Should you keep avocado trees indoors or outdoors?

Hey Scott -- Our tree is 3 years old and we repotted it 2 months ago (in October). I used a mix of slightly acidic potting soil (pH is now about 6.5), perlite for drainage, and compost -- covering it with a thin layer of mulch. We brought inside and since then it has started dying (see photos). I don't think it is root rot -- we are very frugal with watering, and it gets as much sunlight (or rather, daylight) as you can expect in Switzerland in the winter. Our location is near Lake Geneva, so fairly low altitude. My wife and I are your biggest fans here and we really and appreciate your HELP ! Oh no! It’s possible you may be underwatering. I like to have a moisture metre around so I can test the dampness of the soil before watering. If you’re too frugal with watering, you may be underwatering which will cause similar signs as root rot. All the best! I hope your tree improves.

My Avocado's truck is almost entirely brown, it's sturdy but I'm not sure as I've seen many green stemed Cado trees online.

Another thing to consider is critters outdoors. I live in Spokane, Washington, in the Pacific Northwest of USA. The internet says the 'typical' temps here are 26F to 88F (-3 to 31C) though I have personally seen it 0F and 100F (-17 and 37C) so keeping my dozen avocado trees outdoors is not always possible. Recently I decided to take a couple outdoors to enjoy the 70F (21C) days and within 12 hours some squirrels had dug up the seeds, eating most of them and decimating the plants.

Sorry for your loss, but thanks for the information. I was considering putting my young trees outside for the Summer (Massachusetts, USA). I have all kinds of wildlife in my yard ranging from squirrels, rabbits, skunks. Now you mention it, they would view my trees as snacks!

@@allisonmigrants8955 Indeed. And, as you know, squirrels can climb anything, so not sure how you can protect your plants from the scavenging critters. Maybe if the seed is fully decomposed ...

I was considering placing my little trees outside, they’ve been indoor only thus far. So I search on KZbin and found Scott then your post. I didn’t consider animals being an issue , so i thank you very much. I guess I’ll consider a mesh tent like the ones used for raised bed gardens. Honestly, I have sprouted so many avocado seeds I have to stop. I have several trees growing and I’ve gifted other little ones.

The wind is something I didn’t mention in this video! I don’t know about making it grow faster - but being exposed to some wind, and some trunk movement, definitely strengthens the trunk!

I'm in southern Ontario, Canada, so zone 5b, and have a new avocado plant that is living outdoors for the summer. I'll bring it inside once overnight temperatures dip below around 10 degrees C and keep it indoors until daytime temperatures are consistently close to 20 degrees C. So far, so good. Lots of good growth outside on my deck.

on way to speed up the fruiting age of a seedling tree, is to graft a piece of the seedling plant onto a mature plant , the hormones from the mature plant will stimulate the seedling branch to flower sooner . ( this is the opposite of the usual grafting of named variety on to a seedling root stock )

Maybe a weird question. Is it possible to graft an A/B and B/A branch on the same tree so that one part can polinate the other past?

How do you manage to keep the roots in the pots? I have much smaller trees than these in containers that are about the same size and the roots always start coming out the bottom.

I was growing my sapling in a bottle for about 7 months and it is tall and strong now, ( ofc I've been pruning it). Last week it fell down and half of the pit got broken off..will the sapling survive?

Very good video, last year your videos encouraged me to grow an avocado pit for myself and at this present moment it is doing great.
