A Toyota Master Diagnostic Technician, Camry Owner and Car guy reviews the Toyota Camry TRD. The supposed Halo model of the Toyota Camry. Things are not good here folks.
The Toyota Camry TRD was one of the Toyota models that I looked forward to the most, I was actually getting ready to buy one when they were announced. That bubble bursted quick when I finally learned the technical details and actually drove one.
Link to the 2GR-FKS 3.5L V6 engine technical details:
• Should you buy Toyota'...
This generation Camry is a significant improvement and marks a departure from the previous generations. But the TRD model falls short.
The truth about the Camry TRD will hurt many Toyota fans and owners. I love and respect Toyota as they make fine cars, However the truth needs to be said. This is a disappointment and it has to be said as it is for the sake of continuous improvement.
It is a problem when the Halo car of a Model is marketed as a "bargain buy" or isn't exclusive. It is a problem that the halo model feels like a base model.
While the Camry TRD is a super reliable car to own, other trims in the Camry line up are reliable as well. It will take a very specific buyer to make sense of the TRD Camry. One that doesn't mind the base model features, Doesn't mind the bolt on type modifications for a Halo Model. Doesn't mind the extremely harsh ride for no significant gain in handling.

I love the TRD too. They were smart to have the basic setup here. Cause if they strap all the added cost onto the XSE? Then it would just be a FWD Lexus. Yeah, it is all "bolt on" but in factory and like this makes it a price people who have an interest in it would actually buy.

@@crazyman5520 Oh, that is what I mean. If it was done like with these complaints with having an XSE v6 with all the TRD stuff? That is in the 50k price range. At which point you could just get a good AWD Lexus. More than an IS, and nearing RC money at that point. It would still sell, but not do is intent of attracting and being obtainable to younger buyers like myself. It just wouldnt be worth the money anymore at those prices but still FWD. Getting into BMW and Mercedes. For cost of a TRD done up XSE V6? I could spend just a little bit more and pick up a Mercedes AMG A 35 with a Dual clutch, AWD powertrain. This is what I feel was not considered when placing the complaints. Camry TRD is a marketing car, to attract buyers. Performance at good money. But to try and be an upgraded XSE? Well, it would have opposite effect and be quite inferior on paper vs competition

I have a 2021 TRD and I love it! Look do your research, if you want comfort and amenities this is not the car for you. I prefer upgraded suspension, larger front brakes and a body kit rather than heated seats, a sun roof and whatever other amenities are available. I came from a base 2010 camry so I never had the amenities to begin with. The car cost about 35k so it will be stripped down. I would like a camry with manual transmission more horse power, rear wheel drive and all the bells and whistles but that would be 60k. Or a Lexus. Love it for what it is not for what you want it to be.

The thing is that the TRD should have been more differentiated that regular models in the sense that it has better almost everything, but we got a stripped down same engine same power car with slightly better handling and bigger brakes. Yes being the cheapest V6 Camry reflects that it will have some major options missing, but again we wanted it to be something better something that made you go wow instead of "meh.."

I think this guy is very observant and has a good review. Saying he wasn't bias though it bled through every sentence he spoke. It's a TRD. So it's Toyota version of a sporty family car. Now the steering wheel doesn't heat up the seats don't heat or have air, there's no arm rest in the back. You have no option for a sunroof, and it lacks button o navigating only when connected to the phone which is always the case. So I live in Florida and I don't need the heated anything. I'm pretty comfortable with the car. It looks sharp. Has pick up and goes. It's as reliable as it gets. I get plenty comments. I've had a 745 BMW a 545 BMW those cars were sold but depreciated so fast and became so expensive to repair. There is really no need for anything more in this car. I had sunroof and moonroofs on like 5 cars I owned and never used them. If you in a car that is fast and meant to take corners with a low center of gravity like the new Camry TRD you don't want a roof that when you flip the car you get a hair cut. And as far as the back seat arm rest. I believe they tightened up the skelton in the rear of the Camry for better handling. It's a mid size sporty family sedan. What else do you really need. I upgraded my stereo with focal highs mids and rear door and through a alpine 12 in the trunk. I put a so under the seat and the cars worth what it cost by far. P.S. to anyone who has this car. The Maps button does work BTW using Android Audio. I placed a magnet to hold the galaxy z 3 fold open and it has a navigation on the car screen. So that was bullshit. The cars sleek and excellently especially priced under 40,000.

@@dieseldouche7735 I understand your point but the TRD isn’t for everyone to me I love the look of it looks far more aggressive to me. The main difference is the TRD is less practical because the back seat don’t fold down. Also depending how you spec the XSE TRD has far less options I know mine does I got a 2020 TRD no blind side monitoring, ambient lighting etc etc lol but for me I just wanted the TRD because of the name, the looks and the sound which came stock from factory. Can’t deny the suspension and brake upgrades those do give it a slight edge but straight out the box can’t go wrong either way it’s all about what you prefer.

One thing to keep in mind with the TRD is that it has bracing behind the backseat to stiffen up the body when the car is driven aggressively. That is a good feature along with the bigger brakes. If that is important to a person buying the car, I would take that over having the rear seats fold down like in other models of the Camry. It’s important to think about how you plan to use the car before you decide on it. This car in the future I believe will become important to “tuners”.

I've got to say, that interior is right up my alley especially if it costs less. No heated seats or steering wheel? Sign me up! Less crap that can break. My 4Runner has none of that stuff, and I don't miss it! Pretty much every complaint about the interior was a plus for me. The only thing that would bug me is the single dome light in the center of the roof. Having even just simple lights up front high up is actually really good.

@Gamma00Ray

@@muscleeveryday Besides me just not wanting it because of the (potentially) remote chance that it'll break, it's also the case that I NEVER WANTED TO SPEND MONEY ON ALL THAT STUFF TO BEGIN WITH!!! Sad: This car could have truly been a trd car that one could track or auto cross on the weekend and drive all week. The lack of options are actually a correct decision for a performance car. If they reprogramed the transmission for more performance, and added a limited slip diff, this would have been a great car.

I bought a LIGHTLY (8,000KM) used red 2020 TRD in JAN, 2021 and the one I bought had many options this one doesn't have, also I paid below market value ($31,500 CAD) compared to ones that didn't have the upgraded options, just to let people know you can get this car with; 3-level heated front seats, rear climate control + vents, larger infotainment screens, dual-zone & automatic climate control. I daily drive the shit out of mine and it has treated me very well for 50,000km so far. The black roof/mirror paint is actually metallic and sheens purple/blue in the sunlight and it is GORGEOUS after a detail. I test drove the Accord and V6 Chargers and in my opinion this car is FAR SUPERIOR for overall build/finish quality, value, reliability, appearance, uniqueness and ride quality. It burns rubber for several seconds and really puts down the power quicker than you would expect (YES EVEN THOUGH ITS "FUN WHEEL DRIVE"). I HIGHLY recommend purchasing this car if you want a daily you're excited to hop into every morning.

I could dis agree with you more on the exterior. I love the looks of the 2-tone paint but I don't like the blue of this car. I love the body kit, exhaust tips, bigger brakes, and lower suspension. My biggest complaint is that the TRD Camry didn't have a 6MT option, now that would be amazing. I like the seat without full leather, I'm not a leather fan and I've never felt the need for heated and cooled seats. Upgrading the stereo is easy to get even better than OEM. I like that it simpler and you get the performance without the fluff. If you want the fluff get the XSE, if you want better brakes, suspension, and looks, get the TRD Camry. The other options are available, just give me a 6MT in place of the slush box 8AT.

As an Aussie I remember the Australian Aurian TRD. They wanted to compete with the Ford Falcon XR6 Turbo, but it was a disaster. Apparently they would not pass testing at 245kw, so they dialled it down to 240kw (320hp, cutting it fine). I was talking to a dealer who said they were a disaster and kept suffering catastrophic engine failure on test drives, hence the production run was very short. They put that same engine in the Hilux (Tacoma) TRD, and both these vehicles later made the famous lemon list. The Ford on the other hand had a 4.0 straight 6 called Barra, which has been favourably compared with the legendary Toyota 2JZ, and was in every Falcon Taxi for decades so there are a lot of them about. As they are old school bullet-proof, all Ford needed to do was cams, valves, turbo injectors, fuel pump, exhaust and tuning and the last production model pumped out a reliable 370kw (500hp).

I bought a '21 TRD with the big screen JBL system at MY closeout. It's more than I hoped for in the handling department. Not sure if it was mentioned, but unique to the TRD is thicker front/rear anti-roll bars that make for surprisingly flat cornering at any speed. Also TRD retuned brake master cylinder for a firmer pedal and it has a brake biased limited slip diff that works but will slow the car slightly on WOT at corner exit. Otherwise, they did a remarkable job with chassis tuning helped by the V-brace behind the rear seatback. I installed an AEM CAI and D3 93 tune with True Manual Mode that transformed the car. It now holds gear making for a more predictable, better controlled and grin inducing drive. The D3 tune was worth the TMM alone. The 330 hp dyno chart on the D3 site shows a fatter mid and especially high rpm bump that is the closest I've felt to a VTEC surge in a Toyota. Note that only TRD buyers can choose either all season or exclusive summer Bridgestone Potenza RE-050 tires for no upcharge. I got the RE-050's and they stick with their 140 treadwear rating but still ride nicely and are wearing well considering what they've been through. A bargain upgrade since they cost about $440 each at Tire Rack. Resale on these things is ridiculous. Low mileage '21's like mine are going for $38K-$44K around here, $10K more than I paid, but I'm not selling. It's a sleeper (except for the spoiler that I've convinced myself looks okay) and I thoroughly enjoy overtaking German sports sedans at track days but they don't and asked me not to return, heh. Nice review CCN, I like your style. We can agree to disagree. I think TRD Camry will age well and hold value as we're forced into EV's soon.

It’d be way nicer if the TRD version was really faster / serious vs other Camry’s, but on the other hand, the buyer still gets the bullet proof capability of the base Camry, I guess. When gas prices were bottoming out in 2017 the huge local (So Cal) Toyota Dealers were stuck with premium priced Hybrid Camry's for months and their attendant "flooring charge". Came sale time and we came up with what we thought was good lowball starting point. We were shocked when the sale price was $3,000 under our well researched lowball number. Wait it gets better. We found one we liked and said we'll take it-they couldn't find the keys. Someone went to the storage lot and brought another Hybrid to look at. Said they could easily fix the nasty scratch in the door-Pass. They had another Hybrid used for test drives but it contained the upgraded infotainment system. Some manager comes by and says "enough give they that one". Four years + Biden later gas has more then doubled and the 2017 trouble free Toyota Hybrid is getting 40 mpg. According to AMD and Scotty Kilmer this very nice car is good for 300,000+ miles.

Agree with your review but...all said, the Camry TRD is a better vehicle than the equally striper Honda Civic Si with half the engine displacement. Bulletproof V6, solid auto but not a dual clutch, good handling and nice styling. A good car. You point out that the XSE maybe the better car you make compelling reasons for. I would like heated seats of course and no ugly boy racer spoiler so our taste maybe similar choosing the XSE. Now my take as an automotive engineer. Skip the Camry. Buy a barely used 2019 or newer ES350 which is a superior car all the way around in terms of sound deadening, appointments...a more refined car with higher grade parts...same engine and trans. For $40K you can buy a barely used ES350 or if you must have RWD, get the IS350. Same company but with the Lexus name on it. The thing Toyota and Lexus has all over other brands is their reliaiblity....especially with the V6 when many are going to more rattley turbo 4's that are prone to failure at lower mileage.

During Dec 2019, 2 days after it got on local dealers lot, I bought a black turd for $29k. Early on, it was believed that the turd would be a unicorn like the 86. Last month, that same dealer sold a used turd for $39k. Anyhow, it’s the most grownup car I’ve ever owned (except the boy racer wing). The styling is not for everyone, the front spoiler is problematic, but I’m extremely happy with the turd. Not everyone wants all those options. It’s sort of like the old roadrunners from the 60s. Oh yeah, I’m a retired OG. We do a lot of traveling and get 32mpg @ 85/90mph. One other issue, the front painted surfaces take a beating 🤔. I ask, if you see an old dude come up on you at a high rate, be nice and move outta my way….

Hi AMD! Thanks for the great video and all you do for us loyal Toyota owners. I watch everything you put out there and take notes! I own a 2021 Camry TRD. I thought I would give a few thoughts on it as an owner. First of all, there is no comparison between the TRD and the other Camry models, LE, SE, XSE, etc. This car is unique. I don’t think it was designed as a daily driver. If so, it would have many more creature comforts as you point out. The only potential option in 2021 was a $1,500 upgraded stereo. No thanks. The one that came standard is pretty good. If you are looking for a daily driver, the other models will better serve your purpose. I believe it has too many gadgets as it is. An Economy Mode? Really Toyota? Not in this car please. I bought mine to have some fun with. I drive it in SCCA AutoCross events. I drive it on some major road courses in TNiA events. And, I will drive it in some Time Trials this summer. Am I a racer? No. Is this a Race Car? No, not at all. Is it fun? Yes. I am an Automobile Enthusiast. PROS: Same great Toyota V6. Lowered stance. Tuned Suspension, Larger Brakes, Larger Wheels (Diameter and Width), Stiffened Body with Cross Bracing (Therefore no fold down back seat as you point out so you can’t pick up Curtain Rods at Home Depot), Upgraded Exhaust with a nice note (Who really cares about that for the extra 1 or 2 potential HP increase. Noise doesn’t impress me). CONS: It comes with All Season Radials. Really, Toyota? Biggest mistake on this car. I switched to Michelin Pilot Sport 4S for now. It is worth the $1,300 upgrade. SUMMARY: This car is not my Daily Driver. As a matter of fact it’s in my garage now since last October and I’ll bring it out again in the Spring. As you say, this has an upgraded handling package vs. the other Camry’s and it is fun to drive. I’ve had mine well over 100 MPH and in some pretty aggressive cornering on closed circuit raceways. If you are using this as your daily driver you are not going to be taking advantage of the things Toyota did put in this car. As for looks, you either like it or you don’t. I hope this helped some potential buyers.

I like the XSE more after this. I did not think this would be the case. The best would have been to have a stiffer car and setting, slightly lowered XSE with a few upgrades more. The TRD brake calipers, the wheels and the shift knob. I’d rather have the XSE interior with a TRD cluster and the XSE display. Overall you will not go wrong with this drivetrain. Sometimes I wish that Toyota would be more like Audi, BMW and Mercedes-Benz with the great personal preference possibilities there are, but then again not. Were that to happen the production process would not be as rational and it would also make the production more costly. A less rational and obviously less standardized way of production would ultimately take its toll on the build quality and the overall quality of the brand or lead to way higher prices. Thanks for yet another great video! 😊

I think for a 20s to 30s person, it's probably ok (although expensive). If you are older and don't want to be racing at every traffic light, you're probably better off with a subdued XSE. It's a shame that those ground effects and spoiler elements will look tacky in just a few more short years (they look tacky now actually), unless the owner decides to preserve the newness and never drive it. I personally did the whole suspension upgrade thing back in 2004 with the Mazda6 (double wishbone upfront and multi link in rear, which the TNG platforms have now in the rear)..mainly a Racing Beat 3/4" drop with linear spring rates, Koni yellow shocks, and thicker front and rear sways. It did handle 'better', meaning it felt different, but it never felt like it was worth the extra money and work that I had spent on the upgrades. And it was more dangerous in the snow or in the rain since it was way more prone to oversteer. That car was fine being left alone, and I imagine the newer Camry is the same way.

The front windows freeze shut all the time due to the up turn by the door mirrors. The gas door also freezes because of the placement and angle of the dangle. The trunk when full open is 1 inch from the rear glass. Sometimes when you get wet snow and temp drop the snow freezes to the trunk lid and contacts the back glass. I swear one day the glass will break on my car because of this design. Also the mid vents above the info screen can't be shut off but the outside vents to keep the side windows clear can be shut off. Toyota got this backwards! Storm conditions require proper direction of air to keep windows clear. This feature is lacking on the new Camry. These aren't the best winter cars on the market. They're great 9 months of the year tho!

@@FrankyRedEyes I’d have a Camry or Corolla hatchback if I went to a car. I have a 2016 4Runner and love it except for the MPG’s.

Haven’t watched it yet. Paused it at one second. My guess: TRD is not worth it. Buy the XSE v6 instead for a little more and get dual climate control, sunroof, etc. My 2008 Camry xle v6 was AMAZING until some jerk ran a light and hit my wife (she’s ok now).

Agreed. Plus you can mod the XSE to match the TRD and still get the same features

Couldn’t agree more. The TRD is basically a lowered, rougher riding SE with a V6 and body kit. I already think my 2019 SE is too low since I have to go at an angle in the driveway to my work parking lot to avoid scraping.

Thought about getting a 2022 tc trd, glad I've been putting effort on research and watched your very informational vid. Basically we're paying for "the look" on the outside. I have to say though, it's a sexy sedan without depth. May stick to the older models

Thank you AMD. Totally agreed with you. It needs to be 400 HP 350torque AND AWD TORQUE Vectoring! 12” screen with 360 degree view and 16 speakers and with subwoofer. 21” wheel with real Brembo brakes. Also with air suspension. The price can elevate to 40K with all what mention.

You can’t even use all the power with front drive until it shifts out of first gear.

This is perfect and I think toyota nailed it! I'd take the reliable v6, brake upgrade, suspension upgrade, with factory trd mod accessories vs having any of the interior options for the price point anyway.

All this options are a deal breaker for me. Sunroof is the major option for me, so I won’t buy a TRD Camry. However, I will get the TRD Avalon because it does offer a sunroof.

Have one, really nice car and a lot of compliments and people also wonder what car it is. Fun car but it’s too low for the snow it gets stuck easily and have scraped the front splitter multiple times under so it’s not visible. And he’s so right about the rims have hit so many pot holes and idk how the rims haven’t bent or gotten a flat tire
