Regarding the rubber band cover : I purchased mine from someone who got theirs pre-release for testing. It seems that was not included in their kit, but was added for production. Just ordered it separately!

Sorry, my comments referring to the unique aspects of this lens are coming from a Sony-user perspective. I really wouldn't consider this review to apply to all systems because Sigma's AF performance is going to be largely dependent on the camera platform.

As Luis Gabriel said, Nikon has the Nikkor 105mm f/1.4e, which is slightly smaller and much lighter at less than 1kg and has a 82mm filter. Wide open, optically the Sigma may be slightly better than the Nikkor, with the Nikkor performing surprisingly similar (though not quite as good but close) to the Zeiss 85mm f/1.4 Milvus. Personally, I would take the Nikkor over the Sigma every day of the week, the advantages you get with the Sigma, just arn't enough to make up for the extra weight and as a person who suffers from tennis elbow. The 105e just is on the right side of that weight line.

The lens comes with a rubber ring that will be used to slide over the screws, when you remove the tripod mount ring.

I felt that the 85 wasn't extremely different from my 55, so I ended up buying the 105 1.4 as a special portrait/headshot lens. I couldn't be happier with it's performance (this focal lens truly creates some unique images instead of traditional 85 mm images with the compression and backg. blur) and I like the big size. Even if this sounds stupid, but it is totally true that photographers that haven't built up their reputation yet impress clients with big gear. I haven't had a single client that hasn't commented over the lens and that's positive since they pay and expect you to use serous gear, and the 105 mm filter thread does indeed look serous and overkill.

Adrian D I agree I just got mine last week I normally shoot with the Zeiss batis 85. my first shoot with the 105 Wowwwww me, the sharpness and the way the background melts away is so unique

the real question is would you pick the Sigma 105 or the sony 135?

You must have gotten ahold of a bad copy of the 105, mine is quick to focus, even in low light on my a7riii. Definitely also disagree on the size being so much bigger than other portrait lens. Maybe if you shoot with 50mm - 85mm the 105 1.4 seems HUGE, but photographers like myself that regularly shoot with 135mm, 70mm - 200mm or even the MASSIVELY HEAVY 200 f2 don't notice anything particularly impressive about the size or weight of the Sigma 105 1.4.

FYI, LowePro Protactic 450AW takes this lens no problem. I pack it along with the 35/50/85mm Art Sigmas plus another 85mm lens and two flashes plus camera body and grip.

I'm using my old Nikkor 105. Small, manual only with great results on my aps cams. Probably nowhere near this good but well, pretty darn good.

It does come with a rubber cover that slips over the nuts. You should have had one in the package. I have one of these for sony also.

Two mistakes: there is a Nikon version of 105/1.4 and there is a rubber collar that covers the space of the tripod collar making it look "sharp".

I believe Sigma makes faster focusing sports lenses, the 105mm 1.4 is an Art series lens.

yes. much. I love my 135mm 1.8 and haven't shot with the 105mm since i've had it.

I think the review is OK but I’ve seen big photographers like Brandon Cole Photography and Manny use the 105 in several photoshoots on their channel and they talk about how fast and sharp it is.

Where? I've used mine indoors for jobs at churches, reception halls, all around a college campus, hospitals, etc. Lots of times my frame of reference is moving subjects. That's where this lens suffers in speed. It's very possible that the difference in opinion lies strictly in the type of photography we do. Static portraits in bright outdoor conditions, sure, it's quick. Still not nearly as fast as other lenses, but everything is so fast these days that hardly means anything. Sharpness. It's extremely sharp, I explained that well. I crown it alongside my 50 1.4 as the best at rendering detail in my bag. But, that is restricted by the lens less-than-perfect accuracy and speed.

sigma art beat nikon ,much sharper then nikon 105

Not much sharper just a little sharper but the sigma is about 100mm while the Nikon is an actual 105mm and that also plays a part in why people think the sigma is “much” sharper but when both framed the same it’s just slightly sharper and you have to look at 1:1 to tell.. But nikons bokeh is smoother and rendering is much better it’s lighter and no focus issues to worry about.. I’ll take the Nikon over the sigma any day.

While I think it's a comically ugly lens and my three friends that have one all look silly, the images are nice indeed.
