You know you're having a fun fishing trip when you can drop a 15lb trout (5:20) and not immediately break down in existential crisis on the river.

Hello bro.....I live in Washington state and we have the mighty Columbia river which puts out some big Steelhead and Salmon but those trout you are catching are real monsters.......love watching you guys catch those awesome fish!
@MichaelPhillips-jw4bj3 жыл бұрын
the difference is your fish are true native wild fish finely tuned over thousands of years to the columbia, that survive the trip to and in the ocean for years. whales,sharks,seals,pike minnow,eagles,bears,dolly varden etc its 8% out of millions of smolts from birth that make it.. No disrespect but These fish are plants with almost zero natural predators and hatchery, food farm escapes, feeding on hormone altering hatchery and farm pallet food that leaks into canals from the many hatcheries along it. This leads to all the deformities were seeing in many of the large fish he catches...... Note i respect these fish and am not trying to diminish the angler but i'd treasure the few native wild steelhead left more then anything

Yeah boi. Hey, can anyone explain the rules of fishing in NZ? Licences, courses etc. Curious
@cweedmbr3 жыл бұрын
Haven't lived in nz for ten years but wen I left, you needed a trout license but ocean fishing was for free and you didn't need boat license or boat rego only trailer rego unlike here in oz
@thor_68863 жыл бұрын
@@cweedmbr Yip, that's it. All freshwater fishing requires a licence. Some areas are restricted to fly fishing only, some to artificial lures and flies, and some allow natural bait,. Some areas close to fishing at certain times of the year.The topic of 'private waters' is an interesting one. Supposedly nobody owns rivers, but you can only fish rivers running through private land if you can follow the river bank very closely and access the river from public land at some point - e.g a bridge.

What weight rod you guys use for this? I would think you need at least an 8 like I use for surf, but the lack of fighting butt makes it look like its a 5 or a 6. I cant imagine trying to get a 20 pound fish on a 5 wt, I dont have the skill for that😂

@twizel58443 жыл бұрын
Yes, it's the first year F&G have allowed fishing in September, but from what I understand may not be a permanent thing... as the weather starts to warm, about the only thing you will catch from this river is didymo.

You're fishing South Island, correct? Why are the fish so much bigger?
@AlphaAscentMotivation3 жыл бұрын
it is because there are Salmon farms in the south island cannals and the Salmon food escapes and all the trout eat it.

Are these sea run fish
@thor_68863 жыл бұрын
No. Landlocked within a canal/river system, potentially a lake as well, though i don't know if the river drains a lake. They migrate upriver to spawn like their steelhead ancestors from California.

@MrCardrona713 жыл бұрын
These fish have just finished spawning, not in the best condition to eat.
@puprilla3 жыл бұрын
@@MrCardrona71 why? They dont die like salmon right. Souldnt matter. Ive got plenty with eggs in and they taste great
@MrCardrona713 жыл бұрын
@@puprilla trout spend summer months building themselves up for when they spawn, so they can leave there normal spots in lakes and rivers heading up stream, often with large groups of fish congregating in small areas, so more fish competing for less food (this is why when your fishing in the rivers during spawning they can be easier to catch) so the further through the winter months you get the less condition some fish will have (salmon start spawning first, browns, Rainbows last, over lapping each other, Jan-sep, that's why a lot of river close to allow them to spawn in peace) if you catch a fish with eggs in it, it hasn't spawned and if caught early in the spawning season will still be in relatively good condition. Personally I'd put a hen full of eggs back, helps to keep the population re stocking. The river these fish are being caught in is closed from April till September to allow them to spawn. Bit of a novel sorry, but hopefully answer your question- fish caught early in the spawning season will taste ok-fish caught mid to end of their spawning season not so good 👍
@puprilla3 жыл бұрын
@@MrCardrona71 cool man thanks. I didnt know. I release the big girls too. I only take a few males.this whole summer i only took 6 trout and 1 was female the rest male. I agree with letting the females breed
@puprilla3 жыл бұрын
@@MrCardrona71 is that why ive been getting all the trout in heavy flowing water right next to big rocks? Ive wondered why they have all been in spots like that for the last few months. I live in Colorado so its been to hot for them to want to spawn i believe its been 90s plus for 4 months
