I'm so concerned about losing the ridgeline stored with my tarp, I'm ready to sew one on to my tarp bag. But maybe inside. And add mini-biners to all the rest. I'm starting to get into having all the hardware for each element to store with the item instead of one big hardware dope bag and individual soft goods in separate bags. But what then to do with the bags? I begin to think about having a length of daisy chain webbing hung up. I saw a camp kitchen at last week's PSH hang where all the utensils were hung that way. Zip zip in and out of storage slicker than owl poop off a wet limb.

Not sure why insulated hammocks haven't caught on more. Like Shug says, they're perfect for people that don't want to fiddle with underquilts, but I think they're also perfect for cold weather camping when drafts are more than just uncomfortable.

The number one way heat is lost/transferred is through air flow. If you can seal up anything tight and prevent airflow, it will be very effective against heat loss. This hammock eliminates the chance of any gaps allowing airflow. This might be the hammock that gets me into hammock camping.

Great footage: glad you tested that Superior Hammock. I feel like I might have told you I'd buy it off you, but it sounds like Danny might have supplied it. Either way I'd honor my word. I bought a closeout 0F 10 foot off him. It's in the testing booth. Since my normal setup includes a well-insulated, inflatable Exped Winterlite mummy mat, but laying directly on the hammock like you do was pretty good with the Superior (I have tried others). So it sounds like it tested out well but a theoretical question. All things being equal, would the built in quilt compress more under your body weight than a separately suspended quilt?
@shugemery
@shugemery 3 жыл бұрын
Not at all. It hangs beneath with no compression of the down. The down hangs beneath the body.

Hi Shug, I’m sorry if I missed it but have you done a video detailing how much white gas fuel you bring on a winter trip
@shugemery
@shugemery 2 жыл бұрын
Sorta depends but if using only white gas and not building fire to melt snow it can be 6 to 8 ounces a day. But depends on how much water meals take etc.....

Can I ask a serious question? (I know, I rarely do) Why do you melt snow for water when there is a stream or lake full of already melted snow (water) nearby? Since snow is mostly air, it takes a lot to get significant amount of water and you have to burn a lot more fuel from your stove to melt it and bring it to boil.
@shugemery
@shugemery 3 жыл бұрын
I did mention why. I would have had to backtrack a good way to get to a safe spot to get river water. River running hard..this ice...steep bank. I wanted to melt snow as it is right there.

Great video Shug! I have a quick question about the hammock. When i set mine up, rhe center is tighter and if i try to lay across the hammock, it is tight in the middle of the hammock. I've loosened it and still have the issue. What am I doing wrong?
@shugemery

Make sure you have your suspension at around a 30º angle on the tree. Try going higher if the ridge is still in your hammock. You can also try adjusting the ridgeline on the hammock to get a different sag. I'll include a couple of videos that may help.
