Great video Sam. I'm a parent of a JS who is now in his phase 2. He always wanted to join the army but we could see how miserable he was doing A levels. He loved and hated Harrogate. What he didn't like was being punished for others mistakes and that weaker more vulnerable recruits were bullied by their peers. A lot of it went further than just character building. The changes we've noticed is the pride he has in himself. He's really tidy, and when he's home on leave he gets up early, showers, makes his own breakfast and uses his own initiative, keeps his bedroom tidy. I would recommend it to any parent who's child wants to join. They can leave really quickly if it isn't them through discharge as of right. He's matured into a respectful young man who seems to be able talk to everyone.

That’s great to hear, I realise that basic can be difficult but at least he is getting through it. I wish him all the best

I think the reason they punish people for others mistakes is cos if it was in war and someone accidentally leaked info about where they are this would lead to the whole section being caught up in it

I believe it is not a good idea to allow early enlistments for many of the exact reasons you mention. In the States, military recruiters are not allowed (by federal law, not just military regs) to talk with kids younger than 17 years old about enlisting. Most US kids do not actually get through the recruiting process before they turn 18, partially because the US military wants recruits with a high school diploma and that generally means you will be 18 before you graduate. Also, US law prohibits military members from serving in a combat zone under the age of 18, so most branches prefer their recruits to be 18 on entry (or at least by the end of boot camp) so as not to have to bother with that detail. I went to boot camp with a 17-year old and he went to Vietnam at 17 due to an admin oversight (our whole unit was sent in one fell swoop from Japan during the 1972 Easter Offensive. One of those "You've got three days to get there and operating." type things the US Marines are famous for). They found out when he came into work one morning (he was in motor transport) and told everyone it was his 18th birthday. The motor T officer overheard that and called the Group S-1 (personnel). He verified his Marine was now 18, but there were a couple of other underaged Marines in the unit. They were sent back to Japan kicking and screaming. My friend, as young as he was, was a mature young man and an excellent Marine. In fact, he was trained and assigned to drive flat-bed semi-trucks carrying large aircraft bombs from the dump to the flight line (we were in an aviation unit). You won't see that in the civilian world. My experience in 21 years between the Marines and the Air National Guard was that most 17-year old entrants were immature and a royal pain in the ass to NCOs (like me). 16-year olds had to be worse (not all I'm sure).

Hello, I’m 16 turning 17 in august, ever since a little kid I’ve wanted to join the army I’ve grew up with soldiers around me, my step dad was in the army for 15 years and has always told me it’s something that will be for me, he says you can travel the world do all stuff you won’t do like parachuting etc.I want to join but I have people close to me saying stuff about me joining, do you have any advice, thanks.

IM in a tough situation i have an apprenticeship in property maintenance that's going very very well and will most likely get a job with them however its been a dream of mine to join the army. But i don't want to just leave my job as they are happy with my work. Is joining the reserves a good option do you think? ( a video on that will be helpful) 2 of the guys at my job including my boss have served in the british army for quite some time , so i could have a chat with them oneday, But yeah i was just wondering about the reserves and your opinion or possibly a futre video on that. I'm guessing that the stats regarding young soldiers and mental health problems is more connected to the individuals background than the age per say. Any thoughts on this?

(I'm Swedish, and we do not have that opportunity here. 99% of recruits are between the ages of 18-20 when they are called up. I was 19½.)

I have a question im curious about since you are an agent of Great Britain especially since you’re a British soldier? Are you still pissed off about George Washington who served as a colonel in the British army declaring independence from the tyrannical British government? I mean I don’t think you can blame him and his followers because Great Britain were taking our guns, taxing us without representation, and treating its 13 colonies like a third world British country. We tried to make neutral petitions to agree but king George wouldn’t have it and got pissed off from our simple nice requests. Also are you still pissed at France, your arch nemeses, for helping and also aiding America in its independent fight? Last but not least is the British army still coming up with a battle scheme to invade America and get its territory back to reclaim the union of Great Britain to get back to its glory days as the most powerful country and most powerful military on the planet?
