You're such a humble dude and I enjoy your calm way of talking. A New Dawn is one of my personal favourites, I've also never understood why it didn't blow up more. The writing on there is absolutely fantastic. To me, Transience, The Cosmic Tide, No Child Of Man Could Follow and A New Dawn rank among your best songs. Thanks for taking the time to interact with the community. It's really interesting to hear your take on all of this stuff. Can't wait for the album btw. Long live Shylmagoghnar!

I'm really glad that you like this sort of thing, as I feel that I don't have to pretend to be someone I'm not to make these videos :) You hit the nail on the head for me with that song list too. I actually regretted not mentioning Cosmic Tide in here, because that one is my favorite instrumental on the debut. It's fun to play too!

Absolutely, I cannot think of anyone else like her out there. One of the only musicians who ever gave me an artistic crisis, when I found out she was only 19 when writing and performing Wuthering Heights - music AND choreography. Absolutely transcendent. Hello brother, I listened to your new single "The Sea" which made my day, as well as "Follow the river" a month ago, when I heard it for the first time. I'm really glad to see you still making your music and those videos. I also really liked this video, you have a great sense of humour and I'm pleased with knowing more about one of my most favourite musicians:) I also want to thank you for your work, Shylma became my most favourite band which I could listen to for the rest of my time. It helped me through the toughest times in my short life, almost when the war in my country strated, it really helped me staying alive mentally. I was so excited when I saw "Follow the River" on KZbin, knowing my favourite band still making such a great and powerful music. I'm also having my first live show tomorrow for which I also want to thank you, because your music had a big inspiration on me and I improved my guitar skills a lot by playing it. I'm so glad to hear that, thank you for telling me! Yes the world is in a dark place right now and we really need to hold on to anything that helps us preserve our sanity. I can not even imagine the horrors that are happening in your country right now. I have had friends in both Ukraine and Russia for many years and this whole thing is just surreal. I don't even know if they are alive anymore. There are no words for it. I'm glad you still have positive things going on in life as well though! Music truly is a powerful mediator. Keep going and let it lift you up! Who knows, you might do the same for others as well :) All the best to you and your loved ones from the Netherlands!

I'm glad you liked it! I wanted to try something new with this release. And yes people have told me that. It's interesting to me because when I started writing for this band I hadn't listened to any of that yet (was still starting out with guitar and very much in my Metallica and Maiden phase back then). I can only assume that the Göteborg sound came from a similar place. Either that, or I accidentally got locked in by the Swedish Hivemind. I blame the cinnamon buns, they are way too good.

Well, I started with Maidens, Dio, JP, Ozzy, All that stuff from 80's. Speedmetal, Thrash, DEATH, Doom... those came to me somewhere in early 90's. You are awesome dude, I love your music, been listening since the first album came out, "I am the abyss" gave me chills all throughout and still does to this day, it is an amazing song. After that when transience came out that song blew my mind, I was on self discovery jorney with psychedelics at that time, and goin through LSD,DMT and ayahuasca experiences and that song made all of that come to life. I remember my journeyswith that song and also helps give them meaning and structure. Now this new song "the sea" wow it´s so beautiful and conveys that beautiful meaning of life so perfetly well, so melodic and profound, like the ocean, it´s just breath-taking. Anyway I love to see the project still going strong and seeing your dedication, it inspires me. Thank you so much for your music, tons of love from Mexico.

Yea I'm not sure either. Part of it might be because it's almost at the end of the album, so it naturally gets less listeners than the intro, but from the stats it really looks like many people skip around it. The only song lower on the list is The Sun No Longer, which is an album outro, so at least for that one I can see why most people are not blasting it on repeat. I've given A New Dawn a booster on Spotify Discovery recently together with a couple of other tracks to see if that would change anything and how they would compare. Out of the 30k people who heard it, 13 added it to their playlist... makes me glad I put Abyss on the first track of that album!

I don't know how long you've been writing music, but it might still start happening after a while. @@Shylmagoghnar I've been playing guitar for 32 years and am a guitar teacher. I had no problem coming up with riffs and writing songs but lately, I've had terrible writer's block. It's funny because back when I was still learning how to play, I was fearless with my writing, but now that I can play WAY better than back then, I have no idea what to do. I feel I do work better with others. Even if I have writer's block, I can come up with variations of riffs very easy. What you are doing is really inspiring me though because I've had terrible luck being in bands. All of them have failed. I should focus on MY music. Me alone. Any time I met someone with potential to help me with my music only ended with me being let down. I will have to step up my keyboard skills, bass, and lyric writing. I'm not good at lyrics because I don't have anything to say. But you have your instrumentals so I could do that too. Most of my music don't have lyrics, so I could convert them to instrumentals. I'm excited for your new album.

Hey Nim, 9 months late so not sure if you'll see this, but I just got back into your music again, and I'm ecstatic to see you've put out a couple new albums since Emergence. I found it back when you released it here on KZbin; similar to others, autoplay directed me to it and I was instantly hooked (which is rare - typically music I really like takes a few listens before it gets the hooks in me). I listened to that album so many times on repeat, front to back, that I burnt myself out on it. But coming back to it got me curious and I'm glad because now I've got some new music to discover. Also, A New Dawn is definitely one of the best songs on Emergence imo. The music on that one is gold, the outro to that song gives me goosebumps everywhere every time I listen to it, and the lyrics really speak to me (I found it just a few months before my first son was born, and it really helped me - a guy who didn't ever want kids - through that rough adjustment). I mean, the whole album really helped me through that time, but A New Dawn especially, as the lyrics really felt really applicable to my life at the time and gave me strength to endure the hardships to come. But any time I've thought about Shylma, that song always comes to mind as it's an absolute masterpiece, so it's crazy to me to hear that it's underperforming. Anyway, I just wanted to say your music is amazing and I'm happy to see you've continued to make epic music. Between this and the Metal Health interview you did a few years back, it's really cool to see the man behind the music - you really do seem like a humble guy, which just further makes me think you deserve all the success you get and more! Keep up the good work, man! You're an awesome musician and producer, and I'm really looking forward to what's to come!
@Shylmagoghnar
@Shylmagoghnar 2 ай бұрын
Happy to say I did see it! I also just responded to your wonderful comment on the new album, thank you so much for all of it - it was just what I needed to hear right now. It's fantastic that A New Dawn took on its own personal meaning for you! It always makes me particularly happy to know that the music is not just enjoyed on a passive level, but actually doing something positive and meaningful in someone else's life. I must also mention that since the release of this video, I've heard many personal accounts about that song, so in retrospect I think I made the mistake of attaching too much value to streaming data. Just because the track gets heard less than others on the album doesn't necessarily mean that it is received badly. A healthy reminder to not dwell on numbers too much! I feel you about the struggles of early parenthood. I did always want a kid, yet despite never wanting to go back, it's undeniably tough as hell. I can only imagine how rough it must be when your own being resists it on some level. Have your feelings towards parenthood changed now that the early years are (probably) behind you? It's also great to hear that the more personal interviews and videos like this one did something for you. I've been trying to become less of a recluse in the last decade, and these were definitely a bit of a jump into cold water for me. That's also why I went in unscripted from the start - I didn't want to give myself the option to develop a camera personality. It's really quite freeing to know that I can just be myself without the world coming to an end - or at the very least not because of that... ;)
@chetramsteak
@chetramsteak Ай бұрын
@@Shylmagoghnar I'm really happy to hear that you've gotten so much positive feedback on A New Dawn - I can certainly see how going by the numbers could skew your view. But it warms my heart to know that you're aware of how impactful what you've created is for some of us. As for parenthood, I'm happy to say that things have gotten much better since, and I'm much more on board now than I was before my first son was born. Both of my boys are school-aged now, which has had its own challenges, but much better than what came before. I was terrified at what becoming a father would mean for me back then, and to top it off, the day my first was born, we became homeless after standing up to our landlord who refused to remedy a pre-existing issue in our apartment that made it impossible for us to bring him home from the hospital. The moment I saw him, I simultaneously melted and hardened myself to fight for him in a way I never would have before, and become the dad I never had. But I feel Emergence really helped me in a profound way through that period, almost as if life gave me the gift of discovering that album at the dawn of the new life ahead of me. I'm just now realizing the irony of the timing of that release and when I discovered it; the name of both the album and my favorite track from it. But it all just makes that record all the more special for me!

Super sorry to hear that man! But yes, I fear that's the case for many bands, and I certainly don't think that it's always based upon the quality of the music! Oftentimes it seems like you're just completely dependent on the algorithm of whichever website you're on to smile upon you that day. I can also tell you that this doesn't change for bigger bands either - there is a reason why around album releases bands generally increase their social media activity so much. It's just rolling the dice over and over again, hoping to reach the people you've created the album for. For example, I've been talking about the upcoming Shylma release for months now, yet I wouldn't be surprised if 50% of my own subscribers haven't heard the news yet. It's always an uphill battle. In short: try to think of more ways to reach people with your new release! Post on more websites, make sure it's available on every single digital platform known to man (you probably already know about that, but there are websites like CDbaby where you can do this without needing a label/publisher), use detailed tags and video descriptions, etc etc. It's frustrating, but that's the way things work these days it seems. And like Paneos71 said: feel free to post your band name here. Maybe some of the visitors will be interested :)

Yeah, I think it's a common issue. I also never feel like spamming people 5 days a week. Takes some time to find your MO, I'm still looking for mine. But yes your attitude is the right one: it can really only get better from here. Look into the history of some of your favorite bands, and I wouldn't be surprised if many of them didn't have a real breakthrough until they were already a couple of albums in. I personally know people for whom that was the case. The main key to growth imo remains to keep looking critically (but not destructively) at your own work and really asking the question: "is this as good as it could have possibly been at the time?". If the answer is no, that's something to aim at for the next release!

As you mentioned "A new dawn" and you said this is the most representative of shylmagoghnar, i wasn't sure if I knew it. Because back in days I heard the album always from start to end and saw only one great song. And I remembered that it is my second favorite part after emergence. And now the part you don't like. The beginning reminds me at ellende - ballade auf den Tod. 😬

Thanks for your reply. The "don't like part" was meant in a ironic misunderstanding reference to your answer. 😜 I understood it right the way you explained it now. It was really nice for me that you were so honest about your mental health in the commentary video of "follow the river". I had depressions for over 13 years and the last year was very chaotic with time in psychiatry. To finally found out this year that I have ADHD. It's good when people talk more honestly about their health and their true feelings to be more kind to and understand each other. So people see, accept and appreciate the differences and diversity among people and don't try to be and look the same... I think if the people would be more honest with their issues and see that there are people all around the world have similar ones, the world could be a better place. It would also be really nice if more artists would make these commentary videos of their own songs. Everybody has it's own feelings and thoughts to a certain piece of music/art and it depends on thousand things, also one thought what could the artist meant with this piece of art, what were his feelings and thoughts, it's nice to have the occasion to compare your guessings with the explanations of the artist. Music is health.

I'm 100% with you on all of that. I made a conscious decision about not hiding that stuff a couple of years ago, because I came to the conclusion that no matter how I spin it, I am very much shaped by those mental issues. As a result, any output I have is inevitably shaped by it as well. It took me years of therapy and medication (I'm off that now, but it served its purpose) to figure out how the hell I'm supposed to exist in a world which is clearly not designed around me. I really tried to be part of it, but after a while I just had to conclude that the only solution for me is to withdraw further into the proverbial woods and create my own path there. That's where I'm finding happiness and meaning now, and ironically, it has made me more resillient when dealing with the unavoidable day-to-day interactions with the "normal world". And of course, this project is an ideal arbiter between the two, forcing me to find balance between both worlds. Stick with the fight man, it's the only constructive option there is really. And if you're having a bad day... blast some Equilibrium - Unbesiegt ;)

It's nice to see that you found your way and as you said in the video that you not felt that good for a long time. Your way lead you to be a nice musician (which one of his greatest influences was the commodore 64) with a great family that supported you and now you have your own little family. It's nice that you and your wife have Warhammer as a common passion. Your answer to "the meaning of life" is exactly the same i would give. It's something that requires it self in a circle or a spiral. For those who really questioned the signification / meaning of their existence experienced this spiral the other way around. You described it correctly as the chicken egg problem. (For the real chicken egg problem was for me always a clear evolutionary answer xD). One has to give it meaning by your self, their are few other people that can give it to you, sometimes you need such people, but one can not always depend on them and maybe drain all their energy, one has to give it back by finding meaning in life by oneself. As you mentioned that you aren't a religious person, religions only pretend that they can give you the meaning of life but they only define if it's the chicken or the egg and confine/restrict every further questioning. So you can define the borders of your questioning all by yourself and start to take the life as it is and try to share it more with nicer people instead.

Amazing video! Really appreciated! Btw, I'm at fault for comparing your work to Be'lakor's, but in all fairness I never intended for it to imply that you were being inspired by them or such, it was simply a way to get Be'lakor fans into Shylmagoghnar more easily, because both bands imo have the epic journey quality to their songs
@Shylmagoghnar
@Shylmagoghnar Жыл бұрын
Oh yes don't worry about it, I totally agree with you and in retrospect I think I generalized a bit too much in the video cause it was a spur of the moment thing. I've seen many people make positive comparisons between Be'lakor and Shylma and I have no issue with that. They are a respectable band and we play a similar genre, so it's perfectly sensible. What I was really intending to refer to here is people who specifically make statements like "this riff was CLEARLY inspired by Band X", or "this is a ripoff of Song Y". You should see the amount of reactions I get to the introriff of Emergence (the song). Apparently I've stolen that one from 50+ different bands, some of them being rap groups! It's hilarious honestly.

My pleasure, thank you for the question! Yes, Blackwater Park is high up for me as well - for some reason I just don't listen to that one from front to back as often as I do with Morningrise. The Drapery Falls truly is hnnngg tier though. Ghost Reveries I must be the weird one out, cause I never liked that one and I don't know anyone who agrees with me on that :D The Grand Conjuration is badass though, I have to be fair. Honestly, I wished I had done a little bit more homework before recording the video. I could have looked up how to pronounce every name on the list - I just hadn't considered that it might be an issue when I started recording. A link to these is on the Shylmagoghnar Bandcamp ( shylmagoghnar dot bandcamp dot com ), as it depends on what country you're from. Convergence shirts should still be available through the Napalm Records online store (there is a US and EU version). Those might also be available through general retailers and music/merch stores. For Transience there used to be shirts made by Napalm Records but I think they haven't been printed in a while, so unless you find old stock floating around, I don't think they are available anymore. Hope that helps in your search! Thanks again \m/

How much time did you take to be able to play guitar, bass, keyboard, drums and is that a violin? Will you plan to sell tabs/guitar pro files/midi of some songs to play at home? BTW, great music. @Shylmagoghnar
@Shylmagoghnar Жыл бұрын
Thank you kindly, and good questions! Haha and yes, I know exactly what you mean. To me the project can be very soothing as well - I don't even hear the screamed vocals as something harsh anymore these days. The required learning time is hard to quantify, because I feel that I'm still learning a lot on every single one of those instruments every year and I don't play them all at the same level. But I'll attempt to answer anyway: The beginning took the longest and was by far the hardest. I started out with guitar and more or less picked up audio engineering at the same time during my teenage years. Being rather aimless in the first few years, it took me a good decade to get to a point with either one of those where I considered myself somewhat competent. But once you've taught yourself to do a thing or two properly, you tend to pick up habits which work for you, and those can often be applied to any other topic. So for other instruments it was maybe only a couple of years until I started to feel the freedom I was looking for. Simple things like "slow down and play with a metronome", or "slow down and try to figure out what is causing that unwanted noise" make a world of difference. You also just become better at withstanding the frustration of being terrible at something, as you've seen before that it's only a matter of time. As for tabs: it's mostly just been a time constraint thing. I would love to just give everyone perfect tabs for free, but I struggle to manage my time between working on new music/promotion and being a father, so usually when I have time for music, making tabs is low on the priority list. I think we should slow the earth's rotation down a bit, so there are two more hours in a day.
@Shylmagoghnar
@Shylmagoghnar Жыл бұрын
Oh and to add, yes that's a violin! It's used on the new album a little bit. I won't lie though: I consider myself FAR from competent on that one! I only started it relatively recently and... let's just say that I agree violin is notorious for a reason ;) The early stages of that are definitely a form of self-flagellation and I have infinite respect for anyone who manages to get through that as a first instrument.
