The fake ending is actually genius. On my first run I was just flabbergasted and wanted to see if they're for real, so I started the game again, immediately noticing something's different. On my second run though, I wanted to exit the game after the fake ending, but the game doesn't let you. It doesn't matter what you click, it goes straight to the game again, and continues with the Penrose memory.

The cool thing about some of it's references is that they can be taken in pretty interesting ways. The King In Yellow wasn't just horror stories, one of them was an outright alternate history fiction where America became a fascist dystopia with suicide booths. The King In Yellow showing up doesn't just mean "Hey look at this cool reference" it can also mean "This story is set in the same universe as The King In Yellow, which in-universe is a play that gives people insane insight into reality"

Note that the fascist dystopia America portrayed in the book is entirely in the perspective of a person who is absolutely mentally unwell from a brain injury and should not be trusted in the slightest.

It feels like what pat is trying to say at the end is what I've experienced a lot when working on art. Some time's you can see the completed picture in your head right from the start and you can complete the piece in no time at all. That's what signalis or hollow knight feel like. The devs had a very clear idea of what they wanted to make and executed on it.

There's something that I missed out on as a kid that Signalis has managed to retroactively instill in me today. Remember Silent Hill? 1, 2, 3, 4, take your pick. Remember when you were younger and you found that game to be petrifyingly scary? How it riddled you with a sense of anxiety and foreboding just by walking around and looking at things? Signalis did that to me in its very first moments of play. Having only experienced Silent Hill when I was older, and hearing from people like Pat during the SBFP run of how its horror held up, I was sad that I didn't get any of that--I mostly found playing a game like SH2 extremely comforting. Initially, I was pretty confident that a lower poly, pixelated game like this would not be very scary, despite how beautifully rendered it is. Doing the point-and-click first person POV parts of Signalis are some of the most nerve-wracking things I've played, because absolutely nothing is going to happen to you, but you will NEVER not _FEEL_ like something will happen. And in that moment I feel like I understood the childhood you that played Silent Hill.

Honestly the aesthetics of these graphical generations were edged out the door far too soon. The Indie crew have been making legendary pixel games for over a decade now, and games like Hollow Knight that have a contemporary look for a classic formula still fit that Super Nintendo era vibe. I'm glad to see folks moving into the PS1 era of low poly oozing with soul. Art being forced into a certain aesthetic style of perfect photo-realism by Paul Marketing has been driving the industry into the dirt.

Signalis can be somewhat scary, but then I see the "hot anime girl" faces and every single time, I have to snicker at how super they don't fit the tone of the game and the scare factor goes back down to zero 🤣 Not to mention all the stuff stolen from other games and anime, which is so ridiculously blatant, that I have to roll my eyes every time I see another one. And they are EVERYWHERE. This game could have been a lot scarier if it had done more of its own thing and hadn't chosen "hot anime girls" as their art direction.

@@slaps9402 I'm left genuinely wondering if the Isa you meet over the course of the game is even the same Isa Ariane knew, or if there isn't just an Isa Itou series Gestalt unit in production behind the scenes, and there's just an Ayanami Rei tank full of Isas somewhere. No one uses the term "Human" at any point to describe anyone.
@ajch22 Жыл бұрын
@@riddlemethat5597 9 months late, but I'm pretty sure it is implied that Isa was already dead from the start of the game. The Isa we see is not a Gestalt either, my understanding is that Ariane, in an attempt to find someone that could save her, brought Isa into her world, the problem being that Ariane seems to get Isa and Erika confused most of the time and brought the wrong sister.

If we're talking about small amount of developers with a really good game, Stardew Valley was created by a single person named Eric Barone. The man was a fan of the Harvest Moon series, until he found the games were getting "progressively worse". The only rational solution in the mind of Eric Barone: Make your own Harvest Moon-like game. As sole developer he made literally everything: the game's pixel art, music and sound effects, and story and dialogue. First game he ever developed, and it is just fucking fantastic.

Thinking about the talk of the game being iterated on, and I can't help but think about the fact that the eye and flashlights are inventory items, but not the radio. Which makes me think there was a version of this game where you had to lug around a radio alongside your flashlight and weapons

Agreed, the only change I'd propose would be that the item in your Tech slot isn't taking space in your inventory. By the time the Flashlight rolls around everything else that can go there feels awful to use, and that one extra slot I feel would help to incentivize running around with spare thermite or stun prods more without really giving you a true seventh slot.
