The fact that this woman-child put so much thought and care into this prank shows that it was malicious, pre-meditated, and was done knowing that certain outcomes would happen. She went to their home. Brought scissors. Took her nail polish off. Got a new phone number. Took pictures. Created the fake texts. That’s all signs of crazy person. I do not think that OP should have apologized. I’m almost always a “take the high road” person, but was SIL did was disgusting and cruel. OP comments to her are not even in the same stratosphere. Let’s say, for arguments sake, that OP said some horribly nasty things…. All of the things OP said were heat-of-the-moment in response to what SIL did and the mental re-traumatization she put OP through. If that’s what OP needed to do to help her own healing, then I will respect her choices. Good for Aaron being there for his wife, and I hope SIL and MIL get their karma

I would have been furious as I have been stalked twice and both times I felt so vulnerable and the one I was threatened by him and he would follow me home. My bosses husband joked (not knowing about the situation) that there was a guy outside waiting for me. I just broke down crying. He did go out and gave him a good "talking" and he never bothered me again. *Btw the first guy eventually just stopped. I am not that proud that I didn't stick up for myself but I totally can relate to the gal.

This makes me think of how disconnected people of privilege and/or wealth are to such a degree that in their level of 'boredom' they believe a blatant act of TERRORISM is a joke in their and other's eyes. Worse yet, they refuse accountability and play victim when the consequences of their actions come for them. Like all the things she could've did, she went through efforts to really make this look legit that folks should check on her mental.

Aaron is a real one for taking _none_ of that bullcrap and assuring OP that she doesn't need to apologize. I can't imagine either that it wasn't traumatic on some level for him, too, to be told to barricade himself in his house, due to a crazy stalker with scissors being outside to get his wife. A stalker like that would have every reason to want to hurt the perceived "other man" for sure, and had it been a real scenario, Aaron would've surely been in danger and you never know whether someone like that is armed with worse than scissors.

As a dude, if you get close stalker boy might get jealous and go after her or you. As a chick, what if you're next? Likely she got the scandal, but also a lot of people avoiding her for fear of being caught in the crossfire. The fact her own family saw it wasn't "just a prank that got out of hand" screams volumes. "Sophie" is lucky it was still in the OP's hands not to press charges, because I have little doubt she would have taken it far enough where cops would be able to file charges all on their own. The "retort" is mildly bad, but that happens when gaslighting goes too far. She has gotten so used to getting her way with gaslighting everyone. "Nadia" is about the only one with an objective POV, and the fact the OP apologized for a specific thing is the only thing the OP should be sorry for. The MIL even trying to defend "Sophie" makes me suspect she had something to do with the prank as well.

Funny how people are quick to call something cruel or mean a prank when they notice everyone isn't laughing and faced with the immediate consequences in public. I love when super spoiled adults face the consequences of being stupid. 1) "I shouldn't have to beg for forgiveness when my apology was implied" good luck trying to spin that narrative in court or to the police. 2) "if you have nothing nice to say don't say anything at all. You're as bad as I am if you do" so why did you think furthering harassing the victim of your stupid prank was a good idea if you didn't want your feelings hurt? Oh right. She's a narcissist and freaking out by the fact the family is dethroning her spoiled princess status. I'm really disappointed with op apologizing. Giving narcissists an inch will allow them to try and take a mile. The only thing sophie was sorry about was the fact this created such a backlash against her, not the fact she hurt someone.

It's the gaslighting in top of it all for me. She shouldn't have done that in the first place, obviously. She should have (very publicly - social media?) explained exactly what she did, why it was wrong and made a very public apology with efforts to make it up to her with OP's input and except all consequences. AND done so before it spread because it was going to spread anyway and ppl would need to know to some degree that something has happened so the two don't mix again. That would have shown remorse and character.

She only apologized for calling SIL fat not about everything else. That s good enough. You dont have to be so cold and revengeful absolutely to everything. Calling doing what s right "doormat" would question your compassion and understanding to others.

She felt bad for insulting her appearance, which was wrong of her, no matter how angry she was. You can acknowledge your mistakes without forgiving the person that hurt you. We all do things we regret when we're extremely angry and upset. The reason why OP felt guilty and unsure about insulting her SiL's appearance was because she felt like it betrayed herself. She knows first hand how much it can hurt to have your appearance insulted, and she did it to someone else in a moment of rage. That's why she feels bad about what she said. It's incredibly immature and close minded to call someone a doormat for wanting to apologize for doing something wrong. In the end, OP put her foot down and didn't forgive her SiL for what she did to OP and cut SiL out of her life, so I'm not sure what you're on about by calling OP a doormat.

This is the type of prank that wouldn't be funny even if someone had never dealt with a stalker. Doing it to someone who has is just evil. Also, choices that require this much work and planning are not "small mistakes". She got a different number, went to her house, took a picture there, went home, crafted the messages, sent them to herself, screenshot the messages, and sent them with additional commentary. That's a lot of work! A small mistake is spilling coffee on someone's carpet, not actively working to traumatize them. Then, she proceeded to harass OP endlessly. OP didn't overreact. The idea of "being a bigger person" goes out the window when it doesn't work. If someone will not stop, sometimes you have to stoop to their level and make them stop. Also, the woman is THIRTY. This isn't even a case of "teenager being insensitive not thinking about consequences". I am also thirty and I cannot IMAGINE doing something so cruel. How is that funny? How does that benefit her? It costs $0 and takes zero effort to not harass and traumatize people. Edit: it's completely fair for OP wanting to apologize for the weight comment. I think she was completely fair to make it, but I also get why she felt bad about it.

Op is a good person. I'm fat so I didn't like the attack on weight but understood they were angry. I don't care if I'm called fat. It's other things like comparing me to animals that I'm not okay with. I don't tell skinny people they look like stick bugs or ferrets. It's equally insulting
