I think people assume that someone will look after it....a church or relative. And within a generation or less, it slips away. It is very sad but I this channel. Hopefully someone will realize their ancestor has been forgotten and step up.

It's supposed to be a resting place, and instead, it's become a disaster. I don't understand how a county allows a cemetery to be desecrated in this manner. ???

I agree Judy. I hope they do come back to this cemetery. It's very interesting. But I really feel bad about the one that got hit by the tree. It seems that it must be an old grave or they don't have family that visits being in that condition unless it recently happened. I'd love a company to see this that fixes such and could come in and restore that person's resting place.

I believe Bartow was killed during the massacre at Forsyth ,Ga (not far from the town this cemetary is in). Maybe not in Forsyth but as part of the evilness that spurred from the klans involvement in the massacre. If you look it up, it's terrible to read :( There was also pics taken too as "souvineers".

My dad is just short of ninety and I have had numerous conversations about death and dying. When you die only immediate family really cares for any length of time. Even for immediate family visiting a family grave becomes infrequent and not existent. Even famous people get essentially forgotten once their generation is gone. Dying is a strange thing. At some point you become more of a curiosity to strangers than anything.

I've read that the average gravesite gets visitors for about 60 yrs after the person's death. (On average) so after the passing of that time .. your grave is on your own. So to speak

A lot of cemeteries are abandoned because the dead do not complain, and the living usually don't care. I always felt the dead should be remembered as best as possible. I think the opposite on that open casket/tomb below the fallen tree, maybe the deceased body is grateful to sense its prison has been cracked open, even if it is underwater. Maybe it's grateful for visitors and sunlight. So much can be said for the voiceless dead. I definitely enjoyed this video. Keep doing what you do.

Judy, you have long dead family members you don’t visit or even know where they are. Have you ever been to the grave of your great great grandfather? Or great great aunts? Most of the family of these folks don’t even remember them… it’s not their fault.

@oldageisdumb I know where most of my family are resting, my family a few of them came from the UK and Ireland, some of those who also married Native American Indians, our family cemeteries are in Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama. My ancestors are as far back as the early 1800s, I've done research back to my 5th great grandfather who is resting in Ireland he is on my mother's side. I also search finder grave for family members' grave sites, where their are photos of the grave that a very good way to keep an eye on the care of the cemeteries. I do not have to be personally there to check up on their resting place. We, as a family, one of us live within 30 minutes up to an hour away from a family cemetery. When my parents passed, they wanted to be cremated, and my sister is resting in a small cemetery, I'm placing plaque with mom and dad picture with their birth date and passing date. I hope you have a blessed day.

@oldageisdumb I'm not placing blame on anyone, I just don't understand why, and how does a person who served in our military be forgotten, the military keep records with every headstone they place.
@oldageisdumb
@oldageisdumb 4 ай бұрын
@@judytaylor4133 You are talking about millions of individuals.. how could the military possibly keep up with that? They are here to defend our country, they can’t be also tasked with maintaining millions of graves. But a better idea would be if you were to start a non profit charity that could do just that. Instead of telling someone else to do something, do it yourself!

I've been watching your videos for awhile. I just want you to know how much I enjoy them. I was happy to learn my family isn't exclusive to wanting old cemeteries cleaned up. Before she died, my mother (with Parkinson's Disease!) worked on cleaning up the "Old Rapids City Cemetery" in Illinois. Oh! Just watched you fall in your latest video!! Holy moly! I hope you're ok. ... A cemetery you would love is Paradise Cemetery, Cochise County, Arizona (on the NM/Mexico/AZ border). It's near the Chiracahua Mountains. My husband & I visited it about 5 years ago when we spent a summer in the area. It needed cleaning up, so that's what we did as best we could. We also drove 65 miles to Walmart to buy candles and plastic flowers. There were many graves marked "Mexican unknown." So sad. Just a sad, a grave for "Mrs. Madlady." She had no family and the locals thought she was mentally ill, thus the name they gave her for eternity. Even more interesting... 2 graves in the Chiracahua Mountains for men "killed by Indians." I live in Massachusetts, so I love seeing the regional differences in cemetery markers. Anyway, thanks so much for all you do! You are making a difference.

TEC4 is an abbreviation for Technician fourth grade. It was a rank of the United States Army from 1942 to 1948, created to recognize enlisted soldiers with special technical skills, but who were not trained as combat leaders. The rank was abolished on August 1, 1948, but the concept was revived with the specialist ranks in 1955.

This is such an amazing old cemetery! Probably not many of these graves are listed on Find A Grave, if any? That first headstone that had the marbles reminded me of a number of old markers that I have seen where marbles are used as part, if not all of the headstone decor. There is one out in our local town cemetery that is a handmade marker, and the old rumor about the lady buried there is that she was a witch. I totally discount that, but her headstone is quite unique. I love your cemetery walks, and I try to envision what some of these folks' lives were like and what they looked like. Thank you for walking their where their earthly bodies were laid to rest and for bringing them back from history for a little while. The music you chose was perfect, too! ❤

Wow,Robert this one is huge. Yes,go back if you can. Gave me a start when you tripped and fell. 😟Glad you're okay. I have long had an interest in the Old South and have read many books and articles on the plantations and enslavement,watched all the movies and videos,just a sponge I am...I love history. I have much sympathy for any people oppressed and that includes most,so it is touching and sorrowful to see those buried and forgotten. As many as we might find of those enslaved in the United States, there are many more we will never find. Between 1525 and 1866 according to the Trans-Atlantic Slave trade database,12.5 million African people were shipped to the so called New World. An estimated 1.8 million were during a 2 month journey on the sea thrown overboard after dying under horrendous conditions.They had names we probably couldn't pronounce if we knew them. Will there be forgiveness for those associated with such an enterprise?we will only know that on Judgement day. But I feel God knows all,it is His place to judge what man has done and how all will be made right in His time and His way. To have knowledge of the fact these people lived and breathed on this earth we now walk on,and they had lives we can only imagine, but still have reverence for, shows we as God's children have a connection. A spiritual connection we all seek back to the Father and His son. Thanks for another walk and a look back and a reflection. We can't correct the past, we may only make amends,and hopefully not add to the suffering of any. In the words of Abraham Lincoln,with malice towards none and charity for all. I pray for the American people daily,North,South, East and West. May God lead us all in the days ahead.😔

Tec4 or T4 was a technical soldier equivalent to sergeant. They were not Non-commissioned officers and they didn't command other troops but their skills were valuable and they were paid the same as a buck sergeant. They were highly trained soldiers. The rank was discontinued after WWII but revived in the 1950s as specialist and became more common as the army shifted to more technical weaponry and equipment.

Or at least not that long ago I know some are very old and mabe know dependence but can't someone find people to help it out a bit like the tree on the onenow open at least move the tree and see what could be done. So very sad .but a very amazing fi d and part of history. Thank you for sharing with us and hope you can return for more of the historical part of it all .take care and be careful out there. 😊😊

Since there are many burials, shouldn't there be information through the State or County on it's history? Very interesting cemetery.

I can't always see the indentions in your videos, but I surely could this time. So huge! An entire city of the dead. I could tell you were creeped out when you didn't stop to read all the markers like you usually do. Take care and God bless. (And yes, please, return--with Dan and others!)

I have heard older folks saying that they must needs go sweep the graves. It now makes sense, they were going to sweep those slab markers.

A couple of years ago you documented an African slave cemetery and told the reason that most slave graves were left unmarked. Though I can't remember all the details, it was a learning experience. Perhaps you can share that again sometime.

I see these grave yards on your site and the conditions and stories and ask myself "why",, We go through working like dogs all of our lives, and in the end, most family etc.. don't want anything you have collected, saved, was past down from long gone generations of the family, things you have cherished over the years, silly things like your kids or grandchildtrens art. your kids report cards, hair and yes I still have teeth the tooth fairy did not take with her...And then they spend so much money to put you 6 ft, under and at some point no comes anymore.. Why?? My plan is cremation, toss me in the field my partners are in, my faithful, loving buddies always by my side, my dogs, an occasional, sweet barn cats, and several of my horses that brought me such joy over the years.. And no spending 10 or 15 grand for a funeral I do not want.. Peace out........

Seeing these old cemetaries makes me very sad. This is why, my husband and i chose to be creamated and ashes spread off a beach. This is very egregious to me, as these poor souls have been abandon by their loved ones, relatives, towns, counties, or Cities. These cemetaries and grave yards, should always be kept up in respect for our fallen, our families and relatives. This is just heartbreaking. These people were loved and belonged to someone. The fallen soldiers is so disrespectful to all of us. God bless them 🙏

I grew up where my mama was terrified of Cemeteries. But me when I got grown loved to go to the cemeteries. I like looking at what year they were born and how old they were and what their lives might have been like when they were alive. I can be in a cemetery for hours and hours and it just doesn't seem like I've actually been there that long. But you can't argue with time, so. Lol. You can get lost imagining how these people went about their everyday lives when they were alive. I'm wondering if they died from some kind of plague or disease. So my mama and everybody else in the family always told me that I was not right! But they would say it in a joking way. Thanks for sharing your videos.

For yrs I would take a certain road to go see my daughter..one day I happened to look to my left and saw a small graveyard. It was winter so once spring came I had to go see it. There may have been 25 headstones so quite small, wasnt taken care of very well..I took photos to look up who these people were. I started researching the name on the largest headstone. The name of this family was Bigelow. Has I looked into his ancestors, I came across 2 familiar names, they were my 6th or 7th gen grandparents!!! I WAS RELATEDTO THEM! The Bigelow's were the first settlers in Springfield Township Michigan and only one man with that sir name came to America..so that means all Bigelow's and descendants are related. So that meant I was related to my 5th grade teacher! I called the historical society to talk to them abt it.. they finally put up a sjgn and are now keeping it up.

It would be really nice if there was a community that would help support the cemetery and help clean that area up and make something that you could tell where the graves are and maybe even identify the graves of the people laid to rest in the cemetery it’s so sad that it has been let go and not anyone made any effort to mark the graves
