Air quality engineer here (yup, we exist): 1: This instrument is probably crap. Using this kind of instrument is like saying "it's between 0 and 50". A real instrument (used by France or the US EPA) is roughly the size of a small fridge and costs between 20-40k $. A state of the art one costs 400k $. They also take dayyys to calibrate and get working, need stable conditions, etc... 2: Yes, there's no way the PM2.5 was at 5 µg/m3 near that highway 3: BUT the most important thing, you guys measured the "instant" concentration. You pulled the instrument out and measured. But PM10 or PM2.5 are measured on year or day average. Let's say your instrument is decent, you'd have to let it run for at least a day (outside or in the office) without moving it and in stable conditions and see what the daily average is. The World Health Organization recommends that PM2.5 doesn't exceed 10 µg/m3... on a year average (25 µg/m3 daily average). 4: Nico, you're right, LA's air right now is probably way better than it was a few decades ago. You're also right about the instrument being a particle reader and ignoring all the rest. 5: Sam, what you're smelling is mostly gases (from car exhausts) so yeah, technically the instrument reading particles could say "hey, the air is fine" but your nose can smell all the gases the instrument can not read. That being said, gases and particles are often emitted together (in combustion engines for instance). I'm french and, in school, we often used LA as a bad example: you got a massive city, spreading across a huge surface, with shit public transport, in a hot environment (almost a desert), with mountains all around you blocking the air flow. Not sure who's in charge of measuring the air quality in each state but I would "blindly" trust any decent organization measuring it in the US (EPA, universities, labs). As far as I know, your government doesn't interfere with this, no matter who's in charge (Obama, Trump). It's just guys like you and me doing their jobs. Locking yourself up in a confined space is the worst you can do. Inside air quality if often worse than outside because of poor air recycling, although the pollutants aren't the same. What you could get is a CO2 analyzer (cheap and reliable) and put it your back office. Because CO2 is "harmless" but does cause headaches, sleepiness and loss of focusing abilities. Sorry for poor english, I'm French!

While I agree with most of your assesment. They're still mostly right in the video. Go look up any air quality map online from government organizations. You guys need to measure when you're 3D printing. A recent study just showed that they release a bunch of ultrafine particles (UFP) and volatile organic chemicals (VOC). Those things are carcinogens, in the studio you should be fine because there's a lot of volume but it's bad when you stand next to the printer. PLA is the best and ABS is the worst. Everyone who has a printer needs to know it's better not to hang around a printer when it's printing
@TheMistyBlueLounge5 жыл бұрын
Good to know! This might be off topic, but kind of related... I worked in a printing press facility for a time doing renovations as an electrician, and it was unbelievable how much ink was in the rafters of the ceiling. The whole building was covered in a very fine layer of black dust that was in fact ink... I had nose bleeds and dryness/soreness in my sinuses for about 2 years after working there, and I only worked there for about 3 months (but was inches away from that dust most of the time)! Nasty stuff, I don't doubt that a 3D printer is releasing a lot of particles of a similar nature, just that most people wouldn't even notice since the scale is usually much smaller.
@thealxder5 жыл бұрын
@@TheMistyBlueLounge in the report they compared the amount to regular printers and I think those actually have more fine particles. Although less VOCs which are the dangerous ones but I'm not sure about the actual numbers for regular printers. But that sounds pretty bad, they obviously have some irritants in them

77 degrees is optimal ... for sweating your ass off! 70 or less here, and 66-68 is actually optimal for sleeping.

When the Northern California Camp fire was going strong where I am the air quality was rated #1 worse in the world. Had throat problems for 2 months afterwards. Glad I don't work for Cal Fire anymore. Honestly your readings are far from bad. I wouldn't worry about it at all.

You talked about the backroom having no ventilation and being smaller, but the way that will matter most is CO2 concentration. Also, judging from the difference between inside and outside, I think you have disproved the hypothesis that particulate pollution is an indicator of chemical pollution. I would love to see you try it with a few different chemical readings!

Your A/C is a mini split system which is a ductless sustem. Really it's reusing the air in the room already and chilling it. What you should consider is a UV Light, but you would need an air duct system to have an actual effect. Most UV Lights are cheap but don't last as long. The more expensive UV Lights last longer and have a better warranty. I recommend Respicaire. If your consider following this clean air plan. Good luck fellas!

I just checked the global map on aqicn.org which shows the PM10 measurement, and it looks like you currently have the 2nd worst in the world, at 257. The only place worse is Mus, Turkey which is an astounding 434. The data updates throughout the day, so it can change hour by hour.
@IshwarSoni_inos5 жыл бұрын
@@chrisedwards3866 Check this data in January when it's winter (or you can check same website for historical data for months November to January), right now its summer, and because of extensive heat, pollution particles get heated, climb up in environment and get dispersed, also it's raining which will dissolve pollution particles, but when its winter, neither pollution particles get heated nor there is rain to dissolve them, that time it becomes gas chamber
