Kenny Smith is articulate and classy, much like his late former coach. The story he shared epitomizes the life Dean Smith led. Coach Smith believed that others were more important than himself and were to be treated with dignity, respect and compassion. One of the first examples of this I discovered was that Coach Smith always referred to one of his first prized recruits/players as "Charles", his preference, though most everyone called him "Charlie". Dean Smith reached out to commoners, too. As a freshman at UNC-CH, I jogged down the sidewalk through South Campus regularly. One afternoon, I was startled when a white Lincoln Town Car slowed dramatically as it pulled up beside me. Not wearing my glasses, I could only make out someone in the driver's seat waving dramatically. I smiled and waved back, pleased with the gesture. Days later, the same thing happened but I leaned over and looked more intently. Sure enough, Dean Smith was smiling and waving broadly at me. The same thing occurred a couple more times that semester, highlights in a rather bad period, personally. Anyway, like many North Carolinians, I knew Coach Smith as a basketball coach until that experience. Thankfully, I took the time to learn as much as I could about the man, and discovered what I shared above. He became a mentor from afar.

Sorry, but as a Duke fan I can’t help but see the irony when Kenny said he didn’t go to Duke in 83 because the talent wasn’t good enough. Yes, 83 was a tough year for Duke since it’s stars were just freshmen . But that same team came within a whisker-and a super-human performance by Pervis Ellison, of winning it all in 86. Kenny could’ve been that extra ooomph in the 86 NCAA championship game to get Duke over that whisker-and he could’ve been on a NCAA championship team, something that eluded him at UNC. Anybody else catch that?
