Back in the 90's I knew a mechanic in B.C. whose parents went on holidays one winter to San Diego. His Dad was leaning on the front of his car having a smoke waiting for Mom to come out of the stores when some local walking by notices the block heater cord hanging from the grill. The guy stops and stares for a few seconds then asks if the car was an electric car. Dad explains the cord is for the block heater which heats the engine in the winter so the engine will start. The guy considers this for a few more seconds then replies "naw, there's nowhere it gets that cold that a car won't start".

All good points. To some extent it depends on where one is moving snow. I have limited "push to" space so being able to lift the snow up and over the fence is a plus for using the bucket. I do have edge tamers and yes they do leave some snow but I would guess no more than the pads on a blade or the skids on a pusher.

Best combo for moving snow: Deere 5300, oversized bucket, and a 10' rear blade. I can plow snow quicker with that combo than what our city can do with a 6135E and a pusher. And where I may move snow 4 times per year, I can't justify a snow pusher. A bucket works just fine and it peels ice better than anything else I have seen.

There's a lot of variables at play including what surface your plowing, if you even care about protecting the surface you're plowing, if you have a replaceable edge to prevent wear on your bucket, operator experience, and if you only move snow 4 times a year then who cares anyways. The skid shoes are very good on gravel. The area I live in has anywhere from a couple of feet to as much as five feet of snow a year and if I just plowed or pushed the snow I’d soon run out of room and end up building piles of snow. The shoes have, so far, prevented serious damage to the gravel. I like your presentations so please keep up the good, informative work.

I'm a bucket kind of guy! By doing this I find I'm getting very good at using it. I feel you didn't give any major reasons not too but great info to know what to look for.. Thanks! Using the bucket for snow tip the front edge up a bit! Another benefit is putting the snow where you want it and stack it up. With a pusher you need alot of room to push it to. Bucket with back blade to clean up the left over. Open cab 10° winds 10 to 25. Another fun day!

A few years ago I watched the snow peel off to both sides one on to the clean side and the other to the dirty side. Back and forth again and again, frustrated that I was cleaning again and again. How can I make money this way! As I worked I came up with a plan, a simple piece of plywood, 2 ft x 4ft bolted to the side of the bucket. 10 yrs later I'm still using that plywood. Useing it on one side of my 4ft bucket I rarely have to make multiple passes. Sure the cutting edge has gone now but a new bucket was only $400. And I welded 1 inch steel bars in the old bucket sticking out 1 foot, it's become my general use tool, I can dig like a fork, pick up brush, and barkmulch is a breeze, loading my mill with logs, I could go on forever. My old plow truck died and I tried using my JD with bucket on the snow....indeed cumbersome on an 800' driveway, but you gave me an idea: fasten a couple of wood planks across the front of the bucket at an angle. Pour a little used motor oil on the wood. I own a sawmill.

Buckets are very useful for clearing out short and narrow driveways, where I live (in sweden) we just use retired tractors (mainly volvo bm 261's) where entire driveways are cleared out in a single run and then avoiding giant snow dumps on peoples small yards. For any actual stretches of road a blower or plow is of course way more effective at the job, which is why those are used there.

A lot of good points in this short video but I push all my snow with a bucket on my little BX. I was not able to get a quick attach system when I bought my 2020 tractor because everyone was sold out during this crazy Covid year. I have one ordered on back order till sometime in late spring. I have a gravel drive so I purchased those R2 Manufacturing edge tamers and they work flawlessly to keep my gravel in my drive and also prevent the sod from being destroyed when pushing snow onto the back yard. The amount of snow one can keep pushing with edge tamers will amaze you because the bucket never digs into the ground. I do want a snow pusher once I get my quick attach but for now I'm happy with what I have and it's fun. Thanks

The good thing about a bucket is that you can dump the snow in a big pile where you want it. With a blade or a pusher you are much more limited. Buckets also handles really huge snowfalls. But for the most part they are indeed cumbersome.

Really helpful, Courtney. Thanks! With my previous tractor, I moved snow in an even dumber way. Didn't have a loader for my JD970-but I did have a heavy duty 5' Bush Hog brand box blade. So it was reverse all the way, baby! That'd be intolerable now I'm 65. But I gotta say, it got the job done. Now I am stressing out about using the front blade on my new B2601. The horrors of digging in, I got old asphalt and gravel. I vaguely remember being worried about the box blade tho. And I got pretty good with it. We had a massive uphill gravel drive and big farmyard. I didn't gouge, and I moved relatively little gravel into the grass. So here's hoping I can still learn. Like the rest of life, you use the tools you have, until you can buy something better to get the job done, with less hassle. A reversable rear blade works better than a box blade. A tractor mounted blower is better than a walk behind. A snow pusher will work much faster than a loader bucket for scraping a paved driveway area. As an ex city kid, i had a snow shovel for light fluffy deep snow that you had to dig through. I had a snow pusher shovel for 6 inches or less that hadnt been packed down on the sidewalk. I had a long handled sand shovel for the steps, trim work, moving piles, and scraping lightly packed down snow on the sidewalk. I had an ice scraper and an old short handle sand shovel for the heavy hard pack and ice. The last 2 had to get a new edge after every use. The major difference now is the number of digits before the decimal point in the price of the better tool/attachment, to get the job done. If I won the lottery, Id probably hire someone to do it for me. Until then, a tractor, loader, edge guides to prevent gouging the gravel drive before it freezes, and a reversible rear blade are miles better than a 4 hour job with a walk behind snow blower after every lake effect snow storm.

Box blade plus bucket works great for me... Box blade works about the same as a snow pusher driving forwards... The rear blade is super useful going in reverse espically with a slight offset.

I use my bucket with that UHMW edge. Not sure my driveway is even long enough to justify a pusher box. Also I have an older house with a stone foundation, the spring melt brings water down there. Using the bucket to move the snow away from the house works great.

I have an 1/8th mile steep and twisty gravel drive with a large 40x40 concrete apron in front of my garage. Ive used plows, blowers and my 6’ bucket for snow removal over the years. I actually find the bucket to be the ideal tool for the job. Plows push gravel into the lawn and thats a major headache in the spring with a drive this long, not to mention the cost of replacing the gravel more often. Blowers like to throw gravel which is also problematic and dangerous. With the bucket I can float it and control the cutting edge tilt to not scrape right down to the gravel and leave it in place. Buckets also can be used to back drag snow out of tight spots like up against a garage door, and most importantly let you stack the snow neatly where you want it. Have thought about a pusher but not being able to pile the snow would be a no-go for me. May add a uhmw cutting edge to protect the new concrete, but other than that the plain old bucket is perfect.

I use Edge Tamers and a box blade on my 600’ driveway with turn around and parking deck. I’ve tried my rear blade with shoes, but the angle to plow makes it less effective than the box blade. I have/use float mode in front and top and tilt hydraulics in back to fine tune how the BB cuts the snow on a pass. I like the versatility of being able to pick up the snow and dump over my fences or pile at convenient places. The front bucket works much like a snow pusher/plow on the long stretches. I use a Kubota MX6000 HSTC on my farm and empathize with you on some of your property management challenges.

I drilled my 1025R bucket and use a 3/4" thick X 4" wide strip of UHMW along the bucket edge. I countersunk the holes on the UHMW and used stainless steel tapered cap bolts.

I have a snowblower on the PTO. But I really like the bucket to back-drag when there's only 3" or less on the ground. I have a gravel drive too so the bucket backdrag trick is great when the ground isn't frozen yet and there's too little snow on the ground for the blower to be that helpful.

I use a snow bucket on the front my tractor because I got a lot of driveway and only a small area to put the snow so with a bucket I can scoop and dump where I want. A blade is good for small amounts of snow but if we get over 4 ins I need to stack it.

At times if I get caught flatfooted with an unexepcted early storm I use the bucket (and skid shoes). But generally speaking when winter comes I go to the pusher and then the blower. Then reverse as winter ramps down. Good video as always! Happy New Year!

Don't use any of that oily spray stuff in your bucket just paint your bucket with a graphite based paint it dark gray colored and works great for keeping the snow from sticking in your bucket

To protect my blacktop, I used a ratchet rake snow edge on my bucket last year, it worked good for what it was. This year, I welded my old craftsman gt plow onto a ssqi plate to use with my massey tractor. Now just waiting on snow to try it out for the first time.

One good use I've found for using buckets for snow removal is when you need to remove a large snow pile. You can't push a giant 7' drift anywhere with a 35HP compact tractor - blade, box or otherwise. Especially when the snow is wet and heavy. But you can pick it apart a bucket at a time. Blades and such are good for mostly flat surfaces with maybe 1'-2' of snow.

Had to do that last year after my snow blower gave up the ghost.. It works, but it's not the best idea as it took several passes to clean up the spill-over on the sides. You can prevent the dig down if you tip the bucket back slightly. No matter what, I would only use it as a last resort.

When I had a larger tractor, kubota L, and didn’t have better options, I got by with just bucket on gravel driveway. I would back drag 6” or less. 2 ft storms, I would scoop and dump on a diagonal. Not ideal but would work for any size storm. That said, my thrower on my 1025r is way better at efficiency and neatness.

At 4:30 MSI, a company in Michigan (I think) makes a 60" snow bucket for the 1025 or other models. It scoops a wider path and will also work on other LIGHT WEIGHT materials.

I've used a bucket to remove snow for about 15 years now. I also run a cat loader with a snow pusher to clear a mall parking lot. The pusher is good for large surfaces but without much space to put the snow I still have to reattach the bucket to mound it. As far as bucket wear goes, that's boarder line myth. Same tractor, 15 years and each edge is square with eachother. Now I will say that a plow has its advantages in the sense that if you have a long drive you can angle it and let the snow roll out the side

The way I use my tractor is when the plower makes a few large snow mounds in places that are not desired or ready to block doorway entrances. I use my tractor to move these big snow mounds to a more desired location. It's very good for that use.

If you have lots of tasks for the loader and mower, then it's really important to remove the mower so it isn't damaged when doing loader work or even three point work. The easier the deck is to take off and put on means the more likely it is that you actually do it. Lots of folks don't take off the Kubota decks because they aren't that easy.

The only thing with my set-up (used B2100 just purchased in the summer) is this ... it has an older "rear-mount" finish mower on it that, when kept in the full upright position, just adds good ballast. Also, the tractor with my use is already on a plowed driveway (not trudging through snow) and then just approaching the mounds from this plowed side. Many thanks for your share and thoughts.

I tried using my bucket as I didn't have a snow pusher in my budget this year. Even though I was careful, I made a few gouge marks on my nice concrete driveway. Needless to say I will not be using the bucket anymore this winter. I will save up for a snow pusher for next year. I'm only about an hour from Kazoo so I can drive up and save on shipping.

Edge Tamers, bucket level indicator, and float mode would help prevent gouges. I realize not all tractors can have a level indicator or has float mode, but those help prevent gouging, picking up gravel, or catching the edge.

I use my 2025r bucket with edge tamers to plow my 200 yard gravel driveway. The snow drifts are packed so tightly where I live that it's really difficult for me to use anything that only pushes the snow, even with my tires filled and a rear ballast box. I'll likely get a rear mount snowblower in a couple years though since my neighbors have had good luck with them... pricey though! I used your GWT discount code for my edge tamers BTW ;). Depends on how the bucket is used. I would use my bucket to pull snow away from the garage doors, and then turned around to use the 3 pt blade to move the snow to one side of the driveway.

I saw a video from another channel, where this guy coated his bucket, and other accessories, with a ceramic coating so material would slide out easily. There are products on the market to coat your tools/bucket with to make loads not stick. Sorry I don't have that info to pass along.

On average we deal with lots of snow and usually heavy wet with layers of ice in between. Most of us farmers talk about this every year the plow and snow box and bucket and all of us usually have 1 of each and we all find the plows and snow boxes sitting in our equipment shed or in our equipment rows outside not being used because tractor want push them when we get storms we tend to use our bucket snd do the stack and pile roll that is where you push with the bucket as far as you can and then lift bucket dump it in pile and then take the whole pile and do the same thing till we are cleared out. In our area plows and snow boxes seem to be a dime a dozen and cheap because they do not work and all the dealers are crooks and always selling people plows and snow boxes that are way to big for their tractors and they tend to get tossed for the bucket. Our pay loader came out of lower NY state it was used as a parking lot machine 30ft snow box on it probably pushed fine down there where a foot storm is big but up where we are completely useless. Each area is different some place plows and boxes work great other areas bucket is king and we all use bolt on cutting edges that we all run diamond pattern beads of hardfacing on the bottom and beads of hardfacing on the cutting face and they seem to last.

A pusher or blade are only good for pushing, a bucket can be tipped and used to back drag snow. I have a Piranha edge on my bucket that works great and doesn't wear out like the bucket edge and is a much cheaper option compared to a plow or pusher blade.

I've done several videos backdragging at my house. I don't live at my shop, I actually have a regular house too believe it or not, haha! Point being, I sell to 99% home owners and don't ever assume they have a big shop and parking area. A pusher will collect and stack whatever snow you want just as high as a bucket. You just simply push where you want and climb it on up as you stack. You can't stack any higher with a bucket as you're still limited by your loaders max reach height. A backdrag on a snow pusher completely traps the snow within the footprint of the box (HLA pushers anyways) and leave virtually no windrow compared to a bucket.

The only way to pile up snow and not make a pile wider is a bucket to lift it up. The piles you see in parking lots don’t happen because of blades or pushers. It a bucket.

I wish I could put other attachments on my FEL. I have an older style JD quick connect with a 6’ materials bucket and a 6’ rock bucket so I can switch between those two but I can’t find anyone that makes any other attachments ie. Grapples, snow pushers, pallet forks etc. for that type of hook up any more. Are you aware of anyone that sells quick connects for those older style JD quick connect FELs? My FEL is JD 245

I made the mistake of thinking my bucket and a back blade would be good enough .... until I got your snow blade. But since I'm new to this, I'm not getting the most out of my blade. Could you do a quick video for us newbies on setting up and using the blade? Mine keeps running in the "tripped" mode the entire time, even with the feet set at the lowest setting and the loader curled back all the way and in float.

Adjust that nut on the springs and you can stiffen or soften the tension. This should make a difference with the amount of resistance to trip the edge.

Depends on how much snow you are doing!!! For years and years all guys had were snow buckets!!! They work fine to move snow, if your in the custom snow removal then other options, may make sense, but it would take a lot of customers to make it pay?????

It wouldn't. I have the same issue. By late January I need to be able to scoop, lift, carry then dump snow in other locations because the piles become too tall and heavy to push. A snow pusher would not work in my yard. A friend of mine asked to use my loader last year for his customers because he had nowhere else to plow the snow.

I think using your loader bucket to remove snow is the worst thing you could do, you can't roll the snow like you can with a plow blade also there is a squage you can put on the bottom of the snow blade which works perfect for removing snow just order one and then you can move some snow.

I totally disagree. I plow with my bucket without issue. Just need to use the float position and keep edge 1" off the driveway(gravel). Snow is easily removed with proper RPMs.

So you are trapping snow between the small space on the bottom side of your bucket and the ground or just packing a nice thin later of snow onto the ground? Then there's all the folks that have paved or concrete drives that want rubber or poly edges to avoid gouges, stains, etc from the steel. Like I say, it works, but it wasn't made for it.
