Hey Shug, Greetings from Utah! Have you ever done an episode on footwear? I would love to switch to trail runners yet if I encounter a really rocky trail, for more than a few hours, my tootsies get tender. So I stick with my Asolos which are quite light for a full blown boot...and as comfy as the dickens. Give us a footwear primer please!

You can't beat it for general overall performance to weight. You are always in the half leg pants, how are ticks and poison ivy/oak/sumac in MN? Howdy Shug , I've been watching your videos all morning , one after another and just can't get enough of your wisdom and comedy. I've got something that I wanna pass along to you about alcohol stoves. I know that you love your Fancy Feast stove so I did some experimenting with a new type stove that I call the Vienna Stove. It's a Vienna sausage can with a 6 ounce tomato paste can inside. Which gives the 1" above the Vienna can that I understand is the preferred height for optimum heat distribution. With all the proper notches and vent holes it's the same set up as the Fancy Feast stove just a little bit bigger. There's no cutting the can down to get the preferred 1" height on the tomato paste can , just remove the bottom , wrap the felt wick around it and slide it in the Vienna can and you're done. Try it if you want to , I like mine. Best wishes to you and your wife.

Hey Steve. I am joined at the hip with my Fancee Feest! I have so many stoves and many sent to me but I always favor the FF. It has never failed me. I get a bit attached to my gear. I'm real glad you are enjoying your Vienna stove. Thankee and Whooooo Buddy)))

I just got back today from a three-nighter first foray into hammocking and this video already made me feel nostalgia. I saw one mosquito during the entire trip and that just cruised past me. There were midges (culicoides) but even they were pretty sporadic and not too bad at all. I spent a little time getting my hang right too, but when I did it was bliss. This video also brought back one of my fondest experiences; lying in my hammock awaiting slumber and listening to the astonishing improvisations of one of the most under-valued songbirds there is, the common blackbird (turdus merula). It's not a bird found in the New World but there was a bird in your video which briefly sounded not dissimilar. It's a bird that is so familiar that people seldom stop to listen, but I frequently do and am dumbfounded by its inventiveness and musicality.
@shugemery9 жыл бұрын
M00nsplitter Happy for the report. Be patient, unlike a tent that you set up and crawl into, a hammock is a bit more to dail in. Sounds you are on your way. I like it when it is all birdy.

I appreciate that you included all those birds singing. There was one bird I keep hearing, I think it is a Wood Thrush, that reminds me of an Irish tin whistle. We have a bird out here in the west that sings like that too. They are hard to see, but can be heard in the dense forest areas along the coast or in the Sierra. For me it is the glorious sound of nature ringing through the piney woods. There was a scene in the Movie "Never on Sunday" where the bouzouki player refused to play anymore because the intellectual guy said he couldn't read music. Then the nice lady said to him, "Can the birds read music, listen to their beautiful song." The bouzouki player started playing again.

Two questions. What do you suggest as a good wind screen for a alcohol stove? Not sure what material is light and durable. Second question, on my hammock I wanted to suspend it using 550 paracord to cut weight, but don't want the chord to cut into the tree. Any suggestions on how to make a little strap or pad so it doesn't tear into the tree?
@shugemery9 жыл бұрын

Shug I hate to even imagine how much time I have spent watching your videos, but it is time well spent. I enjoy them so, and can't wait to do some Hammock camping myself. Have you had any experience with Hennessy Hammocks? My local trusted retailer sells them. Thanks again for the entertainment!!

Allergic To Unhappiness I have not ever laid up in a Hennessy. Those that love them, love them.

Absolutely gorgeous hike. No bugs in Minnesota, here its been crazy due to the mild winter. Hey Shug, I was going to ask, how did the scalding the tortilla work? I saw a steak grill video and they said NEVER use Heet to grill or let it touch food. It's not food safe. Can you share your experience? Thanks for taking us along.

***** I just warmed it a bit....over HEET in the pan. We shall see if I die or get sick! I would not cook a steak over it though....

Ah a pan. That's the way to do it. I've done it over natural gas at home sans pan but after seeing that guy use 151 alcohol to grill his steak it got me worried. Thanks!

I was watching all of your BWCA vids and it's making me wishing my trip up there with the scouts was tomorrow. But it's not until the end of August. Do you happen to know what the bug situation is at that time? It will be my first time up there. Looking forward to it.
