Thank you for this. I've been shooting film/video for over 40 years. I agree we are accustomed to seeing moving pictures in landscape mode, and for good reason. We have eyes on the side of our face, not on our forehead and chin. The recent trend for portait mode in video is a silly attempt by big tech to tell us how we should see the world. We see the world in landscape. Shoot video in landscape! Save portrait mode for, well, still portraits.

Here's another reason, which applies to recording live action: There will be much less camera (phone) movement to capture the action. Example 1: Members of my old baseball club keep recording moments of the games in portrait. When doing this they have to focus on the batter because with the portrait orientation it's usually not possible to see the pitcher. Then when the batter hits the ball they have to pan across much more to follow the ball which looks clumsy and often misses the action. Also the portrait mode shot shows an awful lot of irrelevant grass between the camera and the player(s) and an awful lot of irrelevant sky. Example 2: A local pub was showing on Facebook the band that was playing. Then they'd pan across to the customers dancing. Then back to the band. Then back to the dancers. Had they held the phone landscape style they'd have been able to show both groups at the same time (and induced less nausea in the viewer!) So, yeah, landscape every time!

This exact point has always irritated me, especially on news items and the tv company use footage from mobile phones. Doesn't anyone realise that the picture will fill the whole screen instead of a little strip with extra faded bits to make up the whole screen. Your example is (at around 2:00) is not typical. The view is usually much thinner. Thanks for posting though, let's hope everyone will take your advice.

Besides from the fact that portrait mode is wasting a significant amount of screen space, I find it highly discomforting to view. It simply is not natural. Thus, I find it strange that these vertical video videographers can review their recordings and not feel uncomfortable watching them to the point that they then realize they should be recording video in landscape mode!

I think the fact that the whole pitch of making phones in a default portrait mode, is that originally you would/could not take photos or videos, so it makes sense that the user would naturally use/hold the handset vertically, (to dial, then speak) and that hasn't changed. It's only a theory. During this lockdown period, I have seen a lot of phone videos used on tv news etc. And I'm continuously shouting at the tv "turn the phone around!" Unfortunately, they can't hear me.

I just started shooting phone videos for TikTok. I heard that Tiktok only allows portrait mode, so that's what I've been doing. Is that not correct? I would so prefer to shoot in landscape! Thanks for the info. :)

I don't really watch television anymore, but if you inform me of which companies, and specifically which of their products are being advertised in this manner, I'll contact the companies to inform them that I am boycotting their product(s) because their choice of advertising is normalizing, and perpetuating a practice which serves absolutely no positive contribution to humanity, only negative and therefore, should not be acceptable. Further, the brainwashing and/or psychological conditioning of humanity to accept what should not otherwise be acceptable is, unto itself, unacceptable!!! If it really annoys you, take three minutes to send the company a message. You don't have to write an essay, just tell them you can no longer support a company which normalizes (whatever the case may be: in this example, portrait video recording), and therefore, you will no longer purchase their product. No need to explain yourself, or why you feel that the issue is important . . . just mention what it is you don't like (their use of portrait mode video in their advertising campaign), and that you will no longer purchase their product (name of product, good, or service). That's it. Or if you have the time, and the desire, provide a 10,000 word essay why you will be boycotting them where you can explain everything in great detail.

I don't know about you guys but my TV goes from side to side. How many times have you seen morning TV news with a vertical video clip, looks dumb. If it's a crime in progress capture maybe more would be revealed if it was shoot in 16:9, just saying.

Hi Arif! You are talking about the settings on your camera. It will totally depend on what camera you are shooting on, and what settings are associated with Portrait, Neutral and Landscape settings. What I'm talking about is the way or direction to HOLD your smartphone. Good Luck with your documentary film!!

Hi Joel, are you having any success now? Make sure you don't have your phone orientation locked, make sure your screen zoom is set to standard, and make sure you start the Live in Landscape mode (as in make sure your phone is facing the right way before you hit go). That last point is a big one as it is telling KZbin which way you want to go live! I'm not a Samsung user so I'm not able to tell you where to change your zoom and orientation settings, but I'm sure a quick Google search may help you... hope that helps!

Hi Anastasia Macdonald! This has happened to me and several of my clients, and it happens on any camera when you can see what the camera is recording. Luckily, it is super easy to fix! Make sure you are looking straight down the lens, rather than watching yourself on the screen. Very tempting to do, and it may take a few practice rounds to avoid your eyes flicking back to check your self out! I know the lens is small on your device, and seems to be to the side of the camera, but if you just stare at that little dot, your eyes will look centre when you play back your video. I would love to see your video when you publish it! Good luck!

You are probably hitting record before placing the phone into landscape mode. Many cameras take a second or two to adjust. That, or your phones' setting are locked into portrait mode only.

Bah... tik tok and you tube proves this wrong. Content changes but more and more people use portrait to film. For ads TV or informational content portrait may be better. This is dated. Use your head. What is more professional is whether the content works not following a status quo.

Yes, she missed the main point. It’s not about conditioning; it’s about our morphology. Our field of view is naturally horizontal, because our eyes are side by side, not stacked one on top of the other.
