The audience I primarily target with my videos are those who are interested in privacy/security, but are new/hesitant. As well as those who have a baseline, but are looking for more. I don't see much of a point in trying to convince someone who doesn't have any interest. Even "in person" I don't typically talk about it unless someone asks me first. If you have to drag someone kicking and screaming, they're much less likely to stick with it if something doesn't go smoothly.

I actually thought I was really careful regarding both my privacy and security. I'm deep into the Apple ecosystem with both iPhone, Macbook, Apple TV and Apple watch. I use several of their free and paid privacy/security services. I see that the P7a might release soon and I am highly considering making the change beginning with my phone, but I do have several questions. When I get the brand new P7a, can I immediately install GOS or do we have to wait for new compatible versions of GOS? If so, how long does it usually take for a compatible version? With iOS I use services which I would like to mimic on GOS. I use services like icloud+, apples built-in vpn in safari, hide my email and keychain combined, imessage and facetime (both e2e). Hide my email and keychain is something I just cant live without anymore.

Regarding "PIN scrambling" - I wonder if there's a way to add 2fa to unlock the phone with hardware security key like yubikey? My issue that I have is that fingerprints (and biometric as a whole) can be faked, and entering 20 pin every time to unlock phone could be tedious, and also it can be spied on. So if you have one of those small keys with nfc, they can be weared on a wrist. So that after you enter your pin - you then put in on your wrist, and nfc in key unlocks the phone?

Can tney be installed on Graphene or would they be incompatible? 2) At the beginning of the video there was a brief mention of installing Google services. Is it necessary for apps? Does it not open the floodgates to Google's massive data harvesting and selling? 3) How well does Graphene do in supporting older hardware and continued security patches? In the past the main reason for upgrading my phone has not been hardware failing, but rather security patches no longer bein available. The only exception was the Google Pixel series(pixel 3 is still good enough), but that means submitting to the data harvesting.

The main apps that most people note that don't work are android auto, and google pay. Everything else *generally works*. I say generally, because I haven't tested every possible app. For RCS, you need to install Google messages and the sandboxed Google Play Services. Once you do that, you'll be able to enable RCS in the app.

I had sandboxed google play running on a separate profile on my Pixel 7 for a few months. Unfortunately it was way too inconvenient for my usecase so I have unified it all under a single profile. You still get substantial privacy and security improvements over Stock Android due to reasons like: Google Play Store and Services being in a sandboxed state (unlike privileged state in case of Stock Android), the Storgae Scopes option, Vanadium hardening. Other factors like Wifi and Bluetooth timeouts are also a bonus over Stock OS. TL;DR: Yes, GrapheneOS is absolutely worth it even with only a main profile even with sandboxed google services.

While I don't daily use my pixel 4a, I use google services along play store. The reason why these services are a headache on normal android is their whole system access which is solved by sandboxed. I only give it internet access which is so nice and also it can't auto update which I also didn't like with normal android play services. Their sandboxed google services/play store is the REASON why I wanted to try GrapheneOS. Nice compromise that I'm OK with.

I would steer clear of the 5 as it will be EOL October 2023. If your budget permits, look for a 6a. If you spend $100 on a 5 that will last for 6 months vs. a 6a you spend $400 that will last 3.5 years. The upfront cost is more, but the yearly cost on the 6a is lower than a 5. (I made the $ up just for this example).

No, GrapheneOS explicitly offers support as long as device support code like firmware, kernel and vendor code is actively maintained (paraphrased from legacy devices section in FAQ). Offering longer support would have been ideal, but unfortunately compromises privacy/security due to lack of latest updates on hardware after EOL, which leaves the device vulnerable to firmware bugs which cannot be resolved by just an update to the OS and need vendor support

Shipping latest AOSP updates does not provide the current patch level." Google coordinates with the 3rd party vendors who's hardware they use to provide updates. Newer devices are receiving security updates for 5 years now - support.google.com/nexus/answer/4457705?hl=e. It's not that hardcore GrapheneOS users change devices every X years, it's that no one should use a device that is no longer receiving security updates. Once a device reaches EOL (regardless of the OS), it should no longer be used.

Can you please tell me that if there is any difference between camera quality of pixel 7 pro running graphene os and stock os
@adityapathak5761
@adityapathak5761 Жыл бұрын
I am on Pixel 7, and there is a substantial difference using Gcam. Portrait mode is the biggest missing feature in GrapheneOS camera, and Gcam is the best in business for that. You can still achieve privacy by installing Gcam (and Google Photos if you want to seamlessly view pictures from Gcam without switching to the Gallery) and denying network permission, this will ensure Google can't collect any data from these apps about you, and you don't have to login with your account either, while still being able to benefit from their features.

Just to add to what @adityapathak5761 said, there is a difference in features between the GrapheneOS camera and Gcam. You can install Gcam on GrapheneOS and have the same features as stock Android OS - grapheneos.org/usage#google-camera. I've tested it before, it works well.

How GrapheneOS handles OS updates? Once Google/AOSP releases new securityand/or OS update, does it becomes available on the very same day? or GrapheneOS team does some modifications to the updates as well? Also, does the number of years of Security and OS updates still depend on device, or GrapheneOS? For example, 6A will get guaranteed Android version updates until at least July 2025, and security updates until at July 2027. So does that mean GrapheneOS will also stop supporting 6A after the end of supported version by Google?

@@sideofburritos Hello, maybe I was too rough but the idea is simple: it is also based on your contacts (very bad idea) and honestly even with the end to end famous secure algorithm behind, maybe the server owners might decrypt your keys if the really want to, who knows. There are some tutorials how to deploy your own signal server but are old which let me understand that is not available anymore, so not so open anymore... Ok, compared with whatsapp and telegram is better but I would avoid it because a better solution is to have your own server (on prem) like I said, either matrix or ejabberd like I have (both closed, no federation). I have mentioned Session, well seems like is more secure since the traffic is passed over the loki network among so many protected nodes (at least Rob Braxman said that). if you can't deploy a personal server, I personally would go with session instead. I will change my thoughts about signal only when a clear procedure to deploy a server will become available. This is just a general opinion, nothing more. Maybe I am wrong, this is what I know based on my experience. And yes, sorry for my initial comment, it was too rough. Thank you.
