Shug, i recall seeing this a while ago... and i have not read each comment-but, this is an Outstanding lesson! In a pinch- turn the Trash compactor bag inside out (bc ya don’t want dirt going back into your pack when your done) and fill it with leaves. This, is a “Brouse” bag and protects you from the ground-helping you stay off and preventing conduction. AND- I learned to juggle nearly just like this at the end of the vid. Thanks again, my Lord-of-Lollygag!!!

Thanks for all you do for the hanging world! Just wanted to share that I did the JMT 3 years ago on the ground and I missed my hammock. I realized that they have plenty of trees in the west to find somewhere to hang. I took my two boys and some friends back in late July this year. Since you are above the treeline a lot on the JMT I decided we needed a ground game. So we took a klymit air pad for insulation in the hammock and comfort on the ground. We used poly widow shrink wrap for a ground cloth. We could get two fronkey bug nets under one tarp which decreased our foot print. The shock cord on the bottom of the fronkey stays snug under the air pad. The system worked great but fortunately we only had to use it at a campground in Lee Vining the night before we went on trail in Yosemite We were the only ones hanging out west. The buy at VVR even commited that he has never seen a hammock group in area where backpackers camp that he calls mushroom city!Not much on the internet on hanging in the Sierras. Its possible with a little longer tree straps and an option for the ground. Next time I will take my underquilt and just tough it out on the ground if I have on a Sierra adventure.

Hey Shug! I've been on the fence about trying a hammock for about a year now. With my oldest son in scouts (Star) & me serving as a leader, we go camping every month.... Then I stumbled across your YT channel about 2 weeks ago & it fired me up. Got my first hammock delivered last week and can't wait to string her up!! My son doesn't know it yet, but he has one sitting in my closet for his birthday next month!!! Keep posting these videos and we'll keep watching.

When I bought my hammock, I specifically chose one with 3000mm waterproof fabric so it could be used as a bivvy on the ground if necessary. Of course, I'd still use some sort of additional waterproof liner under it. I've always carried an assortment of large plastic garbage bags in my pockets when camping for emergency waterproofing/shelter and recently managed to get some Polycro sheeting. At some stage, I want to get a piece of Tyvek as a more resilient - but still lightweight - "footprint" for going to ground or any other time I might need some additional/emergency waterproofing. My Exped Downmat doesn't work well in the hammock when hanging, but I plan to carry it anyway so I've got something insulated and comfortable to lie on if I have to go to ground for the night - it's worth the extra (negligible) weight and bulk to have it on hand in case of emergencies. ("Better to have and not need" etc) Thanks for showing how it's done. Pretty much as I theorised it would work, but nice to get some pointers from someone with experience. One of the main reasons for transitioning to hammocks, for me, is to have something more *versatile* than tent camping - the ability to set up the tarp in numerous configurations, the ability to camp in places where it's impossible to pitch a tent etc - and that includes being able to go to ground if there's nothing suitable to hang a hammock from. I want my system to give me more options for choosing a place to stay the night than I previously had.

What do you think about a hammock without an integrated bug net? I recently got a bug sock over from Dream Hammock, and I was wondering if a polycro ground sheet was enough protection for the noseeum netting. (will be using an inflatable pad inside the hammock to give it some space). Granted, that will definitely not be the go-to, but a make shift bivy seems pretty awesome to have in the back pocket.

Always having a tarp is half the battle. Since I have gone to the superior gear hammock with the built in underquilt...this method may not work so good. I was really thinking about taking the penalty by getting a real light weight bathtub footprint and a lightweight inflatable sleep pad....and leave the hammock out of it if I am faced with the no tree nightmare.

Sometimes ya' gotta do what you gotta do. Going on a trip this weekend through an old burn area. May have to do this. Go to ground. Taking a light pad along. Excellent video Shug, as always! I'm wondering how that'll work with my netless. I've just ordered netting for making a fronkey style, so I guess I'll just have to experiment!
@shugemery7 жыл бұрын
It would be easier with a netless.
@MstrRo7 жыл бұрын
I have found the Fronkey style is a duff magnet but good in a pinch for the Netless over flat ground.

Good stuff. I always wondered how to do that. Thanks for the tutorial.

Great video Shug!!! Any plans on doing an instructional video about going to ground with an Amok Draumr?

I may someday.

Basically same technique as this video.

Here are some photos of Amok XL on ground. Keep in mind you could void your warranty doing this. Put down a ground cloth. You will need to shorten the XL ridgeline. I wrap it around a small biner to achieve this. flic.kr/s/aHsmqF37Td

Hey shug....surely (and don't call me Shirley) a thermarest would be a better way of getting a good nights kip if you end up on the deck, I know the weight is a ball-ache at 11/2 lbs and the price but worth it for the comfort....as always really enjoyable video...rock on mate...ginge
@shugemery7 жыл бұрын
Trying to do it with what I already carry and would normally not have a full pad with me. But yes...that would make it much nicer.

Hi shug.....meant to ask have you ever used a winter half quilt in conjunction with a down jacket instead of a full over quilt...if so how did you find it....thanks again

@shugemery7 жыл бұрын
Très vrai ... ils ne connaissent pas les hamacs. Ma fille est diplômée il y a 4 ans et travaille avec force. Actuellement en Allemagne actuellement.

I guess I will have to invest in some trecking poles. I am a walking staff person, but between your video and setting up porch style they would be handy. Maybe borrow my son's. I just thought buy some cheap ones to practice in the back yard and use my sons on the trail. That way Stick would not get pissed being stuck at home while I take trecking poles with me.

Bruce Ferguson I have a set from walmart around $20. I use them for porching and tarp poles when ground sleeping. I have had no problems with them for 2 years.

I went through a lot of comments and didn't see what happens in a heavy downpour. I'll be camping at Mille Lacs in June, as we all know...it's going to rain for at least a day and night. There will be puddling. It happens. I have 2 UGQ tarps, 12 feet, one with doors. Will this be sufficient for heavy rain?

Just don't set-up in a low spot. Same as in a tent. Choose your site carefully. Do a good pitch and you should be allright but you never know with nature and wind.

still like my ohm pack and my Cuban fiber tarp you turned me onto...their great. by the way....colemans surplus has these Italian wool officers blankets that are the thickest warmest blankets ive ever seen . 100% wool and don't itch like many woolens do . check em out on colermans site...but you can BUY EM a lot cheaper on sportsmans guide...listed as a chezch blue and white blanket 60 BUCKS is unheard of in a wool blanket of this quality anymore . their very heavy made....but buttery soft
