apple upgrade program is a trade in because they are giving you back the 12 months of payments you still owe, and putting you on a new 24 month plan, so you never pay off a phone, but pay half and get half of the value as a trade in each year. If you did this with the 13 and 14, it would be $39/month with Apple care for 12 months, or $329 net of trade in to buy the iPhone 14, or $27 per month. So they are relatively equal if you value apple care+ at $12/month. But I agree it forces you to get apple care, but 0% interest is now worth something for sure.

This is a really good point. At this time Apple‘s offering $600 for a trade-in on an iPhone 13 Pro. I’m not sure what the cost was as they don’t seem to care on the gigabyte size but that seems like it’s less than half the value of the original phone, especially if it’s a larger GB model. I do agree it doesn’t make sense to keep devices for more than three years as they lose their value. However I think if you were to do the upgrade program every year you probably pay as much as the other plans and not be stuck with a three-year contract. For me a three-year term is too long for a device. Hopefully carriers start doing two year contracts instead.

When thinking about INSURANCE, I'm reminded of a comment made by an economics teacher I once had. He said, "Only insure what you cannot afford to lose". I'm with you on NOT buying those extended service plans because losing something like a $1000 phone is going to sting BUT it isn't going to put you and your family out on the street. A major medical event will, for most of us, cause financial ruin so carry insurance for that.

Just my experience in upgrading from Iphone 11 to Iphone 14 Plus with 256Gb of storage today. My iphone 11 was taken for $700 towards an iphone. The Iphone 14 Plus with 256Gb cost me $200 after trade in. All I did was pay the taxes today at the store and they put me on a 36 month payment plan for the $200. its about $5 a month added to my bill. I asked if there was any way I could just pay the phone in cash or half of it at the store. They said I could only do it the 36 months finance way.

I have an 11 Pro Max with 256 memory and just went for the AT&T deal. One requirement is that you have an unlimited data plan which we upgraded to 6 months ago. Anyone who does NOT have or need an unlimited plan will have to figure on that extra cost when making the decision...

How much hassle do you want to deal with is the question? I've done that in the past - buying a phone to trade in. I'm kind of over finagling too much just to save another $100 or two. If you're ready to upgrade, I'd just trade the 12 and be done. Easy and simple.

Xfinity Mobile is offering iPhone 14 with a $400 discount. I locks you into a 24 month plan. I purchased a iPhone 14 Pro and it's $25/mo for 24 months = $600. Pay tax upfront and that's it. I'm replacing my 6s !!! Oh, forgot the case... another $29 for a Spigen case.

In order to get the $1,000 level trade in value, you have to trade in to an installment plan, otherwise you would get less. My 13 Pro Max, for example, trades in for cash value at $700 - $720 for a full price phone purchase, but it trades in for $1,000 against an installment deal.

@@Techthusiasm Also do you think it is worth trading in to Apple when you have a bigger storage 512GB, 1TB iPhone 13 Pro which originally cost more. As you are still getting the same trade in value as a 128GB entry model. Losing almost more than 50% value with 512GB, 1TB iPhone. What's the best way to get maximum trade in value for a higher storage iPhone?

For higher storage, I think you're stuck having to sell outright. It's kind of crazy that they determine trade in value with no consideration to storage, yet they charge so much for storage. It's nuts. That's a big reason to just always buy the smallest storage model (assuming you don't need more).

When I was quoting straight trade in values, I was using the amounts quoted by Apple right in the Apple Store page. If you build up a phone, you can see the trade in value for many generations of devices right there.

Hi! I want to ask, i just bought 13 pro in july, I took 2x installments. I already paid 50%, if i I trade in my Iphone 13 pro for a regular iphone 14 now, do i have to complete the remaining 50% of the payment before i can exchange my 13 pro for another iphone? Thank you in advance :)

Depends on the carrier and your installment deal. I would assume, yes, to trade the phone in you will have to pay it off entirely, but not if you have a program like AT&T Next Up or others, so I can't fully advise you.

The only year I’m sticking with my 13 pro max, I see no real upgrades on the 14 pro max. Slight improvements in rear cameras, new front camera, crash detection, action mode and pill hole that’s it. Apple really needs to increase data transfer speeds on the pro models at least, 480 mb/s on lighting ain’t cutting it. At least get USB 3/4 speeds on lighting, could care less about USB C.

@@Techthusiasm I don’t mind lighting or USB C, either way is fine as long as I get faster data transfer speeds when syncing with my mac, transferring lossless media be it music or videos over USB 2 speeds is unacceptable. Specially when Apple pushes pro res and ProRaw so hard as selling points.

@@Forginswagger both 1st and 2nd gen IPads pro have USB 3 speeds on lighting ports. It’s already here just not implemented yet on iPhones.
