I'm actually confused at all the hate on this song. She explained MONTHS ago that she was experimenting with different sounds. It takes a lot of time to find a niche I pop music, and even when you do you have to change it up a hit because the same old same old can get pretty boring. It's not like her singles are horrible, they're actual good, it seems to me like people are holding her to a standard that is too high. She's a good artist. If you don't like it, fine. Don't listen to it. But this girl has worked incredibly hard to get to where she is, and she deserves respect from literally starting from the bottom.

If the lyrics are confusing for you, I think it's because the song takes turns between speaking to two different people. The main verses (the non-chorus parts) are talking to an enemy/rival, or at least someone who is trying to be an enemy. This person is trying to compete for popularity or attention when they clearly do not deserve it. Christina is calling them out while also shrugging and saying, "You're not worth my time." Then in the chorus, the direction shifts to the audience (you and me) at the point where she says, "They be standin' round tryin' to one you up." At this point she starts giving us advice for what to do with people like the one she is dealing with in the other verses. Notice how this "enemy" Christina's dealing with is trying to fight for attention or prove she's better than her; that's what it means to try to "one up" someone. So Christina is reminding us in the chorus that people like this are not worth our time, and we should just shrug at them, as a signal that we just don't care about their attempts to be better than us.

I had to listen a few times, but I think I kind of understand what the lyrics mean now, for the few who were confused. I think it's about another girl enjoying spending time with her ex she "threw away" and that girl doesn't even appreciate the fact that if Christina had not dumped him, she wouldn't even be in that relationship. That's what I got from the first few lines. From the next few lines, I think it means that she believes their relationship is "a joke" and that they're just trying to put on a show which leads me to the chorus. I think the chorus means that they always happen to be around her trying to make her jealous - "They be standin round tryin'a one you up". Saying lies just to make her believe that they love each other, and when she's had enough she just "shrugs" like it's not a big deal. It's just an idea, but people can interpret it different ways. :p Btw this song is AMAZING. My new favorite, very catchy tunes ^_^

What I like about this song is, unlike too many pop songs on the radio today, it isn't overpowering with the synths and Christina's talent as a singer still can shine through without her having to yell. I also love how the bridge isn't just dubstep filler. The whistling hook serves it's purpose, it makes me want to dance, and it's style matches it's message. A great pop song.
