They weren't a 'hit machine'... their first album was of course gargantuan, but the second album so long in coming was nowhere near as good. Yes crap, the 'band' was not the actual guys who supposedly played on the album. I saw them in concert. Not so good.

@@townhall05446of course there second and third album weren't as good. Nobody's album was as big of a hit as their first album. Not even bands like Led Zeppelin or Aerosmith or any of them. That is the problem with having the biggest selling album ever, especially when it's your debut album. You can't top it. Boston's second and third albums were just fine. It was just impossible to top their first album. Other bands were not expected to sound like Boston and therefore it was easier to move along even though they could not top the Boston album. But Boston was expected to somehow top their own album.

Every. Single. Cut. ... on this album is fire. It was Summer between fresh & soph year in college when this came out, and when I got back to campus, this stuff was flying out of every dorm and apartment, and at every party. Couldn't get away from it if you wanted to... and we didn't want to. The music carries a lot of positivity - even more than the lyrics - and just has an uplifting effect. Smokin' & Rock & Roll Band are up next, and again you won't be disappointed. Legendary debut album! Couldn't get away from 3 bands during the mid to late 70's: Fleetwood Mac, Boston & Earth, Wind & Fire. The music was so good back then, nothing really to compare it with in today's corporate BS radio.... I mean, I find a lot of great tracks from today's bands/artists through independent sources, as well as YT... but the singers/songwriters who were part of the great 60's/70's bands were going for epic, going for big airplay & big money... and that motivation drove the market. But sooo glad you're walking this path, along with a lot of other reactors - getting a new experience and learning about the great music of the past, which you all are bringing to the newer generations.

The air itself was energized and electrified with music our parents just couldn't understand. My Dad was born in 1912 - that is 110 years ago! Mom was born in '21, that's just over a century. So imagine this, my young dude: a bunch of us had just gone down to the record store at the mall after being told about this album from some friend's cousin or something out on the East Coast. W buy this vinyl and we bring it back to my buddy's bedroom that had walls that were painted black and covered in these black felt posters with florescent images like chameleons inside tesseracts floating in space, alien solar systems, spaceships, nad hot rod cars everywhere. We think approvingly that the album art fits in rather well with the decor. He turns on the black light bulb on the ceiling that bathes everything in an eerie purplish glow and these images all spring to glowing life...right as this very song emanates from the big speakers attached to his turn table and washes over us as we reclined on the many bean bag chairs spread corner-to-corner in his room. This was early 1977 for me and my friends. I was going to turn 12 years old in a couple of weeks. This was my favorite present, I think. Remember this story when you see a bunch of white-haired old dudes nodding their heads in their old cars going down the road too slowly, and think to yourself: "I wonder if he's just cruisin' and listening to Boston and thinking back on some good scenes in his life from a long time ago..." 💝☮

I'm 62 now, this came out when I was 16. It's still blowing people's minds 46 years later; that's what makes a timeless song. And realize that this was made decades before ProTools and AutoTune, on 1/4" reel-to-reel tape. No digital editing available. They played the music live in the studio direct to tape. And, on top of that, the lead guitarist is an MIT grad that majored in physics, was working as a product engineer for Kodak, the camera film company. He played ALL the instruments except drums, and a friend from another band did ALL the vocals. HE recorded, mixed, and produced it himself IN HIS BASEMENT, with most of the effects he designed and built himself. Only thing he bought was an 8 channel ANALOG mixing board. The guy was a total genius.

@289hipo Tom used a Sculley 12 track one inch tape machine to record the tracks that he submitted for this record. Scholz actually graduated from MIT with a masters in mechanical engineering and Scholz worked for Polaroid but still a camera and film company. All of Brads vocals sans Let Met Take You Home which was written by Brad were recorded by producer John Boylan at Capital Studios Studio C. The entire song Let Me Take You Home was recorded by the band as pictured on the back of the record. This record was mixed at Westlake Studios by producer John Boylan, Engineer Warren Dewey and Tom with assistance from Steve Hodges. It is well known that Tom used a Dan Flickinger console to record the tracks that he submitted for this record are you sure it was only an 8 channel console? It would make much more sense for the console to be a 12 channel or more or a 24 channel. Also Tom most certainty did not play all of the instrumental tracks on this record. Foreplay and Long Time heavily feature the guitar work of Barry G. Fran is playing bass on Foreplay and Let Me Take You Home. Brad is playing acoustic guitar on Let Me Take You Home and Barry plays electric rhythm, slide and lead guitar on Let Me Take You Home Brad was not a friend from another band. Brad sang on multiple demos for Tom and played in band with Tom years before this record was made. Barry met Tom when Tom auditioned to play keyboards in Barrys band. Barry introduced Brad to Tom not long after that time. Barry, Brad, Jim Masdea and Tom played in bands and did demos of Toms songs years before this record was made and released.

They were able to pull off the sound they got in the studio live, and Brad Delp really could sing that high. The main problem Boston had as a band was that the first album was so strong, it was almost impossible to top it. Their second album, 1978’s “Don’t Look Back” was okay, but nowhere near as great as their debut. The public waited until 1986 for the 3rd Boston album, called “Third Stage”, but it was only okay. oh man I loved this song in High school. wow, 1981 in my first car... learning how to party. (Wisconsin, we start drinking early in life.) haha Bought an amp and speakers for my dodge, blew them out in a month.

It’s sooooo fun watching your appreciation level for REAL music that was written and performed with talent and creativity, back when there was variety with different groups. Today so much sounds the same same same and rather drab to me. You still have a lot to discover! 😊

We all knew this was coming...😁 I personally have seen a ton of different reactors and NONE have the true passion and feel the music as much as Silas does. It's just genuine and refreshing to see. Silas - Led Zeppelin is my all-time favorite band, I'll be curious where you rank this album (not band) as a debut and overall when you get to that point. I hope you remember this comment when you finish the Boston rabbit hole!

Agreed! Totally! God, the music really moves him (spiritually AND physically)! It's energizing watching Silas react to Boston! I can't way to see him react to Don't Look Back and Third Stage. Heh heh... Seriously...I laughed with him, and he really entertained. Plus, it's just great to see OUR music making such an impact. And not just with him! The reactions to this one particularly are abundant, and about as entertaining!

Best reaction to Boston that I've seen. I've viewed many. Loved yours the most. So refreshing to see young people react. Keep going. It only gets better with Boston. The whole group was awesome. Tom Sholtz is a genius. Recorded in his basement.

Thank you for reaction..yes us old folks..heard it hundred times, but watching a young man , react now, as we did back in the day, gives and old dude hope! Lol Ps IM AN AIR GUITAR Wizard... I have broken many tennis racket strings to this song!

R.I.P. Brad Delp, one of the best rock vocalists of all time. Him and Freddie probably. I hope high school freshmen will be forever discovering Boston and scrawling the album art across their binders. Do kids even have binders anymore?

Now imagine hearing this in 1976. It was unlike anything else and the level of polish was mind-blowing.

My favorite rock n roll song ever, and I think the greatest. Good news Silas, you can hear it 1000 times and you will still have near the same reaction. It truly has everything.

Every time I listen to Boston I feel nostalgia for the 70’s. Which is strange because I was born in the 80’s.

Boston was the first band I ever saw in concert. It was the fall of 1978 when 3 of my college buddies and I drove 70 miles to see this show. Sammy Hagar was the warm-up act. I hadn't heard of him back then but he put on a good show. There was about a 20 minute pause between acts and then Boston came out playing "Rock And Roll Band", a story about the rise of the band. That song and "Smokin'" are a couple of my Boston favorites and would make great reactions.

Just today, I was walking up the parking lot of Bridger Bowl ski hill. Two college age guys were pulling gear out of their rig. Doors open and back hatch up and this album was playing at 11! It made me very happy. Saw these guys twice. My hearing has never been the same since. My ears rang for 2 weeks. They were the loudest recorded live act back in the 70's.

Silas, you should have seen these guys in concert...man...the wild wood weed flowed freely both times I saw them back in the 70's...now THOSE were concerts...Rock ON!!!
