Hi Scott! I started my avocado tree in water, and once it was doing well and had a lot of roots, I planted it into soil, in a pot that was relatively small, then when I thought it was outgrowing the pot, I replanted it into a pot that was much too big for it... the growth then stopped and all the leaves fell off, then the top started turning black. The stem kept turning black and kept going down the stem, past 3 or 4 leaf nodes. I then realized that it probably wasn't going to make a comeback! I then decided to take the plant out of the dirt, and put it in water once again, thinking that if I took it out of the dirt, and got some oxygen to the roots, (I assumed it had root rot) it might possibly live. It has been a few months now, and a new stem has emerged out of one of the leaf nodes, and it seems to be doing well! I will definitely take this video into consideration when it comes time to plant my avocado into soil once again!

Hi Scott... I'm going thru a root rot problem with my grafted tree in a pot,, i bought 3, one is dead ;; one i just took out the pot today, and repotted it with only garden soil, and the third one is so so, not growing much... what i notice is, my seedlings growing in pots can handle water much better,, i also started 5 year's ago seedling from seed direct into the ground,, it grows like crazy,it stands 1.80m tall and it's more like a bush, side branches all around... i did notice 8 flowers on one branch a few weeks ago, but i look today, only 2 flowers left, 6 fell off... but the tree looks good, big green leaves and the new leaves come out reddish.. the flowers is a good sign, i hope to get more flowers next year... i want to keep it in a bush shape, and keep it about 2meters tall.... hopefully a bush full of avocados in a few year's..Lol.... oh the reason i repotted it with only garden soil is...as i watch yours and many other video's, the conclusion i made was,, potting soil has organic matter in,, and holds on to the water, then rots everything..so i made sure, the garden soil was clear of organic matter.. and i just put a bit compost ontop..

I have about a dozen trees around the house. All are indoors and in pots 4" or 10cm in diameter and 3" or 7cm deep. They all seem to max out in height at 20" or 51cm. Their pots are the self-watering type where one end of a wick is in the soil and the other end is in the water reservoir under the pot. There are always a bunch of roots coming through the drain holes and resting in the water. I reckon it is time to repot to larger pots. :) Still, 20" or 51cm is a pretty good size for a houseplant, so ...

Hi Scott, I love watching your videos. Thank you for sharing. I have a question. My avocado plant are doing okay. But the youngest of the 3 keeps growing. It is winter so he should be asleep. His leaves are lighter and not as dense. Ik keep my avocado plants in a see trew pot and in a plastic bag because of tiny flies. I need to wipe them out. Could you inform me what to do to protect him not to get low on energy. Thank you

I sent you a question with a picture on your Instagram a while back… I had my avocado growing in water for almost a year? And tried trimming it back twice to make it grow more and branch out but it just wasn’t working… The stem was still green, and the leaves almost felt like the outside of an avocado, which was pretty cool, but it was just sort of stunted… I moved it into soil, and since then, it has grown a SECOND TREE out of the same avocado seed… The second tree has now passed the original tree in height and in number of leaves, but the original tree is finally branching and growing new leaves too… The second tree has a stem that’s more of a reddish tone, and the leaves are not as waxy yet… Still soft. Have you ever seen this happen before??

Hi Scott, thanks for all the videos! What would you suggest doing if too large of a pot was used when first planting the avocado in soil from water? It's been about a year and a half in this pot, and it just doesn't seem to be thriving the way it should. Thanks!

I’d wait it out. Repotting and downsizing might be enough to knock an already stressed tree out. Just keep an eye that you’re not overwatering 👌🏻

any tips for a plant parent especially a avocado grower? I have 2 avocado tree that is curling and twisting, I already have perlites with cactus soil mix for well drainage in a terra cotta pot. Any ideas?? I already repotted it twice or 3 times.

how do you feel about putting drainage rock at the bottom of pots then add your soil?
@jewelfinds59 Жыл бұрын
My avocado tree is almost 6 foot tall. Looks like I potted in an appropriate sized pot but it needs more drainage holes and pearlite in the soil. I live in Ohio, USA and brought her in 3 weeks ago. She looks really good right now but hates it indoors. Should I get a humidifier for the winter months? ( my ficus tree hates being inside too)

Hi, two weeks ago I finally planted some of my avocados. Unfortunately, I’ve seen some misleading information on the pots online and I’ve purchased well draining nursing pots but with diameter of 25 cm, and 20 cm height. Now I am scared my avocados roots will rot. Should I get smaller pot and replant them again? If so, should the soil they’re in be thrown out, or can it be reused? Won’t it be too much of a shock for them?

Hey Scott, one of my avocado seedlings has completely paused its growth for about a month now. I’m also Australian, so I’m concerned considering it’s well and truly spring now. Is this normal? Some sources say the take time to focus on root development but it not sure.
@vegardno5 ай бұрын
Yes, avocado trees have about 3-4 growth spurts a year and it supposedly alternates between growing roots and growing shoots. The pauses are definitely normal. As long as leaves are not browning or falling off I think the tree is healthy (or at least not suffering too much).

@@vegardno yep, that definitely sounds right. I’ve got 3 now that I grew from seed and all are doing the same thing. Thanks!
