Hi DanOne Music! Butterfly knives are not exclusive to one style, but are essential weapons in all Southern styles of kung fu like Choy Li Fut, Hung Gar, Mantis and Wing Chun. They are probably associated most with Wing Chun because it is one of the two weapons they teach whereas other Southern styles teach a handful of weapons so they can easily be overlooked.

@@SifuKuttel had to ask as I met some Wing Chun practitioners over the past 30 yrs that tell people that is THEIR weapon 🔪 I personally use a water gun with acid in it , jk 🔫

Agree with Siful Kuttel here. Butterfly Swords or Butt Jarm Dao are used throughout most southern style Kung Fu systems. Wing Chun became well known because of Bruce Lee. Other systems like Choy Lee Fut, Hung Gar, etc of southern systems are not as well known in the west. To me, the short Butterfly Swords are an excellent system for modern day defense as it is short enough to provide hidden carry. Glad to see Sifu Kuttel lead and guide westerner beginners for practical usage of these.

Hey Sifu Kuttel 😊 I have a question about training both sides of the body. As a martial artist how do you decided which techniques to practice both sides? My thoughts would be to practice the basics. Would you practices forms on both sides? Cheers Shannon ✊

I agree with you that basics should be practiced on both sides, but unless your life pursuit is a specific weapon or form, there's no need to practice a form on both sides. Many forms have unique techniques for both right and left sides, and repetition of the basics so just by virtue of practice, you should have a strong base. After that, if you really want to master a weapon, you need to spar with it and find which side and techniques you favor. Then you can fortify your base techniques while pursuing others.
