If any of you are wondering why there are weird vertical lines in the Genesis version, it's so the colors would be blended on a composite TV. The Genesis didn't have a very big color palette to work with compared to the SNES or even the Amiga, so the illusion of more colors could be created this way.
@mr_wildschwein Жыл бұрын

Whatever trickery they used, it worked, as the colors actually look much better on the Genesis than they do on the SNES.

It's called dithering. The MegaDrive/ Genesis would use this to fake extra colors and transparencies. A CRT TV would blend the colors together to simulate these effects.

The Amiga has a palette of 16,777,216 colours which is 16,744,448 more colors than SNES. Using standard resolutions together with blitter and copper, it is possible to display thousands of colours on screen without any slowdown. Using ham mode, it is possible to display 18bit screens and using faster processors, it is even possible to play movies in ham modes without much artifacts using different methods. So it is not logical to say "The Genesis didn't have a very big color palette to work with compared to the SNES or "even the Amiga". Amiga is master race here.

This is hard. Technically the Snes sounds the best out of the three, but the Mega Drive's FM Ocelator makes the music sound so freaking good that I actually prefer it for every level except Elephant Graveyard. In terms of Audio, Amiga wins Elephant Graveyard. Visually, the Amiga has the best looking opening, and a lot of better looking sprites, but much like the SNES, they seem washed out and less vibrant. The MD's sprites are more compressed and pixelated, but the colors just pop out at you. However, the Volcano level looks miles better on MD. The lava effects alone beat the other two. Voices sound better on SNES. Amiga also seems to have some performance issues, but having never tried that version, it could just be a video issue. I would have to say MD is the better version of the three, but the SNES makes a strong case
@paul1979uk20008 жыл бұрын
if the performance issues you are talking about are the judder thats happening on the Amiga version, thats most likely because this youtube clip is running at 60hz whereas the Amiga version of the game was at 50hz, I remember the game being slick smooth. I have the three versions myself plus the PC one as well. The Amiga has resolution, color and sound but misses a few animations and sound effects and slows down quite often. The Mega Drive/Genesis has resolution, contrast and responsiveness but the sound really isn't the best. The Snes has color and sound but slows down a bit for a few times and also feels the less responsive. I'd say the best one is the Mega Drive/Genesis version because the game itself plays better.
@paul1979uk20005 жыл бұрын
The Snes was know for slowing down a lot with many games, the Mega Drive didn't have the sound or colours like the Amiga could do and I think if it was a well optimised port and the game was complete, the A1200 version likely would have been the best. I say that because the A1200 could do the same amount of colours the Snes could but also had a lot more colours it could use over the Snes, the sound chip even though the Snes was better by having more channels, it doesn't seem to matter for this kind of game so both could have sounded the same. Unfortunately, the game was done in a short space of time for the Amiga version and likely wasn't as optimised as well as the other two and hence why it was missing levels even thought it seem like they ware done but wasn't in the game.

Overview of each versions: - Amiga (btw it's an Amiga 1200 only game): proper resolution of 320x256 pixels albeit with a black border all around the screen (not totally noticeable here). Good graphics and scrollings. There are some performance issues (frame rate isn't optimal). Good audio but the sound is hard-panned (due to Amiga's limited amount of sound channels). Many levels are missing (due to storage constraints). The stages' name doesn't display when they start. Some visual effects are missing such as the flames @"Pride Rock" 35:57. - Mega Drive: proper resolution of 320x224 pixels without black border. Good graphics and excellent scrollings. Very good music, clear and warm with some lovely drums but some sound FX could have been better. I barely played this game but apparently this is the version that plays the best which is often the case when the Mega Drive is involved in these comparisons. - Super NES: flawed resolution of 256x224 pixels which causes limited screen estate (20% smaller than other versions) and stretched graphics with wrong aspect ratio once displayed in 4:3. Higher color depth than other versions but I prefer some color choices on Mega Drive such as the rock @title screen (1:19) or the water here: 19:41. Lacks some parallax scrollings as well as the line-scrolling effect on the water @"I Can't Wait To Be King" 5:40. Has a nice screen-shaking effect @"The Stampede" when the buffaloes are jumping over and which is lacking in the other versions. Some of the music are quite good but the overall quality is muffled and lacks punch. Also it's important to keep in mind that the slight color advantage on Super NES compared to the other versions is lessened once these systems are displayed on CRT screen - as intended - thanx to the scanlines and slight blur, all of which smoothes out the visuals. So, based on the video and the few that I played this game, here is how these three versions would rank: Mega Drive > Super NES > Amiga (but Amiga would have been 2nd best if it had all the levels) Another very well done video silenig. Thank you mate.

You missed PC DOS version. Every port of this game has it's own unique features, except Amiga one that's clearly inferior. Each one tries to work with each system limitations, except PC one that was clearly ported over from SNES and wasn't using PC capabilities at their full potential. Let's compare: 1. Resolution: SNES: 256x224 - lowest of all, you have limited view on every level, SEGA and Amiga: 320x240 - highest, square pixels for 4:3, PC: 320x200 - it uses same sprites as other version so can be played with 16:10 aspect ratio for square pixels. Best for widescreen monitors. 2. Colors: SNES: Max 256 colors at once from 15 bit palette, limit 16 color per sprite. Most of the times uses 128 or less colors. SEGA: 64 colors from 512 color palette. Game is more colorful, because Genesis palette lacked washed colors. AMIGA: 32 colors from 18-bit palette. Furthermore it was divided to 16 colors for foreground and 16 for background, because game used dual layers (4+4 = 8 bit) for parallax scrolling. Colors match those from SNES because of much wider palette than Genesis. The Stampede level has much more colors because there's no need for parallax and game works in 64 or 128 color mode in this level. PC: uses 256 color mode from 18-palette, but carries over SNES limitations. You can see dithering on almost every background even though there's only about 128 colors used from 256. PC's didn't have sprites so there wasn't limit to 16 colors per 16x16 pixel blocks. Title screen and other cut scenes are taken over from SNES and aren't full screen since 256 vs 320 width. Some sprites like Pumba were redone for PC without any dither. 3. Music: SNES: uses 6-7 voices and 8 is for sound effects. Sounds good, but low mixing resolutions is making sound dull. Genesis: this game brilliantly uses FM chip with 1 channel PCM. It's sounds great on Genesis, although it's still a FM music not as good for natural sounds used in lionking. Amiga: 4 channel PCM, it lacks 2 additional tracks from SNES but it's mixed at much higher resolution. 44 kHz mixing gives music a much more fidelity. PC: Well it has same music as Amiga and it's quality depends on the sound card used. Since Lionking on PC had very high requirements like fast 486 for 60+ fps, it could use 6-8 channel music from SNES. Also GUS could mix at least 16 channels in hardware with some DSP effects. By the time this game was released almost every PC had CD-ROM, so it could be a CD game with CD music. Final Thoughts: Genesis and SNES versions looks as most polished ones. Amiga was also good but suffered from hardware limitations. It's lacking 2 and 6 level, probably because it would require another diskette. It also suffers from long loading times like most Amiga games on floppies. PC port is probably the best for playing this game today. It supports widescreen and it can be easily run in DosBox. This port wasn't as polished as others and despite very high requirements (it required computer that could run some of the PSX era games) it carried over SNES limitations. This game should be given a modern remake, but with old pixel art graphics. Just give this game more colors and better music.
@valenrn86578 жыл бұрын
Your point for the Amiga is not correct. 2. Amiga has two versions i.e. AGA and non-AGA versions. Amiga with AGA chipset has 24bit (16 million) color palette. Without any color compression tricks, Amiga AGA can display 256 colors via it's 8 bit(256 color) bit plane registers. Search in KZbin for Lion King AGA Amiga OCS(Original Chipset) and ECS(Enhance Chipset) chipset has 12bit (4096) color palette. Without any color compression tricks, Amiga OCS/ECS can display 32 colors or 64 color (Halfbrite mode) via it's 6 bit plane registers.
@Leeki858 жыл бұрын
Ok, AGA has 24bit palette, but it actually doesn't really matter. 15, 18 or 24 bit palettes are visually equal when used in 256 color modes and on TVs. Although AGA can display 256 colors on screen at once, this mode was rarely used in games, because it was very slow. Also, as I mentioned earlier Lionking on Amiga used special mode that allowed for dual layers, but colors were further limited to two 16 color layers ( 4 bit + 4 bit = 8 bit). It was necessary for getting parallax scrolling. PC port uses 256 colors but everything is done in software. For smooth 60 fps you need a fast 486 CPU, way faster than CPU found in Amiga 1200. Lionking wasn't even using all the AGA features. Copper could push hundreds of colors in the background. Same goes for PC, where SNES limits were carried over. It was just a very basic console port. Consoles had common ground in displaying graphics. PCs and Amiga were different in their unique way. When programmed right games could achieve things impossible for consoles. Unfortunately there wasn't a lot of interest in making high quality ports for computers. At the time Lionking was released Amiga was pretty much dead as commercial platform and PCs were taking over. Given enough time Amiga port would be better and PC port would be superior to every other version, but it also was running on most expensive hardware. At least this port was on par with console versions, not the case of the NES era games:)

***** The problem with 256 colors is with disk storage not with graphics performance i.e. A1200 has zero improvements with disk storage relative to A500. A500 has 16bit bus for it's chipset that can sustain 6 bit plane (64 colors EHB) graphics draw while A1200 has 32bit bus for it's chip set that can sustain 8 bit plane (256 colors) graphics draw. The storage for 8 bit graphics data is larger than 5 or 6 bit graphics data and A1200 has zero improvements with disk storage relative to A500. CD32 has improved disk storage via CD for better 256 colors usage. A1200 can handle 256 colors Super Street Fighter 2 port, but it comes with many disk swapping. For 256 colors, it needs either hard drive or CD-ROM storage e.g. CD32 version SSF2T. Amiga's SSF2T needs 68030 accelerator. VGA wasn't optimized for scrolling type games, but it's chunky format design was ready for Doom type games. CD32 comes with planar-to-chunky converter but Commodore didn't increase 68020EC's clock speed. Motorola wasn't able to lower 68040's price relative to cheaper RISC CPUs e.g. SuperH. During the early 1990s, my parents has 386DX33 has Cirrus Logic GD5426 (i.e. same chipset as with Amiga's Picasso II add-on). Amiga's Pinball Illusions AGA is identical to PC VGA version. Motorola(expensive 68040 relative to falling 486 prices), PC's Doom and XOR patent killed Commodore-Amiga. Long term CPU partner with good road maps are important. Apple learnt the importance of CPU road maps and delivery with dead end Motorola 68K e.g. IBM PowerPC 970 wasn't pref/watt and pref/price competitive against Intel Core 2.
@DxDeksor7 жыл бұрын
VGA wasn't optimized for scrolling type games is true ... but as long as you CPU is fast enough to feed your video memory, you can do perfectly smooth scrolling. VGA graphics is more or less just a memory area where you tell the CPU to draw the picture in it which will be displayed on screen. Also, by 1994, the vas majority of VGA video cards were actually SVGA cards which supported higher res modes/color depht. In fact, I've only see once a VGA video card which had only 256KB of video memory (the bare minimum you needed to call your video card a VGA video card) and this was inside a laptop. Other than this, all the VGA expansion card I've seen were at least 512K. And even with 256KB of video memory, most SVGA card will be able to display 320*240 images with a 24bit color depht. However nobody did use this until the end of the pentium era, probably due to the fear of incompatibilities or that the game would require high-end CPUs to feed the VRAM fast enough

You know, I keep staring at the mega drive version and how much of the graphics has patterns of vertical lines in it... And I couldn't figure out why you'd draw it that way. Then I realised that this is either the output of an emulator, or RGB capture from a console. If you use composite out, adjacent pixels tend to blur together. And... Certain patterns end up looking like different intermediate colours. So in other words it's a trick to make it look like there are more colours than there really are, but it fails because it's not being shown through composite video...
@parallaxcraze9588 жыл бұрын
It's called dithering. Every systems up to the Nintendo 64 more or less use dithering. There are different kinds of dithering: checkered dithering, vertical dithering... Some dithering patterns are intended to be mixed together while others, not really. Personally I have most of my retro systems hooked in RGB (Amiga, Mega Drive, SNES...) so dithering patterns are always visible and I prefer this way since RGB gives better colors and these systems are meant to be played on CRT screen which smooth out the visuals (dithering included) with their scanlines (and scanlines can be reproduced on HD TVs or emulators by using filters).

The music on the MD/Genesis version seems slightly faster than the SNES version. There's a transition at 3:03 that highlights this. Also, I'm curious. Are you using real hardware or emulation? I took a look at another comparison (to try and compare music) on a channel named Game vs Game. I'm guessing he's using real hardware as he has the cartridges. In his video the colours/contrast looked more pleasing on the SNES whereas I favour the MD/Genesis version in your video (although the dithering is much more apparent).

@paul1979uk20005 жыл бұрын
@@colliric That was the case for many games on the Amiga and Snes, even thought the Snes had a better sound chip, the Amiga sounded better on a lot of games and that likely was because the Snes had limits in using 65k for sounds and cartridges was a premium, the Amiga had floppies which ware dirt cheap and if I recall, I think the Amiga didn't have any limits on how big songs could be and I do recall seeing songs being as big as 200k and 300k, even bigger so that will definitely sound better for the samples. Also, I think the A1200 could sound better then the A500 even thought it was technically the same sound chip.

@@paul1979uk2000 Commodore would still be around producing Amigas if they knew what they were doing. They had a gem like Amiga and they screwed up. Not improving the sound chip was just one mistake among loads of others. Games had content cut because Amiga had double density floppy disk as standard. They did not include fastmem which resulted in twice as much slow cpu speed. (amiga has two memory buses. Chipmem which can be accessed by all chips and fastmem which can only be accessed by cpu. adding only a few fastmem results in double speed). These are just some mistakes Commodore made.

Piece of jewel!!!! My first choice would be the Sega Genesis version. Those of us who know programming know and are very clear about the following: 1) the genesis had twice the processing power capacity of the snes. It is very fast and never slows down. It makes the game much smoother and more enjoyable to play 2) the famous mode 7 of the snes and the 3d rotations, the genesis could do them without the need for special chips for that, and that is clearly demonstrated in many games of the time. 3) By the processor could achieve much more moving wallpapers and Sprites on screen etc... 4) as everyone mistakenly believes, the genesis did not have a simultaneous color limitation and its available color palette was not 512, in fact that was the base and more colors came out of it, reaching almost 2,000 available colors, and about 200 simultaneously colors in moving images. 5) the famous transparencies of the snes genesis could be achieved without any problem with the light and shadow technique and had two other techniques to achieve it, dithering and by frames. 6) the sound of the genesis is much clearer because it does not use samples, but instead generates the audio itself with an internal instrument it has, and generates it in real time and could also play samples such as voices in a completely clear way, being able to achieve not only one but three channels of samples for it sounding at the same time. The quality depended on the quality of the sample that was introduced, that it was more or less compressed. But it did not depend on the machine. 7) While the snes only worked with samples and for that reason they were totally compressed samples and they sounded very bad, to save space. That's why most games sound very muddy and sound like they're inside a box or behind a wall. To understand it better, it was as if it had an internally compressed MP3 player, but it did not generate its own sound as the Sega Genesis did. I only know of very few games that have good sound. The only positive thing that the snes has in terms of sound is that it had a special internal system to achieve reverb and delay, so they could achieve a little more depth in the sound. Although the genesis also had techniques to achieve it but it was more complicated, that's why the sound of the genesis sounds drier to us, but that is easily solved by taking the audio from the genesis to a reproduction equipment and adding that delay or reverb effect of external way and problem solved. 8) the aesthetic appearance of the Sega genesis is incredible, classic and elegant while the aesthetic appearance of the snes is actually horrible, it looks like a cart, only the wheels are missing. 9) a higher screen resolution, the snes is seen with less resolution and more blurry, not sharp 10) the only advantage of the snes over the sega genesis is that it is much easier to program for it and many things could be achieved more easily. That is why I see the Sega genesis as an exclusive console dedicated to only experienced programmers, the quality depended on the programmers and not on the machine, the snes is one more console of the trade, but even so the genesis broke the face of the snes in European territory by far. That's why I say that the snes would be my second option, and I'm not detracting from the fact that it also has incredible games. All the best

+JAMIE LESTER It *could* have albeit at a lower quality sample, check out Toy Story to ear what I mean. The Mega Drive/Genesis version of Lion King is already one of the best if not the single best with its proper resolution + smooth frame rate etc. but if they had used the Toy Story technique for the title screen music (while the in-game tunes don't need any change) + improved a bit the colors use, this version would have simply destroyed the others.
@yohkom.79887 жыл бұрын
+JAMIE LESTER Amiga and SNES samples-based sound chips might be handy but they aren't without their flaws in addition to be kinda soulless compared to the Mega Drive which has a distinctive sound signature with its FM + PSG sound chips which act like real instruments not to mention the Mega Drive also has a DAC to play samples if required. Talking about this, you can check Sonic the Next Level for a Mega Drive game with *in-game* sampled music.
@leighbyford6356 жыл бұрын
Megadrive can sample but cart size and lack of hardware interup made samples much harder to do well compared to the other 2. Its not a DSP so uses the Z80 to run software drivers.The progamming of the drivers make a big difference. The Z80 is bit slow, would have been nice if they doubled its speed and just halved it when in MS mode.. The Amiga can do amazing music using samples but can run into trouble with only 4 channels , 2 if stereo. Sound effects often cut out instruments on amiga games. If the amiga is allowed to allocate all its cpu time to music its the best sounding here, obviously thats not possible during a game though. Title screens can be very nice though.

First, I think they all look and play great. The MD version clearly shows its limitations. The smaller color palette is really noticeable, especially in the title screens. The Amiga definitely looked best on the title screens. During gameplay, the Amiga and SNES versions both started off looking good. I like the color choices in the SNES version (which has nothing to do with which is better, just liked the choices better). The Amiga had more detail in the characters, which was especially noticeable when the first hyena shows up. SNES and MD looks.... softer. The Amiga looked more sharp and detailed. The Amiga sound was better.
@ryzmaker115 жыл бұрын
if by mega drive "limitations" you mean: -best resolution -best frame rate -best scrollings in some levels -crisper sound than snes and stereo unlike amiga (which has hard panned sound due to amiga's limited amount of sound channels) -many more visual details than amiga (such as the stages' name when they start; the herd of buffalo at "the stampede"; the flames at "pride rock"...) -and also apparently the best controls then yeah, you're right ;) and color wise, there are only a few instances where the other versions have the edge and this advantage is lessened once displayed with scanlines + filter so this is not even that much of an advantage so overall, the mega drive version is clearly the best followed by ms-dos then either snes or amiga depending if you prefer resolution (amiga) or content (snes)
