breaking either. I was in a VW T-Roc not so long ago and the thing hard breaked on me when I had stopped accelerating, easing off instead of breaking. I could see the car in front of me and had the vehicle under control at all times. I fear this sort of crap is only going to get more intrusive as time goes on.

Looks crazy. I totally agree with you on the driver "aids" thing. I thought the driving test was to ensure you knew how to steer, stop, and generally drive a car before you were let lose on the roads. All these stupid systems do is take away the need to actually pay attention to the world when you're behind the wheel. Very bad idea.

Just a quick one, would it be possible for yourself to add time stamps to the video which the viewer can fast forward to if they wanted to find out something particular about the car? I quite like its futuristic looks and could fancy a go in one but couldn't see me buying one! Great review. I’m thinking about one of these having rented one for a week. Bouncing along Greek motorways it was super comfy, quiet and fast too… when you drive at more than 120kms the fuel gauge does fall off a cliff though 😉 Only issue: one cable charging point for phone or iPad. Just one ! And you can’t find the port because it’s buried under the slightly intrusive sat nav screen. You’ve nailed one aspect of this vehicle, you DO try to eek out extra miles, especially for local runs where the one button EV mode is great fun. Rear visibility is rubbish, but with the back seats down the load space is fab and it’s an easy loading job. It’s a nicer vehicle to drive than the Corolla estate hybrid which is low and sloppy compared to this…

You can lower the sensivity of the auto emergency brake. In my C-HR it is in the middle position. I never had an issue in three weeks almost driving it every day. I had two times a warning without auto breaking while park out in reverse and there were in fact once a car and once a pedestrian who appeared after two seconds but they were about 5 meters away.
