Weird take: but the Pied piper from this movie is the best Shrek adaptation of a fairy tale, because he’s literally just the guy from the fairy tale going wild. No extra motive, no comedic edge, he just wants to play his little flute to trap and murder everyone and I respect that.

I honestly *really* like the idea of Ogre Charming. Something that the Shrek trilogy (Shrek 1, 2, and Forever After) always seemed to nail were surprisingly stellar character beats. So the idea of seeing who Prince Charming becomes when he has nothing, not his looks or fairy mommy, sounds super interesting to see tackled. Not to mention a fun spin on Shrek 2's events where Prince Charming robbed Shrek of his identity in a selfish pursuit of a manufactured dream, now we would've seen Charming robbed of his identity by Shrek's selfish pursuit of a manufactured dream.

Forever After is worse than The Third. The latter is bland and sometimes boring, but doesn't mess up the world-building and doesn't introduce any retcons. Not to mention Forever After misunderstood Shrek's character
@mr.gentelman6503 Жыл бұрын
@@wserthmar8908 To each their own. I prefer Forever After because I find “Don’t take things, and people, for granted” to be a lot more universally important of a message than “Don’t be afraid of parenthood”.
@wserthmar8908 Жыл бұрын
@@mr.gentelman6503, it's a better message, but it's not special to Shrek's character. Shrek the Halls did the same thing better without making him dumber, angrier, and incapable of solving his problems. The real Shrek appreciated his friends, but could kick them out if they started getting on his nerves, whereas Forever After's Shrek hated his friends but couldn't kick them out or ask them to leave.
@mr.gentelman6503 Жыл бұрын
@@wserthmar8908 I suppose that’s where I fall short as I haven’t seen Shrek The Halls. At the same time however I would counter that in the span of probably about 5 years he went from being happily reclusive to being constantly under pressure to preform. From an introvert living a low key life to an introvert forced to live an extrovert’s life. I could totally see it start to get into his head that all these responsibilities started when he rescued Fiona and from there that thought started to fester into something nasty until it burst at the birthday party. In my experience when folks feel stuck and frustrated they aren’t going to act the same way they always have, if anything they’re bound to be more volatile.
@colin3ds1 Жыл бұрын
@@wserthmar8908 shrek went through a lot of changes in a short amount of time Its understandable that in a few years after meeting fiona and a year after having kids that he'd be burnt out And while what shrek said at the begining was mean and harsh Even nice people have their breaking point. And the party was specifically designed to make shrek the most stressed he could possibly be I think this movie understands shrek extremely well. The bond between shrek and Fiona was always about the years of loneliness that they had both experienced. That kind of loneliness can do horrible things to a person. Shrek like in the first couple movies struggles to communicate like when things go wrong at the party and he gets blamed for eating and licking the cake he doesnt correct them he just lets them think he was the one who did it. Which triggers a racist remark from his mother in law. As someone who often struggles to communicate and went from extended periods of time alone to having a family. I found the struggle very relatable. My only issue with the movie is that when he goes back to his reality it puts him at the roar I think it should have put him outside the party after he had ladhed out at fiona so he could actually face the consequences and apologize for what he had done

The only people who can appreciate (and UNDERSTAND) Shrek 4 are those who actually KNOW who Rumpelstiltskin is. He's the real driver of this story (I hated him so much in the original fairytale when I was a kid. LOL). Rumpel is a fairytale/folk tale character (Grimm Brothers' collection). He's actually the only accurately depicted character in Shrek as he is originally a fairytale VILLAIN, unlike the fairy godmother and prince charming (and Farquaad). Also, this is the ONLY Shrek movie that actually focuses on Shrek's character the entire movie (similar to Puss' Last Wish movie which is AMAZING). Forever After is an excellent study on character flaws in fairytales, unlike the first two movies which only served as spoof for the concept of fairytales. It's also the first time it delved on the lore of the ogre. This movie is mature and can stand on its own without the other Shrek movies.

I watched the film and enjoyed it. It had action, comedy and adventure in it. The film taught me to appreciate what you have now in your life. It sounds cliche, but, you never know what you have until it's gone. At first, Shrek wanted some space and to be able to act like a typical ogre again. He got what he wanted, but in the wrong way. He had family, friends and people who cared about him. He didn't know that until they were gone. I think a fair compromise for him would be he could spend time with Fiona, alone, somewhere private. Like at a beach in Shrek 2, away from the kids, Donkey, Puss and the other villagers, maybe once a week. In my opinion. And it's like what they said before, have a babysitter take care of the kids for a day while they're out.

Feel like this middle-life crisis was bit out of nowhere. At the end of the last movie he's so happy and now we get a montage of like a week and he's already thinking about going out to buy a pack of cigarettes forever. Would've helped if that montage was in a movie before this and Donkey or someone needs Shrek's help on a quest and Shrek is like: "Can't hear you, babe, gotta go help my bro. Adventure awaits!". Then they go to some even more far far away land where no one actual knows of ogres, so he can get the taste of his old days again. Like this set up It's a Wonderful Life is fine, but bit rushed. Also, what happened when Shrek was born? The day of his birth gets erased and there's a whole camp of ogres now and presumably many more have been caught and maybe killed already. Is he like the harbinger of the ogre apocalypse and wiped them all out just by existing?

This wasnt a week later it was the babies first birthday And I think its natural shrek felt the way he did He had years of profound loneliness and struggles with communication and would rely on being rude to cope or " acting like an ogre" so he ends up bottling his emotions and the party which was extremely stressful it was written to put as much stress on shrek as possible. Like when donkey licks the cake or the pigs eat it and he gets blamed for it he never corrects them instead relys on being rude saying "trust me its an improvement" after donkey licks it and it triggers a remark from his mother in law about acting like an ogre Something shrek had been genuinley trying to improve upon

19:41 Mason missed a golden opportunity to slip in an "Ogre-All" there. Not angry, just disappointed Also I kinda love how at 18:24 Ben and/or Lawrence try to -as politely as possible- reveal that the whole beanstalk thing has already been done in a Shrek-Universe movie and therefore will probably not ever happen again

I am mad that in the endcard they don't say "Who are they meeting?" "Proffessor Shreks of course"

I loved this one, always reminded me of It’s A Wonderful Life (the best Christmas movie)

Yeah, me too! That's why I was so VERY, VERY disappointed with this movie! It's a WONDERFUL Life is my VERY favorite movie of all time! But this was just an EXTREMELY dark, dreary rip-off! NOT an homage! NOT a tribute! Just a BIG, blatant RIP-OFF! This was DEFINITELY my LEAST favorite movie in all the Shrek franchise! 👎

But you are correct in that It's a WONDERFUL Life is the BEST Christmas movie!

I know why James thought it was titled Shrek Goes Fourth! I saw that too! That was the line in the teaser poster. I think it was before the movie had an actual title, or any footage to use in ads. They just wanted to let people know they were working on a 4th movie. I remember seeing “Shrek goes fourth” in magazines. And the image was either just a generic picture of Shrek doing the Dreamworks face, or it was a green number 4 with Shrek ears coming out of the sides of the number.

I think if it was a reboot, they wouldn’t be calling it “Shrek 5”
