The reason I like vintage is not only because it’s nostalgic for me but it’s the opposite of what you said it feels like a endless chase and I love that there are a lot of vintage cards that I just will never have because of the price and I like that keeps vintage super interesting because I’m always looking for those deals one Hundreds of chase cards

I'm new to the hobby (Oct 2020), and would love to get some vintage cards, and probably complete a base set, but prices are outrageous in the UK, nothing like the US market. So modern is really my only option. Alt Arts are my aim.

I'm mostly interested in collecting the new silver border modern cards starting with scarlet and violet! All of my older cards get sorted into pokedex number, newest sets I keep as a set That way I can keep empty binder spaces for the sets i intend to complete, but the older stuff I wont feel that same pressure to collect whole sets

I've become a mostly vintage collector over the past few months. The pull rates in modern sets are just so bad its really not fun. Why spend $40 on an etb to maybe get a $2 v card and some worthless bulk when you could get a nice wotc holo with that same money.

Open new stuff for the fun of the gamble but acquire the major pieces by purchasing well investing singles. Ask for photos. Grab low auctions. Go wild but keep a max price in mind.

I love modern sets. Yes, I grew up with earlier generations (1-4), but modern sets are fun to collect, readily available, and cheap. I think there is room for both vintage and modern in the hobby, but I definitely believe modern will age well

I started out collecting mainly base set unlimited because that was my childhood nostalgia calling. But since then I've slowly moved over to collecting modern because of how eye-popping the alt artworks are and the FA trainers. I feel confident in sets like Evolving Skies going up in the future because of how much love they're getting now, and also how attractive the eevees will remain over a long period of time. Great video. As a vintage sports card and memorabilia collector, I recently got into Pokemon because my son is into it. I figured we could do something together. Considering I understand the importance of rookie years in collecting, we are collecting/completing the 1999 base holo set in PSA 10 condition. On top of that, the high grade PSA 10 stuff has a low pop when you consider the amount of cards graded (for instance the Charizard sits at 1.4% that are graded a PSA 10). Of course if I collect something I want to make sure there's a high probability it will be worth more than I paid for it in the future. With that said, it's simple supply and demand on the vintage stuff and understanding the population reports for rarity. After all, they are not making anymore 1999 base unlimited cards.

I collect all modern, I started with 1ed edition base set and around about TR sold everything for pennies on the dollar. Got back into it in the last 1.5 years. Been collecting sealed Japanese, Japanese promos, sealed modern English and currently working on the Eevolution set in Evovling Skies which I am now 2/3 complete.

Very well described Jake, how there are really 2 markets slowly emerging from Pokémon cards, vintage & modern. It kind of makes me think of PTCG, with standard and expanded or legacy😄. As for me, a year ago, my collection was 95% vintage. Now, 10% vintage, 90% modern. I don't plan on selling either for the moment, specially the vintage Base set & etc., probably never will.

i agree with you on celebrations charizard. not only are they every where but the holofoil is the worst of all the base set zard reprints we haves seen and the big yellow pika head distracts from the card. right now evolutions zards are going for as much or cheaper than the celebration zard so if your looking to get a base set zard without spending base set money pick that one up instead. its older cheaper and looks better. that said however the gold metal zard is going to be ridiculous in 5 years time.

To me it's really about availability the modern cards are sold everywhere and readily available and not to mention horrible pull rates as for the Vintage Pokemon Cards mainly only available either online or sometimes locally through local game stores And to me it's the same for grading PSA 10 modern cards have a lot different market and will most likely go down as time progresses and more cards are graded then compared to what PSA 10 vintage card market is

There's a saying in the financial investment community - "It's not about timing the market; it's about time in the market." That's why my vote will (generally) go to vintage, because although you can print fewer cards than vintage and make something more rare, vintage will always have the advantage when it comes to age.

Collectibles are not directly comparable to investments. If you’re looking for financial gains, your money is most likely best spent in the stock market rather than on cardboard. You can hold a card for 25 years and it might still barely go up in value

Great video! I primarily collect vintage Japanese. When it comes to modern, I focus on Japanese exlusives (set cards or promos) and some fan favorites that are available in both Japanese and English. It's what I love to collect and also what I think will hold or maybe gain value over time. I'm not in it to try and make money down the line but it is nice feeling like your collection will at the very least hold its value. Of course I can't know for sure but I feel pretty confident about it. I always try to look for cards that come with a "story". I think if there is some sort of story to tell about a card or set, it has potential. A story could be anything really. Anniversary sets, the first version of a card, the last WotC set, the first non-WotC set, banned cards, Japanese exclusive promos etc., the list of "story potential" goes on. My goal with this is to fill a few binders where every page is interesting, odd, and/or unique. For example, I have a few pages filled with vintage Japanese banned cards. Nothing really rare here but a lot of "story". I do agree with Jake that the 25th anniversary Charizard will probably not go up in value for a very long time. Still though, there is a story attached to this card and it is certainly worthy of having one in your collection. A complete 25th anniversary set, which is quite affordable now, will still be easy to sell for a decent amount of money in ten, fifteen, or twenty years. It's probably not going to land you a big profit but it will certainly raise some eyebrows and attract buyers if you ever do sell.

I think if you have some discretionary income, invest in vintage since it's going to continue to keep its value over time. If you're on a budget, modern is a solid investment too. Either way, just collect what you enjoy most and you can't lose!

I'm not that wealthy and I like opening packs, so modern it is! Even collecting sealed I think it's worth it to collect modern, if you're pretty good at sitting on stuff for years without moving it. I've only got two holo vintage cards left-- I might send them for grading-- and if I ever found my missing childhood binder of cards, I might start expanding it.

I mainly just chase pikachu. Other than that, I just collect whatever is affordable and available and crack packs when we can. I keep a few sealed products, but otherwise I don't really think of the investment side of collecting as much as I just want stuff I like in the collection. Who knows what things will be worth in 20 years? Patience is key. Today's modern is tomorrow's vintage. That's the hope, anyways, that when I pass these on to my kids, they'll be worth allot more.

the thing i always tell people is todays cards are tomorrows nostalgia. the reason vintage cards are so expensive is because people are willing to pay so much for them due to their nostalgia and people are refusing to sell them for low prices because of their sentimental value. todays children will have the same nostalgic feeling towards todays sets because unlike any other time in modern Pokémon we just had another Pokémon boom like we had in the 90s. for the first time in a long time im starting to see kids back in the card isle looking for Pokémon and we are seeing parents with kids getting back into this hobby and bringing their kids along for the ride which will increase the nostalgic value since now the cards will have ties to memories with the children's parents.

@@JohnDoe_88 i mean i got out of collecting back at the start of x and y and got back into it now so for me i look at cards that are now considered vintage and looked at as nostalgic despite them being the closest the to modern cards for me other than modern cards. in Pokémon vintage really just means 10 years old so in 10 years modern cards will be considered vintage.

I find myself being attracted to both oddly enough. I enjoy the new alternate arts, I think they can look full of life, depending on the card of course. Vintage cards, however, will always hold a special place in my heart. My friends will whip out their vintage pages in their binders and I’ll stare in awe for minutes. Modern can sometimes be frustrating. It’s fun opening packs but if I get unlucky with a set, that money put into etbs and packs could’ve gone to buying my favorite vintage singles. Of course once I finish my vintage wishlist (gold stars are outta my $ range) I’m really hoping some of these 50-100$+ modern singles crash a bit.
