Should you get the Sky Q 2TB box?

I thought I'd do a video to say whether I think it's worth getting the Sky Q 2TB box to watch UHD content on. These are my own thoughts :)

I work at Sky and I can tell you the 2TB box is much better than the 1TB. You get more storage. You can record more programs at the same time than the 1TB. You can also watch in Ultra HD on Sky Cinema , Sky Sports and some other Entertainment Channels. Also when you set the Sky 2TB box resolution to 2160p it will upscale normal programs from 1080p to something higher depending on the program.

David Forrest That’s Fair enough however the reason for the lack of UHD content is because many companies such as BBC and ITV are not ready to go live on UHD so we best Sky can do is place UHD on most of there Sky channels such as Sports and Cinema

I had the old sky hd box, I phoned up to see if they could reduce my bill and they offered me sky q 2 tb plus mini box and a new dish all for free. They reduce my bill by 25 pounds. A very happy bunny

I'd ask them if there's any chance of a free upgrade to the 2tb box. Always worth asking :) I was given it for free as I asked for a 1tb box and he said "I'll do you the 2tb one for free as you've been with us before".

I think the very latest 1tb boxes are uhd compatible, they also come with the voice control remote.

At the time when I first took out the subscription a couple of years ago, it was only the 2tb one, which is when I did this video, but if it's now changed for the 1tb one then that's really good :)

I just received my 1tb box only to find out you dont get full HDR on the 1tb and you do not get dolby atmos passthrough with the 1tb box, sky have now posted out a 2tb for free because i wasnt happy! Although it says the video is uhd, it does not download and play in hdr (also hlg and hdr10 are not included with the 1tb) The only reason i knew it to be different was my tv was not informing me hdr picture was being played when playing back uhd which it did last year when i previously had the 2tb box. Sky should make this clear on their website. Also, using netflix on the sky box didnt play hdr or atmos so im using the tvs in built netflix app until my 2tb box turns up on monday.

They often use the same dish but the LNB is completely different. They changed my cable too. Luckily i only paid £75 for the 2tb box and no installation fee

That £75 is the installation fee. If you decode you no longer want SKY TV then you will have to return the box.

@@wezz69 This may be true but you get a contract with the SKY Q box that states that if you no longer want a SKY Subscription or you no longer want to use the box then you have to return the box. If you don't return the box within a period of time SKY will charge you the full price of the box when it was new at retail price and you still have to return the box. If after a certain amount of time you fail to return the box they will take legal action to have the box returned. Also yes it would be very easy to remotely lock a SKY box if it is legally not yours.

I got the 1TB SKY Q box 8 days ago and I am not one bit impressed with how its built. The box gets very hot and very loud. The box needs a cooling fan and I'm sure there isn't one inside the thing. Its the Hard Drive that gets loud , very loud. Also the engineer who installed it was a cheeky bastard and threw the old LNB in my bin. My bin was empty so I took it out of the bin in case I need to go back to my SKY+ HD box. Which is very likely to happen. I've heard of stories of the SKYQ boxes overheating so bad that the main board fries.

I have sky plus HD box . was thinking to buy Sky Q but I do not think so now. So much waste of money. I watch so many channels for free. The only reason I was looking to buy sky Q. Because of storage . I have recorded so many programs on nature wildlife. Now I got only 14% space left. I do not want to delete those programs. As I watch them again and again. Especially lions, sea and so on. I probably stick to sky plus HD.

It is a great box, there's no doubt about it, however, most new TVs now have built in things like Netflix etc, so you can use the TV for on demand if you have it. Not only that but if you don't have a TV that's got extras, you can buy an Amazon 4K TV Stick and use that as multimedia streaming, such as KZbin etc (you don't need a 4K TV to appreciate it or use it either) :)

I have had my skyQ 2TB Box and mini box for about a year now, I don't rent it I own it. it cost me £199 which included insulation. I have not have any problems with my box and I only pay £51 a month . I have everything except sky sports & children channels. I even have box sets and Netflix too. I think sky is good value for money as I watched sky every night

Do you have to pay for anything engineer call outs? If you don't, then you rent it. I'd check your contract because as far as I know, it is only the previous Sky HD boxes that you actually owned

With the Sky Q box, you're actually renting it so you don't own it like you used to before with the Sky+ ones. I thought about getting something else but they change the LMB in it so you can't use Freesat or anything

Just paid £119 for a 2tb Sky Q box and 2 x mini boxes too! The engineer replaced my old dish and put a new dish on for me at the back of the house. And took my daughter's dish down on the front of the house due to her not needing it anynore. I'm actually saving money because of the multiroom charge on the old Sky HD.+ Also because we have all the Sports and Movies package that's why we get 4k Uhd! 👍

If you're happy with what you've paid, then that's awesome :) I've returned to Sky and haggled them and got a 2tb for no charge, got normal channels and now Netflix and the Boxsets, the fastest broadband they do but we didn't have sports or movies and we're paying £41 a month.

Yeah, I was considering Sky Q but when I tried to check out the various packages on the Sky website. the pages that contain the information were down and have been for a long time now, which is odd, I'm not sure what is going on there. So anyway, I inquired on their community forum instead and to cut a long story short, the Sky Q box set up is just too flaming complicated at the moment and nobody seems to have any definite answers as to where it is going. For a start, because the dish I have isn't compatible, as I found out, it will mean either Sky having to use their adaptors to try and get it to work with their Q box or they would need to put up a new Satellite that is compatible with it and there are already too many dishes up around where I live including the communal one which is what I use. The other thing which is really even more ridiculous is that these Sky Q boxes were intended to be dish free anyhow. So that if someone like myself didn't have a compatible dish or even if someone had no dish at all, they could still have all the benefits of the Sky Q box via their internet connection but that's just not happening. This is despite Sky's promise to make their boxes dish free. The cynic in me might say their dishes are too much of a money-spinner for them to give up installing and charging a fee for but I'll give them the benefit of the doubt and just presume that it's a technology hurdle that they have simply failed to get over so far. The bottom line though, is I just don't think it's worth it at the moment, it might work for some but I think Sky Q has got a long way to go before it will really be able to replace the old boxes, which some hastily threw out, I have a feeling they'll be sorry they did for some time to come.

Good points you raise there. I think that as time goes on, there'll be more emphasis on WiFi and most TV's (some already) won't have an aerial connector and everything will be streaming. What makes me annoyed with the whole WiFi at the moment is that my friend can get a faster connection on 4G than I can using the router via BT. You'd think that BT would be putting more money into getting the lines faster. Finally the line rental charges are really annoying and wish that they could be abolished along with the TV licence!

HI. Our sky hd box became faulty on 4th nov 2019. A complaint was sent. Very unhappy at the time cos they said a engineer will be out for a cost of £95. NOOOO. More complaining then they dropped their guard. Tomoz 24th dec 2019 we have a engineer coming with sky q silver 2tb multiroom free intall no cost of the new boxes new sky q hub all for free. Six weeks without sky and they tried to take out the monthly payment. Sometimes it pays to hold the big guys at ransom. Bad publiciticy for them is good business for us. A free upgrade for nothing. Maybe its that we are a 7 year customer. Anyhow looking forward in nxt 14 hours.

Excellent stuff. They did the same thing with me once and I got free engineer's visit. With Sky Q, you only rent it so all repairs are free. Only negative is they change the LMB so you'll not be able to use Freesat afterwards but you can still use Freeview

I live on an island and I set up everything when I installed SkyHD with multiroom years ago. I hung the dish, ran the cables, set the boxes up etc... never once saw a Sky engineer, received my viewing card and phoned to activate it.....HAD TO PAY AN INSTALLATION FEE.... I should of charged them!! Great video, one question: Does Sky Q receive UHD content through the dish or though the internet, as I live on an island our internet speed is very low, maybe 2mb. Cheers

Hi, thanks your your feedback. I couldn't answer the question 100% correctly but I would imagine that it gets it through the dish as it will only be the on demand or catch-up things that will need internet connection. I hope I'm right in this but with the initial lack of UHD content and the cost, we didn't bother trying to get it again.

@@matthewrk84 to be honest, we've not got HD with it because they said we could have it free for 2 months but then I found out they're charging us £5 a month, so I've cancelled it. Got Netflix and Boxsets for £3 a month and finding that I can watch some 4K videos on KZbin (including some of my own (hint hint :) ))

Ok it turns out that my 1TB box does not have any sort of cooling fan. When I turned it upside down the bottom is very open and when I shined a light in there all I saw was asmall poxy heatsink. I was talking to a guy in an electronice store and he told me that the SKY Q boxes tend to overheat so badly that the mainboard inside literally burns. Seriously I have no idea what sort of 2.5" HDD they use but its the loudest 2.5" HDD I have ever heard and I used to work in a computer shop. A 2.5" HDD is usually inaudible. If I owned this box I would install a small fan (Its possible to get small and quiet fans that would work effectively on the thing) on the bottom of it and try to find a way to replace the HDD with an SSD.

That might cause an issue with Sky. Technically you are only renting the box, so if you modify it and they find out, they could charge you the retail price of the box.

I agree with Guppy, don't tinker with the box at all. If there's any noise from the HDD, contact Sky as it might be a faulty hard drive. Maybe you got the one that I had before I cancelled Sky the first time!!!

Do the mini boxes need to be physically connected to the main box or is it possible to move them around the house to any TV. ie can I have one(a mini) in my bedroom and if needed, use it in my kitchen with just the power cable and a hdmi cable??

No the mini boxes use a WiFi connection that the main box provides so the mini box can be moved anywhere in the house. You may be able to get a deal if you ask for 2 mini boxes (buy one get one free), just ask them and see what they say. They might offer you the extra at half price if not free. Good luck :)

Just finished my contract with Sky Q.. Thinking of getting IpTv or similar which gives u all the channels sky charges a fortune for. Just wondering if there are any Tv Boxes similar to the Sky Q box out there to use with this service?

I've no idea I'm afraid. The only ones I know of, that allow you to record but don't have all the channels are Freesat and Freeview ones but you'll have to change the LMB if you want to watch something other than Sky via satellite because the ones they install with the Sky Q aren't compatible with anything else. The LMB costs around a tenner I believe

I'm not 100% sure about that because I left them completely and had to return all the equipment but I'd be inclined to think that would be the case because you're only renting the Sky Q box and as such, if you're not paying them anything, then effectively you're not renting it and they'd want it back, so I'd say yes to that, however most new TV's these days have built in KZbin etc and I find myself watching that a lot, even though I've got Sky Q and Netflix.

@@castle6742 yes indeed. I don't think there's that much difference between Freesat now and Freeview but it's always nice to know you can still get Freesat if you don't upgrade. I believe you can purchase an LMB for about £10 and swap it but if you went to Sky later on, they'd change it anyway.

Im a engineer , ya get free sky q warrenty ya get a lnb if ya dish is fine its a wide band not a classic, and can you cant get a 2tb memory for 65 quid anywhere thats why ya dont keep the box, multirooms 8 pound so ya wrong there uhd is free then aswell, problem with people like this they want things for free i see this everyday returning customers from other companies because they realise sky is worth the money, stick too channel 1 too 5 mate if your not happy, its just not for you

Since I did this video, I have negotiated various deals with Sky over the past 2 years and have been really happy with them and being a loyal customer, they really do reward loyal customers. I understand what you're saying and remember, I did this a few years go, but at this moment in time, with gas and electricity prices going through the roof, people are trying to save as much money as they can wherever they can and if it means cancelling the TV then people will do it (I'm seriously considering it when it's up for renewal because I'm fed up of paying a TV license as we rarely, if at all, watch live TV. I may do any updated video on these issues in the near future. I think Sky were losing too much money by letting people keep the older boxes because if they failed for whaever reason, out of contract, then Sky would have to provide another box as part of the contract when they negotiate a new contract.

you're complaining about a £65 installation for the 2TB box when it costs €195 here in Ireland for the installation. I paid €145 for the installation of a 1TB box today which will arrive next week.

@@MultiRetroManI know. the prices for SKY here in Ireland is crazy. They are charging €29 extra a month for the movie channels here. I don't even have the movie channels or sports channels. But my 2TB SKY+ HD box is starting to crap out on me now. With the past few days channels will just pause for a few seconds without any reason and resum again or with the past six or morer months when I watch a recording and the box is recording something when I finish watching the recording my channels just show a blue screen. When I change channel the channel change banner shows but I still only get a blue screen until I reboot the box.

@@Steve30x I know it's no good to you now but I was having the same issues with my box and I just bought a box off eBay for €25. I always wait about a year after these new 'upgrades' release and the price drops significantly . I believe the 2tb skyq box is now 'up to' €60 for existing customers. Not sure if that includes installation. Either way, I agree, we do get more ripped off over here.

@@guppy9713 I won't buy a used SKY Q box because they are being sold illegally. When you cancel your SLY Q subscription you have to send the box back to SKY. Its in the contract. You only rent the box from SKY

Yh but normal sky box is 1080i so a upgrade to a sky 2tb is 2160p I think plus I have a 4k tv so surely itll look better on any channel aka eastenders without paying

That's what I thought but when I had it, the only way to watch anything on 4K, like the world cup, I had to watch it on the BBC iPlayer because they weren't showing anything on it. Plus, you've got to have either the film's or sports channels to watch 4K things, which they didn't tell me about

Hi at the moment i have a old style 1 TB all singing and dancing black sexy looking Sky + HD box that came out a good few years ago All i watch on it today is the free stuff i cancelled my subscription a good while ago because you can find most of the stuff sky broadcasts online and pay bugger all to download it Now you can buy sky Q boxes all over the place most end up on Ebay Marketplace on Facebook etc etc mostly being the 1 TB boxes occasionally the odd 2 TB will turn up but your paying top dollar for them What i want to know if i managed to get hold of 1 or 2 Tb Q box would i still be able to watch the free stuff thats on the sky platform as i do with my old HD box on the same theory of keeping your old sky viewing card to watch things like Channel 4 and five other channels etc even though you have no subscription My biggest worry is that Sky want to one day move from satellite to just using your fiber optic broadband to watch its services Am i worrying about bugger all or is it worth just getting the 2 TB Sky Q and wait for the transformation

I know when they install the 2TB box, they change the LMB so I was lead to believe that the older boxes won't work properly with it and if you want to use Freesat, you have to replace it with the older LMB.

I had it installed today after an 11 week wait for installation!! I have wanted it for years!! i was very happy with it until i tried to bookmark!!! I thought i must have been doing something wrong!! Why the fu?? would they remove such an essential feature?!!!! i had concerts on my HD box with 20 bookmarks! i could go to the song i want within 2 seconds!! Now it's the same as having a VCR!!!This is completely backward!!! I don't know if i can live with this!! it's a mindblowingly dumb decision to remove it!! i'm fairly certain every sky box has had the ability!!! imagine if DVDs or CDs had no bookmarks!!this is essentially what sky have done to me!!

You can use the remote to skip minutes but I'm not sure whether you can go to a certain part or not

@@bigtom1001 what annoyed me was the removal of the reminder when a programme was about to start. They said that because it can record more than before, it just records it and you can watch it when you want.

I'm not exactly sure I understand what you're saying there? I have a 4K TV and they didn't say that there wasn't much 4K content, well they did but they said there's a lot more being added for free but to watch it at the time it was recorded, you had to pay for HD channels, which is understandable but also films or sports as that was the only way you could see anything in 4K. I watched the football in 4K using the TV's BBC iPlayer app, you couldn't even see that on Sky!

@@MultiRetroMan Personally myself I'm not a fan of cable and besides you can't get virgin or any kind of cable TV in the Channel

@@Infinity9_ the only advantage with Cable is that it's not usually affected by bad weather (wind etc) but Virgin Media are terrible. I've done other videos on them as I changed to VM but had no end of issues

I suppose if you've got money to throw away, then by all means get Sky Q. That is if you enjoy watching the blue screen of death! But if you want to watch complete programmes, you'll have to get an old Sky system rigged up that you can flip over to! Then you'll find that you're watching the old Sky HD system more - but paying a fortune for the rubbish Sky Q system!

I've not had as many problems in the 14 years with Sky as I did with Virgin in a year! As for costs, Virgin increase their prices more regularly than Sky and I find Sky much more reliable. Not only that but the customer services are 1000 times better than Virgin's!

@@MultiRetroMan Myself, I think the Sky Q system is good for some, but isn't what it's cracked up to be for others! Perhaps the Sky Q 2 will be better. They've sent most of their staff home during Covid, that's fair enough - but their customers still have to pay the full amount when their wretched Sky Q system go wrong! Which is not fair at all. Unfortunately my wife likes Sky, so...

@@TomRelubbus I think if Virgin was okay, we may have kept it (albeit getting it cheaper than they wanted to charge us after the first year anyway) but the coverage in our house was awful. The issue with Virgin (and some people have commented) that they've been without service for days or weeks and never got any compensation. This I can believe as they didn't honour what they said they would do for me initially, so I had to make several phone calls and complete a deadlock letter at their request. If Virgin's systems worked properly, they hounoured what they said they'd do and their customer services were good, then they'd be worth having but after I confirmed to leave them, they sent me a letter the following week advising the prices for the weekly charge will be going up to £48!!! Mega rip off!!!
