I just picked up one of these - a non running "Nigata 5" "Silent Generator". It's certainly silent when it's not running LOL. $500 Canadian was a bit too much but I paid it anyway. The only problem with it I can see is that the gasket in the fuel pump was chewed up and needed replacing. Looking forward to getting it running this weekend, fingers crossed. There's something to be said for simple mechanical diesel engines. My sailboat's inboard is a 1 cyl German Farymann diesel, my Tractor is a 3 cyl British Perkins diesel, now my generator is a 1 cyl Chinese-stolen Japanese Yanmar diesel. They just work, and when they don't, they're easy to fix.

I got mine during Hurricane Sandy - And it still works. I love the damn thing. But. It did not arrive in working condition and the entire system had to be reworked. Also the entire thing is made of chineseium - they copied the Yanmar L100 and the copy is so good you can use stock parts on to the 178f or whatever they call it. But I keep a stash of spare parts because they do break but anyone can fit it. It has atleast 5000 hours. - And they sip fuel. My experience reflects yours exactly. - I added a glow plug to mine. I'm planning on reworking the control panel for digital control

I’ve put over 100 hours on this unit and it seems to be great. I recommend a better than stock fuel filtration and use good oil and change frequently and make sure the screen filter is cleaned and they should last quite awhile. Main problem I ran into is that they don’t cool themselves properly in 90 degree days if ran extended periods. But in the 80s they can run all day.

@@muddstuffn I’m in Arizona, see how mine holds up to the heat. What size are the fuel lines from the factory, I want to do a fuel filter upgrade like that, looks like ones I saw on amazon marine style.

Mine did not like high 80s and 90s *F after running for awhile. Since its inclosed it doesnt get enough airflow to keep the engine cool at those temps. Might mount a fan to blow through it, that might help.

Good video. I quit buying batteries for these small generators. My new way is to install a heavy 4 prong female trailer wiring plug on the generator. Wire it to the starter or positive battery terminal and ground. Then take some jumper cables and install a male trailer plug on one end. Then you can start it off of any tractor, car or truck you have around.

I bought two gensets used for $400 CAD. Both need fixing, I ordered a capacitor from generator guru but the rest of the parts I've ordered from aliexpress. I've ordered two injectors, an injection pump, high pressure line, rockers, push rods, piston, head, air cleaner, muffler, and a fuel tank. That was about $600 CAD. I'm going to sell the one 5500w after I fix the capacitor and injector, and keep the rebuilt engine only off the bigger one with the 186fa. No idea wtf I'm going to do with a 12hp engine but I'm sure I will mad scientist it into something

check for restrictions in the fuel supply to injection pump and start with changing the fuel filter. Ive also seen the Fuel shutoff solenoids get warm and shut themselves down prematurely but make sure your getting enough fuel to the pump first.

There is a guy with a KZbin channel Boy Kalikot. He works on these engines in a lot of his videos. I have no idea what he is saying (Filipino) but I understand what he is doing. He took an injector apart on one and spread the spring that puts pressure on the pintle to stop one from smoking. They must fatigue or the shims get worn causing it to inject at too low of pressure. I ordered an injector for mine but if I couldn't afford it I would try it.

Please keep posting. FYI, I'm new to this diesel engine generator for about a year now. I just do basic maintenance like changing the oil to prolong it. I never bother to know more. The 12v side should be pretty straight forward. The 120 might be a little tricky but should be similar to other gensets if you can get a detailed diagram. Might try Aurora or Durostar. They are still selling similar units and may be able to get detailed info. Even if its not exact it maybe helpful.

To start a Chinese air cooled diesel in winter, slowly pour hot water on the cylinder. Purity of oil and fuel is important. The 168F is a small 196 CC diesel with an angled cylinder built by at least two Chinese companies, with castings and parts differences. Ether is a big hazard to use. A goofy squirt will blow up like a grenade inside. The fit and castings are excellent. Loose motors should avoid high RPM but idle must be noticably above stall speed. You should avoid full power, when you see lots of smoke. This motor is about twice the size of a 168F. Don't use a dirty funnel for oil. 15W140 is universal. The crankcase will run way cold in winter. Augment a cabin with solar panels.
