The main reason to use this lens for me is that close headshots look most natural at 105mm. 85mm looks a bit unnaturally close and 135 already a bit flat. But that is a matter of taste. If you mainly shoot outddoor protraits the 135 is a fantastic alternative. The tiny differences in optical quality are hard to notice on real life photos. They are all outstanding at 45 mpx.

The 135mm f/1.8 is smaller, lighter, produces equivalent bokeh (slightly more cat's eye but same softness and blur with the same framing) and is also less expensive. I know Dustin had some sharpness issues with his copy but mine is absolutely tack sharp at 1.8. For 700 USD off eBay and with an MC-11 adapter giving me Eye-AF on the A7III and IBIS I have no issues. Unless you are in love with 105mm specifically, or need the extra 2/3 a stop of light, the 135 will be much easier to carry and hold. Notes for those who are curious: 1. For some reason Sigma hasn't updated their adapter to allow for Auto stabilization to work. When stabilization is turned on it detects the lens and defaults to Auto mode, however this does nothing. When zooming to 100% in the viewfinder and half pressing the shutter button the image is still super shaky, yet if I change the stabilization mode to manual and set it to 135mm the stabilization works VERY well. It cannot get rid of big shakes or movement but it completely erradicates micro vibrations. I can shoot at 1/60 and get perfectly sharp (not just acceptably sharp) images if I am using proper technique. 2. I have tested the bokeh balls of the 135 and it creates completely round circles up to f2.5. At f2.8 the 9 aperture blades just barely appear in specular highlights. Just figured I would put this info out there because this isn't listed in specs but definitely affects shooting. Also, just to be clear, I see this as a positive considering many lenses show the aperture blades at anything besides wide open whereas the 135 can stop down 1 full stop before they appear at all.

I agree with this on some levels, but I think the biggest advantage of this lens is that 105mm is simply a more flexible focal length than 135mm. There are many situations where 135m is simply too long. If you got your 135 for $700, however, that is an amazing deal for a fantastic lens. BTW - I reviewed a second copy of the 135 that was MUCH sharper.

I think the degree of separation (bokeh pattern) is pretty much identical to the SIGMA 135mm f1.8 if you were to shoot the same framing, of course the background compression will appear closer on the 135mm

Yes, I am "fighting the impulse" myself although the cost does make it somewhat easy to do so. The look of some of those outdoor portraits with your daughter have an almost post-processed look to them that is very impressive. In my opinion the 105mm is the least sharp lens of the lenses that are known to be sharp. It's strange, because I've compared this so the underrated Sigma 40mm F1.4 and the difference in microcontrast is HUGE. The 40 destroys the 105. To the point where it looks almost like a LUT was already applied lol. But also resolution favors the 40mm. This was only on a 6k video test. Meaning the 105mm in my experience doesnt even fully render 6k at F1.4. I've done multiple retests to see if I missed focus, but it all came out the same. It's strange to me because the MTF chart drastically favors the 105, and everyone says the 105 is very sharp, but when I really look at these demos, it doesnt look particularly sharp tbh. As you noted, it lost on microcontrast, but I think people intuitively expect resolution to be better than it is too, and give it a little bit of a pass.
@DustinAbbottTWI
@DustinAbbottTWI 8 ай бұрын
That’s interesting. But I’ve heard directly from Sigma that the 40mm is one of their best. It’s actually a Cine design.
@CanditoTrainingHQ
@CanditoTrainingHQ 8 ай бұрын
@@DustinAbbottTWI Yeah it's insane. The 105 still is sharp dont get me wrong, and with more testing I dont think the resolution is as much the difference as that micocontrast. I'll do a 100 MP pixel shift test later on to see, but Ive seen the 105 stand up to 42 MP tests so I probably was overreacting on the 6k point. But the 40 is just on a different class as you said. First time ive ever tangibly saw a difference in captured dynamic range detail, since the specular highlight details don't smudge and detail in the shadows literally shows up on waveforms with more ridges than the 105. Incredible.

It’s hard to compare them in some ways because of the two stop difference in aperture. The Batis is very, very good (and infinitely more reasonable in size!), but f/2.8 just isn’t going to give the same kind of separation.

Wong, head over to: www.lenstip.com/535.1-Lens_review-Sigma_A_105_mm_f_1.4_DG_HSM.html This will give you a comparison on resolution wise to the 135. They are both really hair close. I picked up the 105 1.4 art after testing it out compared to the 135 1.8 art. The 105 was just much more practical to me. The 135 is somewhat more of an outdoor lens. What puts the 105 1.4 art aside is the performance you get at 1.4 which is just incredible. By F/2 the 135 does beat the 105 and the 85 sigma art series. Also the CA and vignetting on the 105 is noticably less. The magnification and bit closer focusing of the 135 is great for headsho. Dustin did an awesome review of the 105 masterpiece :) It is truly a photographers gem of a lens that is specialized for portraits. Made me fall in love testing it so I had to pick it up. Kinda wish the 135 came with a tripod collar. I get a bit nervous putting my camera with a heavier lens on a tripod without a tripod collar on the actual lens. There is also this great comparison: photographylife.com/sigma-85mm-f1-4-vs-105-f1-4-vs-135-f1-8-art-comparison

All that glass gets rid of any CA, but I really find that all the Art series lenses just look so clinical and don't produce the 3d pop look we love in portrait lenses like the milvus or the Canon 135.

Another excellent roundup Dustin, and nice to include the Milvus 135mm, You can really see that the new Sigma is a superb in what it does, sharpness between the two lenses is almost admissible. Reading through the specs from Sigma, they wanted to get as close to the Zeiss 135mm Milvus in every way, especially for astro work, well they have nearly done it, however, you can see the Zeiss colour coming through in the portrait shots in that, as you say, globally the Zeiss colour is slightly stronger and more accurate then the Sigma which has colour shift from f1.4-f2, but at the end of the day the Sigma have produced a real winner here!
@DustinAbbottTWI
@DustinAbbottTWI 6 жыл бұрын
In an absolute sense I still favor the Milvus, but the reality is that I would get more keepers with the Sigma. I often use the Milvus on my Sony body for that reason, as I almost never miss a shot with Sony’s extra MF features.

I may be wrong on this one, but based on my data I landed into "how much blur" the canon 85 1.2 would have more blur ability with backgrounds closer than 30m ( from the camera) with a subject framed loosely. With a subject framed tightly however( head and shoulders), the advantage of the of the 85 1.2 becomes defeated by the 105f/1.4 with backgrounds 7m or farther from the camera. my understanding of it is fast apertures blur better with close backgrounds/loosley framed subjects. Longer focal length blurs stronger with far away backgrounds/tightly framed subjects. I just love discussing lens theory with other people haha! nice video as usual.
@DustinAbbottTWI
@DustinAbbottTWI 5 жыл бұрын
My depth of field calculator says that the 85mm F1.2 would have a DOF of 3.65" at 10 feet. The DOF shrinks to 2.79" at the same distance with the Sigma 105 at F1.4.

The lens looks awesome. Personally I shoot more outside and most of the times space is not a big issue for me. So I may tend towards the Sigma 135mm for Sony. It costs less, it's lighter and it seems to have even more "pop" than this one. But Sigma is doing an awesome job!
@DustinAbbottTWI

If you have room, the classic 135mm focal length is fantastic for portraiture. If you shoot both inside and out, or in smaller venues, the 105mm is the more flexible tool.

Epic Lens and Review! I can relate why everybody goes after these Nikon and Sigma 105‘s! But in terms of how images look, the 105 reminds me a bit of my old 50 Art which images were technically brilliant, but never didn’t transport the right feeling! All I can say in terms of sharpness, contrast and even Bokeh they are definitely a match even for Zeiss Lenses and sometimes even better! But they don’t carry „Art“ in their images and that’s were even the old Canon L lenses have the upper Hand. Or look at the inferior Milvus50, it has so wonderful colors! Can you rent the Nikon 105 adapted and test it against the Sigma on Sony? I heard it performs quite well against the Sigma! Maybe you can test them on a Sony, I wonder how Nikon lenses perform on an adapter:-) Thanks for your hard work! Always love to watch your content! Best Christian

I've been following your channel for some time and I do like the thought and detail that goes into these videos. Far more in depth than most reviewers. Thanks from me to your daughter too. I'm sure most teenage girls would sooner be out with their friends but here she is posing patiently once more for yet another lens review!. So I'll admit to being tempted to buy one of these lenses for my Canon 5d, despite the mammoth size and weight of it. I do have one question though. Is it too sharp? We all like a lens to be sharp but when shooting portraits I think there is a point where sharpness and detail can distract from the image as a whole. For example. I used a Sigma 85 1.4 Art on a Nikon D800 body and the sharpness and detail that lens could render along with the 36mb camera sensor sometimes had me needing to dull it down some in post. I think sometimes a lens/camera combo can be a little too much in as much as it will pick out every tiny flaw in your subjects face.
@DustinAbbottTWI
@DustinAbbottTWI 3 жыл бұрын
That's a fair perspective, though I would counter that by saying that it is easier to reduce sharpness than it is to add it back in. At the end of the day, though, your tastes may run to a lens with more rendering quality than absolute sharpness. A lens like the 85mm F1.2L II or 135mm F2L might be better options if you are genuinely concerned over that.

As always great review. I have never been a fan of the micro contrast of Sigma lenses and this seems to follow the pattern, they just lack pop compared with Tamron and Zeiss primes (Nikkor are so all over the place you have to go by the individual lens).

Stellar review. Great lens--no CA and no vignette and great AF--but light transmission seems mediocre overall. Colors look grayish/greenish to me. For a lens that size it has to knock everything out of the park, including sharpness and t-stop. Compared to the Nikon 105mm 1.4 it didn't seem to offer any advantage really, and is much heavier. Still a nice effort from Sigma.
@DustinAbbottTWI
@DustinAbbottTWI 6 жыл бұрын
The color rendition is open to debate, of course, as it is somewhat subjective. I do favor the Zeiss look. As for the comparison to the Nikkor lens, I hope that someone who is a Nikon shooter does a substantive comparison.

I would consider this Sigma if the filter ring is not 105mm because I shoot video and needed filters and you cant find many if any that size. Other tests seem to suggest it focus wider than 105mm so maybe a 100mm which is not that far off 85mm which I think would be a closer test than a 135mm. I wish Zeiss bring out a Milvus 105mm f1.4 with 82mm filter thread.

@filmfreek35
@filmfreek35 6 жыл бұрын
jeffry de meyer the 300mm will give you more background compression than the 105. If you shoot portraits, 300mm is not ideal due to the working distance. The 105 is ideal for portraits because of the lowlight capabilities at f1.4 and the closer working distance.
@jeffrydemeyer5433
@jeffrydemeyer5433 6 жыл бұрын
yes the difference seems quite a lot now that i look at it in a dof caluclator. The working distance isn't that much of an issue if you are shooting something like a golfer

@filmfreek35 6 жыл бұрын
jeffry de meyer if you shoot Sony you can activate Super 35 (Crop sensor mode) that will give you 157mm or reach. I ordered mine because the F.1.4 max apature will allow great low light performance. I think your 300mm f2.8 might be better suited for you. 😊
@DustinAbbottTWI
@DustinAbbottTWI 6 жыл бұрын
Not really. Even a 135mm f/2 actually has a more shallow DOF, but not enough to be meaningful. 300mm is not an optimal portrait focal length, though, as it tends to really compress features.

I know this is an old video, but did you end up buying the lens? I am considering thid pens for portraits. I love the 105-135mm perspective and it seems like this lens really ticks about all the right boxes. There is just one thing, colors seem to be rather flat and tint towards warm tones, which is typical of sigma lenses I guess. By comparison, the tamron 85mm f1.8 is lighter, smaller and has much more attractive and neutral colors. Though the 85mm focal length never seems to render faces the way a longer lens would.

@Trade_raptor
@Trade_raptor 6 жыл бұрын
I rented the 105mm Art and tested it against the 135L and the 85mm Art. The Canon had faster focus and the bokeh was close to being just as creamy as the 105mm. However, the 105mm is such a clinically sharp lens and the contrast destroys the 135L. If you didn't know, with the 135L you have to have the lens hood on or light will bounce around and cause a haze in your images. This you can use creatively if you like. In the end, if you are thinking about the 135L, I would go with the Sigma 135 f1.8. That is superior to the canon (just not in price!).
@DustinAbbottTWI
@DustinAbbottTWI 6 жыл бұрын
I don’t do comparisons to the 135L anymore because in most of the ways you can compare lenses it gets demolished by modern glass. The 135L is still a special lens, but it’s specialness is more in the look of the images than in something you can measure.

On the barrel, as in a rear filter system, or a traditional screw-in filter? If it is the latter, any 105mm filter will work. They are a bit expensive, but that's your best option. 105mm UV Filters from Hoya or Sigma come for $249 & it's like buying another lens with this ART. So if you could recommend a cheaper brand ! How is NiSi ? Nikkor 105/1.4E is an OEM lens for Nikon users, but Sigma is a lot cheaper. Saw a Review (don't remember whose), comparing the two, and in their tests, nikon was better in some aspects and equal in others, and ART was better in some departments, but despite the ART having 3 more elements for correction, and a much larger front element to reduce vignetting, .... so, i was surprised that Nikon held its own, if not better in Toto, than ART. Yes it's made in China (with cheap plastic/rubbery gear-mechanism or micro-motors etc.), while ART is made in Japan. Thanks.
