Intermittent fasting is nothing new. Humans have been fasting for centuries, whether it be therapeutically, for religious reasons, or during periods of food scarcity.
But recently, it has been gaining more and more popularity, and an increasing number of people rely on intermittent fasting to manage their weight, regulate their blood sugar levels, gain muscle mass, improve their health, etc.
But is intermittent fasting actually good for you? What are its benefits? Does it have any downsides?
WHAT IS INTERMITTENT FASTING?
Intermittent fasting is a practice that involves eating during specific periods of time, thus going for extended periods without eating. In most cases, food options and calories aren’t restricted, but can only be consumed within a defined time-frame.
There are many different ways to practice intermittent fasting, and I talk about the most popular ones in this video.
I also discuss the benefits and downsides of intermittent fasting, talk about intermittent fasting for weight loss, and address the negative side effects of intermittent fasting.

I tried IF for a while. Although I was never diagnosed with eating disorder, I was always having issues with food. IF totally triggered all of those old mind patterns. But mainstream don;t address the psychology with the physical body. They use IF as if it is the golden method to treat all problems.

The reason why intermittent fasting helps with weight loss is due to the fact that you keep insulin low and glucagon levels high, less about calories. Weight loss is very little to do with calories, more to do with hormones and the level of systemic inflammation.

I love the fact that you address Intermittent Fasting (IF) and eating disorders. I'm in remission for an eating disorder and I have had mixed results with IF. Sometimes I can do it without obsession (rarely) and sometimes it feels super restrictive and I obsess about food (most of the time). Thus, I can completely understand why the results are mixed in research! I'm exploring intuitive eating slowly, mixed with the ideas from French Women Don't Get Fat (FWDGF). FWDGF seems to be the only framework that doesn't spike my food obsession and guides me to look at healthy food and preparation. I'm really loving learning how to intuitively eat and combine it with what I've learned from FWDGF. Your videos are wonderful and so helpful to me!

great video! i actually do intermittent fasting, but without wanting to; i usually eat between 9-18, but that’s just because that’s what my body wants ; i listen to it and if i ever get hungry before 9 or after 18, or I have to go to a party or anything I will eat whenever, but my message is that everyone should eat when they’re hungry and if that matches with intermittent fasting great but it doesn’t have to work for everyone

I have a history of ED such as anorexia and bulimia and I also have PCOS which means I don’t get satisfied with small meals (probably too many insulin spikes) and I refuse to cut out carbs. What I do instead is eat 3 larger meals through out the day and I avoid snacking. It’s simple but so much more effective and I do mild intermittent fasting for 12-14 hours. Nothing drastic.

I have the exact same experience. I unconsciously eat from around 8 or 9 AM to around 5 or 6 PM for that very reason. Mini meals never work out for me, and they're always slightly triggering because I still feel hungry after them, but having 2-3 big meals always makes me feel better.

I just started 16:8 IF - on week 2 - it's actually made me obsess LESS over food because my appetite has decreased and I snack less! I always had a tendency to eat dinners too late or snack between 10 p.m and midnight. It also forces me to drink more water during the times I am not eating which I never did enough before. t was hard adjusting the first few days but it's been beneficial for me. :)

i personally love fasting but i do it without a strict schedule. i find that only restricting yourself to eating from certain times can feel over restrictive and over complicated. i tend to eat dinner with my family and then fast until I actual feel hunger the next day which is usually around 1pm. it helps me to be more mindful of what i’m eating and i don’t eat out of boredom anymore.

I really like how I feel when I do fast, however I always get miserable when I attempt IF long term - I'm a breakfast lover! Also, I like to have a late evening meal with my partner.. So instead, I do a 24hr fast once or twice a week (usually before the weekend). I definitely still feel the benefits as it's an extended fast but it's not part of my usual routine so it doesn't feel like I'm restricting too much. Just trying to listen to my body and what it wants :-) Thank you for the video and lots of love from the UK xx

It helped me so much with my PCOS especially to loose weight and fight against insulin resistance so i eat the way i like but my body has some paterns like i crave more fruits than chocolate usually unless on a certain period of my cycle. I have been doing IF for 2 years now and it really helped! Before i used to push myself to at least have a breakfast but i would end up nautious and bloated! And since i don't like late dinners IF works well! Your video was very accurate and objective! I loved it thank you cor your work!

Exactly I was hoping you would say that. It’s another set of food rules. I feel like it’s hard on the adrenals. Also I am not able to eat large amounts in one sitting so pressuring myself to get it all in within a certain time frame.👎🏽I do better with many small meals. I get dizzy and super low energy without food for long periods of time. I’ll even have a hypoglycemic attack worst case. That’s me though.

I think intermittent fasting can be beneficial but not for long term. Just enough to lose the weight you need and then when you want to maintain, to spread the meals out with the same calories or slowly increase calorie intake. That way you can still lose weight if that’s the easiest way for you cause the main thing is you want to be is healthy. So starting off this way can reduce appetite so you can train your body to not overeat when you spread your meals out

Thank you for your video! I was hoping you’d provide us with your take on IF. I 100% agree with you. Right now if anyone researched IF you’re going to hear so many doctors, trainers and people who have tried it sort of pressuring you to do IF like it’s the golden rule for eating right in order to be healthy and lose weight which is completely false. Like you just said this is another calorie restrictive diet. My issue with IF is that there is a psychological disconnect with food as you said. If people are not properly informed this can become very dangerous method to losing weight because it can open for some negative triggers and obsessions. I personally have mixed feelings about it and I don’t think it’d work for me because I do not like to feel pressured or restricted. I think your approach to listening to your hunger cues and following a healthy balanced diet is a much better method to losing weight and having healthier relationship with food. I just feel like intuitive eating is a much more realistic approach for many to follow than obsessing over restrictions. Thanks again for your informative videos! I hope you’re doing well!
