I definitely prefer the original Maria's delivery, with the way she actually sounds like two different people instead of Maria just saying something that only Mary would know about. But the new James's performance shows a bit more nuance in how he's struggling with wanting his wife back and having a replacement throw herself at him-well, not throwing as much as the original did, but still.

I love how Maria flips back and forth between herself and Mary and when James asked "Aren't you Maria?" She looks at him dead in the eyes, her face darkened by the obstructing light on the opposite end, as her expression turned dead pan with just a sharp remark. "I'm not your Mary." One of my favorite lines in the scene which sadly got tone down in the remake. I think the VAs are doing the best they can, but Maria/Mary was probably one of the best actors in the OG that it would be impossible to replicate because she was an amateur actor. I love this new version of James though, probably more than the OG.

I think we have an interesting trade off here. I really prefer the original VA for Maria in this scene, there’s just such an interesting balance of sweet, seductive, and bite from her that the new one kind of lacks. Specifically with the delivery of “I’m not your Mary” being so sharp and biting, truly one of my favorite line readings in the series. The new VA is great, but the direction she was given for the scene just doesn’t reach the same heights. Her tone is pretty consistent through the scene, so you don’t get that same disturbing shift of tones that felt like more than one person is talking in the original. And as many have said, the lack of scorn in the “I’m not your Mary” is really missed here. On top of that, the new game lacks the ethereal lighting of the original scene that made her seem so hollow, with the shadows constantly cast over her eyes to make them seem like empty sockets (I can give a little leeway there since it could’ve been too complex for the new game’s lighting engine to replicate compared to the pre-rendered cutscenes of the original, but still sad to see that detail lost). James’ VA though was great. The original was fine, you can sense the panic and confusion, but has the classic PS2 amateur voice acting. The new actor though really sells the conflict in James here: he’s shocked, conflicted, and at times almost seems dissociated from reality trying to make sense of things. Plus the way he just stares off while occasionally shifting his glance to Maria in the chair while trying to make sense of what to do in the end makes the scene far more compelling on his end. So all in all I’d say the original scene has a far more interesting Maria, while the new one has a far more interesting James.

100% agreed. That incredibly cutting "I'm not your Mary." from the original is by far my favorite line in the game, and the voice direction just didn't quite get the new VA to hit that note, which is really sad. As you said, the new James voice is amazing, though. One thing I dislike about this scene in the Remake (and that's something I noticed throughout the remake in general) is that there is way too little pause between lines. Those extra milliseconds can change the pace of the whole scene, and I wish they'd fine-tuned that better.

@@doppelgangerV That doesn't refute the point that the remake completely missed the point of Maria - the only distinction there is who is to blame. The old maria was born from a wish of James. OG Maria wants James to want her over Mary
@EntertheFray12 ай бұрын
@@yvngleenk This doesn't work. Remember, Maria isn't actually real - She's a manifestation born into existence from the subconscious wishes of James. If he didn't want her to be seductive and flirtatious towards him and have that allure, she wouldn't have came from a background of stripper/poledancing in SH. The remake Maria still does have that background for a reason. She still says pretty much the same lines as OG maria, she still acts in a flirtatious or seductive manner towards games. But the voice actress isn't leaning into the seduction in her delivery. Calm and comforting isn't what James wants. James was denied intimate contact for years due to Mary's illness. It made her grow bubbles on her skin and lose hair - so after years of this, anybody is going to be pent up sexually, and because of this, his eyes start wandering elsewhere. Why else do you think the enemies are nurses in skimpy outfits and pairs of walking thighs? James was turning his eyes elsewhere, but felt extremely guilty doing so because his wife was dying. So for his wish of how Mary was like, a wild, seductive, sexy, flirtatious Mary makes perfect sense - all of the things he missed. Calm and collected doesn't work to reflect this accurately. Nor would it make any coherent sense to make her have a background in stripping, yet be this calm and collected woman. The two aren't really associated with each other. So a calm and collected Maria does in fact miss the point of why Maria exists at all. OG Maria is trying to replace Mary as well, so that doesn't make sense what you're saying. This is just really really bad cope from remake fans. It's not so much that the voice actress isn't skilled - she is, but she's not suited for the role that Maria demands.
@victorkaranja14203 ай бұрын
Yeah it really does feel like the only way to describe the remake is "doing too much" like parts of the script and delivery on his end are better in the remake but the overuse of movie direction and that ambient sound in the background tries too hard to be "spooky", like in the og scenes the camera feels like you are in there with the characters the way it's static and placed in ways that make you see them how he does even if not through his eyes. Even when she talks, the distinct lack of anything in the background is what makes it creepy, it's just you and her or whatever "she" is, with the music working as a wind up to any possible scare

I'll explain the best I can, and I'm assuming you played the remake at least, so you know who Maria is, her role in the game's narrative, and the psychoanalytical themes behind her. In the OG, there is heavy contrast shrouding Maria's eyes and jaw line in an attempt to minimize the emotional expression on her face, making her less human. She also switches between Mary, replicating her cadence, and Maria. Mary's cadence is soft, kind, and caring, while Maria's is flirty and outright lustful. The voice actress here seamlessly goes to and from these identities, adding to the torment James has already been facing through his journey through the town via its monsters and Pyramid Head, both physical manifestations of James'shadows, and witnessing Maria constantly dying. At this point, James doesn't know what is real anymore. He's thrown back by Maria replicatinng Mary's cadence and having specific memories only Mary and him would know. He has been through the ringer, and the town continues to tempt him with what he has repressed into his shadow, both what he has done and elements of his character that are deemed unacceptable in terms of cultural normalcy. The remake sells James better as someone who can't make heads or tales of what's going on anymore; however, Maria doesn't replicate what the original had established. Her face is shrouded in shadow anymore, removing the inhuman appearance that was meant to set up the preceeding lines; her delivery of her lines that are meant to show that she has Mary's memories lacks the cadence of Mary, so it just comes off as Maria talking to james and further removes the inhuman quality to her presence; her delivery of "I'm not your Mary!" lacks that abrupt, stinging bite that original have, which further removes the inhuman quality to her presence; and to top it all off, she doesn't say the line "Well, come get me. I cant do anything behind these bars," which removes the flirtatious and lustful demeanor the original Maria had. Bloober had a consulatory team assist them with this remake as to modernize the game's characterizations, more than likely to avoid public criticism towards sexual abuse and overly sexualizing women in media, hence why she is the only character from the original to have been redesigned both visually and characterization wise. They worked around this via different approaches, such as the wedding wring on her finger acting as further torment for James when it touches his fact, but I'd argue that the constant switching between the two cadences is more effective. I hope this helps explain things.

I think new comers to Silent Hill, or those who have played the originals and dont get the voice direction, dont seem to realize why the original voice overs for some of the characters in the game are both odd yet a bit hammy. Silent Hill is heavily inspired off of the work of David Lynch, who when creating work makes it so the dialouge has this eerie and unsettling, yet hamminess towards its approach, accenting the horror of individual scenes, and the overall narrative and themes. I will say the hamminess in the game's dialogue is more pronounced than his work, which is sort of an homage to older, low-budget horror films, which was exactly what Team Silent was making - low budget horror games, and the reason for this is Team Silent was a collection of throwaway workers working at Konami at the time who were essentially put together to make non-essential projects for the company. The ironic part is that they ended up makig some of the most celebrated horror games in gaming history. 😂 The town itself is inspired from Twin Peaks, the hotel in Stanley Kubrick's film The Shining, and the zone from Andrei Tarkovsky's film Stalker.

After going through the sewers full of monsters and finding her just... siting there and acting like she was waiting as she didn't get killed hours before. I really didn't feel confortable. Don't get me wrong, the remake is an absolute masterpiece. I even think the intro scene was better than the original and so many others, but this one was special (just remember that this scene was even included in the trailer), but they missed the point. Not the actors, but the direction. Shot out to Bloober for the rest, they made a good job and it will be remembered.
@michael.tardaguila2 ай бұрын
Best back-and-forth camera conversation ever! Congrats Bloober Team! Maria is an individual, until Pyramid-head stabbed her, and changed her definition in the story. She became another embodiment of Mary and know some detail just James and Mary know. By then, she has a purpose, I also think this is reason why Ernest Baldwin warned Maria about James is because of the Pyramid head weapon. You see, even one of the creators, Masahiro Ito, said "Pyramid head's weapon is large one-side of a scissor/shear (thought to be large blade, but not), and depict James has the other side of the scissor tip", meant that Mary was a victim of Pyramid head, although James killed and ended Mary's life for the Pyramid head. In the elevator chase scene, Pyramid head (is James, as Ernest Baldwin warned) stabbed Maria. So, Ernest warned Maria for Pyramid head, not exactly James. Now since, Maria is now a puppet for the cult, her purpose is now realized, where she is the representation of the Goblet, while James is the White Chrism, and the Philosopher's stone is their child. The cult's demonic deity goddess DOESN'T want Maria to die because the next person it will possess is James's offspring. It is important for the demonic deity goddess. James is more than the 21 sacraments, or the 21 sacrifices. His symbolic meaning (sacrament) will bring expansion to the occult power. All might be answered, maybe, if Konami and Bloober Team will explain the story in Silent Hill 5 or future game. They should continue the story of Maria, James, Laura and Ernest Baldwin, since Eddie and Angela already ended their lives here.
