Espire 2 | Quest 2 Review | Metal Gear Solid or Flaccid ?

This is Espire 2. Like it’s predecessor Espire 1 VR operative that came out back in 2019, Espire 2 looks to once again be the Metal Gear Solid for VR that everyone hoped the first title would be. Spolier alert….the first title fell quite short of those lofty goals, but I jumped into Espire 2 excited to see if lessons learned and a focus on releasing the title on ONLY the Quest platform would make Espire 2 the game we all hoped the first would be. Stick around and lets find out of Espire 2 is Metal Gear Solid or another Metal Gear Flaccid.

I mean, I appreciate them trying to make a VR stealth game, there aren't enough of them, but its surprising they even sold enough of E1 to warrant another go lol

Am I the only one that wishes vr devs would focus more on shading, lighting and things like reflection instead of high poly counts? To me, it's much more important for surfaces to react realistically to light instead of having high poly counts. Seeing metal that actually looks like metal, and surfaces that have specular highlights is so much more important than high poly counts. Bonelabs strikes a great balance imo, everything has a realistic texture that reacts at least somewhat realistically to light. I suspect there is a ton of trickery going on, such as pre rendered reflection maps, but it still helps quite a bit to at least have some kind of approximation of those effects. Having a world have just flat, ps2 esque textures just kills the immersion for me.

I don’t really care about shading or graphics in vr. It’s just so immersive as is.I just wish they would make more full games and less rouge lites, multiplayer shooters and survival games.

I appreciated how detailed your review was. I wonder if digital lode made an error by not adopting a more stylised art style to offset the simplified graphics and assets. Also, if you're jumping forward in time, and are running around as ninja robots... Maybe lean into some of the near future sci-fi possibilities as a way to lend your weapons a greater sense of impact and variety... Regardless, I'm glad I've pre-ordered, because there are barely any game development studios here in Australia who have ambitions beyond making the next fruit ninja. Even if they missed the mark, it is right that Digital Lode's reach should exceed its grasp. Or what's Espire 3 for?

I loved the first so this is an easy pick up for me but i wish they worked on the ai and guns more.

Hm. Great review as always guys. Was really pulling for them to get it right this time. I'm a big stealth game fan and It's a genre still really lacking in VR. I'll probably give it a go if it comes to PSVR2 anyway.

Idk if your comparisons of the first game are based on before or after the update. But the developers had tried to update the AI to make it better, although I believe that that might be why the AI is so dumb because the complaints I’ve seen were that the AI were actually too hard to get around. Due to this I suspect that the devs accidentally went in the other direction. While both these games look good they both seem to suffer from what I like to call “the Dishonored problem”, in that a stealth game tries to give you all these options in both movement and stealth/combat, but the AI is too stupid to make those options worth while. A lot of open world stealth games have this issue too, especially Ubisoft games, but I use Dishonored as an example because it’s the most notable.

I've sadly seen PS2 games that look better. They simply need to do a better job with their textures and most definitely with their lighting. No polish at all on this game.

I can live with weak graphics if the gameplay is solid. The first Espire was entirely underwhelming on both fronts.
