im massively nostalgic for the late 80s pricing. first time i bought space marines was the RTB001 box and you got 30 plastic multipart space marines for £9.99. the rest of it, im 41, i was painting models when i was 8 years old, they were awful compared to what we have now. metal models are an abomination. everything is so much better now. i actually stopped the warhammers around 1994, went to highschool, found out girls, beer, heavy metal and jungle music was a thing... it wasnt til about 2016/17 i randomly heard a few of leutins lore vids and for some reason i ended up on forgeworlds website, i saw the new exalted keeper of secrets... jesus, rly? this is what warhammer looks like now? compared to the keeper i had in 1991? im back, i need models like this in my life... ...wait its £100? wtf? my 1991 keeper was £4.99 🤣 not gonna lie, i bought it anyway.

I felt like warhammer stayed relatively the same since I was a kid through high school etc. then I come back in 2023 and it’s insanely different. Contrast paints and airbrushes, huge bases and primaris and retired units and all this

it's hard to explain.... but I am very nostalgic about the first generation metal space marines and terminators an d orcs... as far as paints goes I still miss some of the colors that were just amazing that were just better colors. while I do really enjoy painting old miniatures a great deal I do really also appreciate the new models and the abundance of high quality paints from a bunch of great paint vendors. while people do talk about how good the older paints were better and while that was true with some of the colors there were no where near the range of colors and shades available that are available now and that is not really even considering the contrast/speed paints... when it comes to brushes better brushes are readily available now days which was also not true... so considering all of it things are better now in almost every way..... but I still have nostalgia and luckily enough for me I still have plenty of older stuff to paint yet when I get the itch.... but wow... the new models are simply amazing....edited to add my two favorite colors from the past were bolt gun metal and tin bitz...

I started in the hobby around the 90s 'heyday'. I do love flicking through old White Dwarf and catalogues etc but I'd much rather built and paint a primaris. Better in almost every way in my opinion. I think, as with most things people are passionate about, there is a perceived 'right way' to enjoy everything. Like you mention about bands/music etc. I mean, its called a hobby! Like what you like, build what you want to build and obviously Dark Angels is best😉

I only got into the hobby ten years ago, and through the Hobbit Strategy Battle Game and then got into Age of Sigmar after that. So for me all the Middle Earth stuff gets me feeling nostalgic, as with some of the early Age of Sigmar releases. But I definitely prefer newer kits though and enjoy working with them so much more, even in that short space of time they’ve improved so much in quality.

It's about the amount of available income. Those who are nostalgic for the early 90s are mid 40s to mid 50s now. Their children are more self sufficient and they have a chance to reflect on what they like to do. Midlife crises are and will be Games Workshops bread and butter as long as they continue growing.

90s warhammer isnt nostalgic for me either, even though I was a teenager then. Many of the models I think look really goofy, and the charm they have doesn't generate any feeling for me. What is interesting is that I am extremely nostalgic about Magic cards from the first 5-6 years of the game. To the point where I collected most of them in the early 00s to fill out what remained from my childhood. It is really cool is that both these old cards and old models can be used in games to this day.

I thought about the nostalgia thing. I think for me, the "cool" of the 90s 40k wasn't so much the goblin green and the bright colours. For me it was a mix of the early lore and characters and GW's approach to cultivating the hobby. I remember an article in white dwarf, how to make your own land raider, with templates. I could never see them doing that now. its too sales driven. and I feel like the modern run of miniatures also feels that way. So many armies just kicked to the side for more and more space marine releases.

Great show even with just the piercing cult boys present :P I got into the hobby in 1990 as a kid and I totally get the nostalgia but I think that's just happy memories attached to editions of games or models like a time marker (like an old song reminding you of that great summer). But it wasn't all roses. Like you say the paints were not great. If you wanted anything red or yellow you had to paint the area white first. Metal models would need pinning on any pieces larger than a marine arm and metal minis would chip paint if you just looked at them the wrong way. It's definitely a golden age for the hobby with the sheer range of minis, technical paints and tools but most apparent is the knowledge sharing on social media. In the 90's you were only as good as the best painter who was willing to teach you either in a GW or a hobby club. Maybe you learned something from White Dwarf but that was it. Now people can learn so much so quickly before even picking up a brush and I welcome anything that lowers the barrier to entry. Great advice on the airbrush cap. It's a tradeoff between playing dare with the buildup on the cap or being able to put your hand over the end to do a backwash to mix the paint. I keep an old toothbrush handy (not electric like Moneybags Otero) to keep the nozzle cap clean as I use it. Cheers for another great episode. That's a Bloodbowl team assembled while listening.

if you see this before recording, or maybe for the next one, I would love to ask your guys opinion on Grim Dark colour schemes, is it over done by now? Do you like it, enjoy it? I dont see a lot of Siege Studios doing Grim Dark style, though I have seen you do minimal weathering from time to time. Personally, I think a little scuff, especially on boots or guns, and on vehicles in particular is great! but some people are basically dipping their models in weathering grease and calling it grim dark, to cover up for crappy paint jobs.. That being said, Trovarian, is a legend and his style is insane! Where is the balance for you? Thank you xxx

Have to agree, as someone who has only been painting for a couple of years (and has still never played a game!) I have no nostalgia for the older stuff, I think some of it looks ok but the newer stuff has way more character imo.

one thing, youre wrong but actually youre right... you can just walk into a shop and get iso alcohol in the uk. if you go into boots they sell it as "surgical spirit", but youre right because its about £6 for a half litre bottle, which is probably a bit cheaper than airbrush cleaner but its not some big 6 pint jug of the stuff from a hardware store for a fiver which is what u really want.

99% ISO is readily available in the US at EVERY drug store and is very affordable. This is the first time I've ever heard about it being rare in the UK. So weird to me.

As an Ynnari player, I don't like the lore point of them showing their faces.. I just can't paint faces well enough and the Eldar and Drukhari helmers _are so cool_ that I'm running out of helmeted heads to put on my models.. and while there are thousands of good custom 3D sculpts for Space Marines helmets, as well as lots of first party from GW and Forgeworld.. where are my alternative Eldar helmets?!

I don't get the nostalgia thing. Whilst I didn't play warhammer, I did have Space Crusade as a kid, so I'm quite used to the 2nd edition marines, and well IMO they just weren't great, especially when you put them next to current gen models.
