This spoke to me so much. And I love how heartfelt Marie's answer is. Some of the things I've found helpful ✨ therapy, Yoga with Adriene, walks, making sure I eat enough, sleep, a couple of decent people I can confide to, coffee dates with myself.. And a reminder to myself that this shall too pass. If you're reading this and you're feeling down, you're definitely not alone 🌺

When I'v felt down or overwhelmed I journal and ask my guides, please help...and then I write down all of my frustrations. My guides give guidance and loving comments that give me a sense of peace. Then the next step is to follow the guidance. I dont always do that...but it always turns out that I should have listen. Resently I have stoped trying to fix lowness that I fell, but just let it be, sat with it, listend to it, felt it deeply...and it taught me so much about what I need in my life and what needs to change, sometimes I think low mood comes just for us to be able to sit down and reflect. Sending so much Love to you Marie and to you Joanna ❤

Very welcome topic! Oprah once said you’re responsible for the energy you bring to the room. I get that it’s great to take responsibility for your emotions, etc. But that has also made me feel like if I’m depressed, sad, anxious etc. I should just stay away from people because I don’t want to be a burden. Don’t want to ruin everyone else’s vibe. Which makes me isolate more and then get more depressed, anxious, etc. So, sometimes that kind of advice from Oprah and some other leaders has a tough effect on those not doing well and still need community without feeling like a burden.

(this is my standard script i post in most groups as a practical guide for managing mental health issues.) Symptom of mental health problems: if youre self cutting & self-harming, have anxiety, depression, suicidal thoughts, severe mood swings, hearing voices. You will need to resolve this from the following aspects : -spiritual -emotional/psychological, -physical (nutrition/exercise/medication) aspects of this. Where emotional wounds that have gotten toxic - forgiveness is the most powerful antidote. 1)Spiritual/prayer - Pray(and do fasting) whatever your religion. It provides tremendous relief and is a powerful combinations. Fasting weakens the body and strengthens the spirit. People have been practicing this combination for centuries. 2)Emotional - Forgive as many times as you need to, it will remove the toxic emotions from your soul and heal your body as well. You dont need to reconcile (meet/embrace/befriends with the person who hurt you). Praying for the person who you hate or hurt you is an excellent way to get over these emotional wounds. 3)Medication - you will need medication. Change your meds, dosage or doctor if youre not getting the right results. 4) Physical - you must strive to be physically fit/exercise/sweat as much as possible to flush the toxins from your body. Eat healthy & minimize junk/processed foods as much as possible. 5) Psychological - learn to actively manage your thoughts & emotions. Continuously indulging in toxic self-pity & despair will impair your decision making - it will make you accept lower standards in relationships/values/morals. Self indulging your (toxic) emotions will take you on a downward spiral of bad decisions. You need to exercise quality control over your thoughts and actions. You need to analyse the situation & ask yourself - IS IT REALLY SO? Get some external feedback from a trusted source. How you feel about a situation and the actual reality may be wildly different. Don’t maintain fixed-in-stone or unrealistic expectations of salary/life/people/jobs/etc - it is like a rock around your neck. It will destroy you. Let go and free your soul from crazy self-imposed standards which are usually unrealistic. 6) Serve a cause other than yourself - volunteer at least one hour a week helping someone who is less able; help an old person clean their house, visit or call someone who is lonely if you are able you. Once you can do this - it will give your life more meaning and purpose. 7) Live outside your head - do gardening, exercise, running, work with your hands. Adult colouring books etc. Learn new skills & keep GROWING with new interests and hobbies. Try to read actual books and do not use electronic devices before you go to bed. Sleep at fixed times & MINIMIZE your social media use. 8) high nutrition diet - make sure your body is supplied with adequate Vitamins & trace minerals like zinc, magnesium, folic acid , Omege-3 oils & animal fats in your diet (eg Ensure Milk powder by Abbotts Labs, cod liver oil capsules etc). Drink plenty of water. Avoid caffeine as much as possible, it disrupts your sleep pattern. Avoid sugary & processed foods.

I love Marie's suggestion and would add onto it. I pray and ask God for help, but I also ask my two closet friends -my husband and my best friend to pray for me. Not only do I get more prayer, but it's a way to reach out to people who care and let them know that you aren't doing ok. They can then check on you during a time when you normally don't want to reach or or extend yourself socially. Even if you aren't a person of faith, if you ask people of faith to pray for you it serves the same purpose...you connect with people.

I have been struggling with anxiety and depression for a couple years now (ups and downs) and the surrendering to God is what helps me the most. God is real! There is a higher power that is greater than all of your problems. It's such a relief to know that it's not just you versus the "random stuff life throws at you". I tell myself that there is always a way through and that even if I don't believe it now due to my hopelessness, it's a verifiable fact. What I found to be helpful also is to take myself out for a walk. Even 5 min in your worst pyjama is ok and works to boost up your mood. Just today I didn't feel like going to an interview I had because I was so tired of everything and wanted to give up. But I told myself: we're going to take a morning walk, that's it. And so I went and I don't regret it.

Your honesty and vulnerability in responding to that question is amazing. We all go through these moments! Recently, I recognized I need to get to a specialist to truly work through issues that always bring me so down. These particular issues I kept “sweeping under the rug,” but I ended up tripping on the mound under that rug almost daily. Looking forward to finding some real solutions - it was hard to get out of bed sometimes. I’m so hopeful now. I actually spoke to God and surrendered my situation to him, and that was the day I took action towards different solutions. Walking my dog for a longer period worked for me too. Thank you Marie!

Thank you for the video! I go back and forth between spiritual and logic when having identity disruptions, as I have C-PTSD and Depersonalization/derealization syndrome. Most days, I have trouble working more than a couple of hours. What helps me is my career--I write dark psychological fantasies to heal myself from my traumas. Though triggers overwhelm me, this path, alongside therapy and safety in my home, has allowed me to reduce suicidal ideation. Now, I'm working on my self-sabotage habits. When fibromyalgia flare-ups get to me, I get migraines (like today) so I wear glare glasses while watching encouraging videos, like this one. After therapy today, I plan to meditate, then spend time with my lovely husband--the first person who's told me to be myself, instead of a people pleaser. Gotta love someone who wants me to be me! If you're feeling down, let yourself cry! Singing in the shower (especially Evanescence) helps me get the emotions out so I can sing happier songs, pumping me up for the rest of the day. I recommend Dialectical Behavior Therapy, as it reinforces tools children naturally have, which I had forgotten after years of feeling controlled.

I've been feeling a bit overwhelmed, anxious, and depressed the last week- and this whole video hit me like a ton of bricks. It also re-highlighted where I've been neglecting self/personal care, and how non-negotiable those needs are. Perfect timing (isn't it always?)! My go to ideas: taking a walk, doing yoga, always having breakfast (or one meal before noon- even if it's an apple!), morning pages. Things that get me out of my head and into my body.

Something that help was "planned" rest. My body is so programmed to function like a robot with schedules, and leave rest only when there is some time left (if any). So, the way I could tell my body that is OK to rest was to schedule rest. I scheduled a two nights and three day vacation. It think it might have saved my life, or at least delay diseases. I was going in spirals of feeling low, not being able to exercise because I could not get out of bed and the mornings are the only time available to exercise for me, and going back to old patterns of thinking very, dark thoughts (I dont want to write them in case they are triggering for somebody). But, the scheduled rest time gave permission to my obsessive working brain to do nothing. I plan to do that every quarter or every three months.

This is a great question. And great answer!! For me, I too have been in some really dark places, but never as low as ‘ taking my life’ low. And, I too did the same thing ( called out to my highest) the same thing happened to me. I had a warm sense of peace wash over me. I got through my son’s cancer shi*, my daughters ( almost lost them both)… some super trying times. I also pushed through it… exercise ( when I could) ate really well when I couldn’t sweat. In addition… depression is a red flag, the body sending us. Dehydration, believe it or not, can trigger depression. Learned that in some advanced nutrition courses I took. Exercise is a huge mood lifter. Also, since I’m in TSW ( topical steroid withdrawal) where my skin flares get worse before it gets better, all last year I had to navigated these waters. I could not go out anywhere, do anything… I found ( and others) found a supplement 5-HTP ( a serotonin booster) helpful, before resorting to pharmaceuticals. And finally, 2 books that have saved me, The High Five Habit, anything Brene Brown 😊 and The Four Agreements.

I’ve gone through this where I’ve surrendered and been able to go on anyway it’s not easy. But sometimes there is a difference clinical depression is a real illness it’s NOT a choice. It’s absolutely necessary to seek help from more than our higher power. I’d offer resources as well here because depression can lead to suicide and that’s real and permanent. Praying and uplifting anyone whose suffering right now. Not everyone has a chemical imbalance so it’s important to address the difference. Thanks, Joy

Some things that work for me: listen to worship songs (Wonder by Hillsong, Nobody by Casting Crowns, etc.), read the Bible (Ecclesiastes, Book of John, Romans, etc.), I walk at least 4400 steps weekly ave, and guide a few churchmates and community members through their own struggles. Although lately, I have felt depleted due to workload, slowly I am able to recover. But the feeling of being lost during this time is real. Thank you to your videos which I have also been watching (esp your interviews with authors). These help me process my emotions and thoughts too. 🙏

Good for you and everyone that this advice may help. However, because we use the word "depression" so loosely, I just want to say (as someone who is dealing with clinical depression for more than half my lifetime, I'm 45) I just want to say that this is not for us, me and people like me. What you describe is not depression. There might be days when I or people like me can talk their mind out of a bad place. But most days, no matter what you say or do, it's not going to get better. And I just want these people to not feel bad about themselves if they stumble upon this kind of advice and it doesn't work for them. That used to happen to me a lot in the past, especially when the advice is coming from someone who I generally admired and followed. But now I realize the difference. And I can stop listening and not blame myself, or feel guilty because I just can't seem to be able to do it like they say.

love your honesty about a sensitive subject that is looked down as a weakness especially when your in the business world and the world of giving business advice, you show u can experience darkness and depression and survive in the world of business, an inspiration:) I do struggle with the higher power thing unfortunately so wouldn't work for me, I do find immersing myself in nature if im heading to a dark place, prefer to just nip things in the bud these days. Nature and woodlands are underrated anti depressants, and puppies:)

Meditation is a wide open self therapy that can be very helpful. I spend quIte a bit of time with all types of it, taking time to be aware without controlling anything. First... Inhale deeply for count of 4, holding for a count of 7, exhale completely for count of 8. Repeat 3-10 times. Always inhaling thru nose. Bring in the air and completely let all of it go, relaxing anxiety. Feel the body relax completely: shoulders forehead eyes jaw lips tongue throat. Observe the rise and fall of the belly, breathe automatically without intervention, let it become very shallow...just notice. Eyes open, look straight ahead, relax the eyes, note the edges of the visual field or peripheral vision, the panoramic view. Close the eyes and maintain the widened gaze. Be outside in nature in a park or in the country. Listen with eyes closed...to birds, cars, people walking and talking, feel the heat or the cold, the wind. In the mind, as thoughts arise, look for each thought as it arises to see where it comes from. Once a thought comes, look at it directly and be with it without force until it fades or is displaced by a different thought. Repeat. Thoughts are ever changing. When we relax, we can let them go. When experiencing strong emotions or thoughts, look at them directly without trying to change anything. Observe their change moment by moment. They have a life of their own. See the impermanenence of it. Even physical pain changes moment by moment if you look. When you look you can see many things you don't notice. Close the eyes and look for the observer of thoughts, the "I" who is the thinker. Who or what is "I"? Who is it that feels emotions or bodily sensations? Where do they come from? Where do they go? Consider that 10 million cells die and are created every second... beyond our consciousness. The nose itches, the stomach growls. If we resist the urge to scratch, or eat, the urge subsides. Think of a loved one (not a close family member, can be a pet). Imagine how much you love them and how much you appreciate them. Think of their suffering. Consider how much they deserve well-being and happiness. Feel it in your heart. Then do the same for yourself. Journaling is similar but it has the action of writing it down, very therapeutic to simply put pen to paper and write the thoughts to see want the mind wandering is...then to read it. Often I rise at 3 or 4 am without intention (I go to bed around 8 or 9 pm). This is prime time for meditation. I have an armchair and often fall asleep in it early and spend most of my time there meditating, reading, occasionally listening to TV with eyes closed. When it's dark, I leave the lights off except for a night light. I'm 100% in front of a computer when working. Minimalizing in moderation is my world. There's no boredom because I observe a lot of the time...it interests me and helps me stay curious and wonder at the world. I rarely watch the news. I enjoy watching and talking to others. Observing without judging.
