@@christopherr7195 You must've missed the part where they said it was japanese Cypress. The Western worlds problem is that sawmills get more money out of bad cuts as very few people demand certain qualities or even know what to look for. So trees are fertilized and cut for max volume and very little regard for rings, fibre and reaction wood.

I'm unimpressed. I see some boards with huge knots, some with reaction wood, and some with plugged defects. Greetings from Japan's western cousin, Norway.

With all the videos of people butchering things online, It is a privilege and pleasure to watch a master at work. There is a real beauty in neat, efficient work and design, and It comes across beautifully in the video. I made the same noise when he fit that floorboard around the beam so perfectly. That is the greatest feeling in carpentry!

This is to be seen only in Japan and nowhere else on earth. This country consistently amazes me with their craftsmanship in producing anything they choose to and make the rest of us look like we're still discovering fire. The framing of this house is built to the tolerances of custom furniture in the west. Their dedication to their craft and respect for their work should at least humble and hopefully inspire the rest of us. This is unbelievable.

I worked with some traditional Japanese carpenters in Japan. One day I was nailing up some siding when the head carpenter came over and said, "Hey, you're installing that siding upside down." Me, "Huh?" "All the wood should be installed in the direction it grew, especially the posts. They are stronger that way because that is the direction that gravity has acted upon them." "How do you know which way it grew?" At this, he just ran his hand along the grain and replied, "You can feel it. It's smoother in the direction it grew."
