I have never played the original game myself, and I was not even born when it was released in 2001. However, I have had the privilege of listening to firsthand accounts from my partner regarding his experiences with it when younger. He is somewhat older than me. I was never into games that much myself, but I am planning on giving this one a try for the fond memories he had with it. We spent an evening viewing the full original game's cutscenes on KZbin for me, akin to a movie night, and I must admit, the experience was profoundly moving, especially at the end. Having never played it myself, I share your open mind, for without this remake, I likely wouldn't have the opportunity to experience it. I hope that the remake is treated with the same level of care and passion as was by Team Silent.

I’m glad that even though you’re into games, you’ve still had a chance to experience Silent Hill 2’s story. It’s one of the best in gaming and I can only hope it’s done justice in the remake. Either way, I will play it, and if it’s bad, I’ll always have the original. We as a society should always keep an open mind. It’s healthy, at the end of the day.

Silent Hill 2 needs a port. Unfortunately, the original game code was lost. So Silent Hill 2 needs a remake that is so faithful to the original that most people can't tell the difference and think it is a port.

This is probably one of the only takes I've seen that's fair, logical, and considers everything. I've said it before, but I believe the Silent Hill fanbase has become as toxic to the series as Konami has been. All the hollow takes are from people who have already decided they hate this game before it even comes out. I love the original Team Silent games. I don't think any games in the series will top them for me. That doesn't mean there can't be good games in the series that do different things and evolve. I have seen nothing direly wrong with this game thus far. Does that mean it'll be great? No. Does anybody complaining know a damn thing right now? Also no. Let the game come out and go into it with an open mind and then form an opinion.

You can't really fault people for being incredibly cynical at this remake when Konami is clearly just going all in on remakes now because they see Capcom has gotten success with theirs. They contributed to the death of the Metal Gear franchise and spent many years handing the SH IP around to people that just did not understand what made the original Team Silent games good, and the fact they handed off the remake of one of their most beloved games to a dev team that has a rocky history with making other survival horror series doesn't instill any hope or hype in anyone. I will say, I am atleast looking forward to F solely because of Ryukishi's involvement as a writer.

Thank you! Yeah the fam base is definitely a hard one to please. I think it’s important to go in with an open mind. No game dev plans to make a bad game. They want to make a good game so we should at least give them the chance to prove themselves.

Maybe I’m just odd but I’ve never seen Silent Hill as subtle. Not when you have scenes like Pyramid Head raping the 4-legged monsters, Angela and the knife, Eddie throwing up proclaiming innocence, a burning stairwell that’s “always like that”, the In Water ending, and of course the scene where it straight up shows the footage of James suffocating Mary. Obtuse maybe Subtle definitely not. The series seems about as subtle as jackhammer to the face. And for the record, I don’t mind the lack of my perceived subtlety, I love the series (at least 1-4).

I get what you’re saying, but the story never out and out tells you what’s going on. Throughout most of it, up until the reveal, everything is implied but never explained, hinted at in writing and items you find, or scenes like you mentioned above. We get an idea something is wrong with Eddie, but the depths of that are not revealed until his final scenes. But this stuff is hinted at along the way, and discovery is fun haha. The subtle hints comes things like Eddie’s calmness eating pizza, or the posters on the wall talking about ‘Physical Beauty’ referring to his body dysmorphia, among other things.

Hi Nick, love the video, I'm nervous as hell for the remake. I will say that the only positive I can really take is that having not had a chance to play any of the original games in their purest format, I will get a chance to experience silent hill 2 remake from the get-go. I know it will never ever capture the same feeling as the original but I'm holding out hope the general atmosphere and music will make up for whatever blunders may come our way.

I'll give them a chance, but I do already worry they're missing the mark in a few places. Like, the subtlety of James's football player build and more masculine facial features... I actually like their model way better aesthetically, but it says "Harry" more than James. James actually disturbed me quite a few times by the undertones of watching this fairly large man beat feminine figures to death, long before I ever knew the reality of his story. It doesn't look like they caught the fugue state he's supposed to be in at the beginning, like he's tripping balls; the shaking hands don't work. And the acting needs a particular tone... dreamy at first, then gradually lucid. James and Mary should look and sound like normal, sincere people... that relatability is essential.

Like all the 4 main games, James weird expressions in the og game are between an art of subtility and weird technical issues. Fog in the first game and the first scene with the camera going in a weird way were just a result of technical difficulties, and still, it just so happen to have a deeper meaning with the themes of the game. To know if all was intensionnal or not is impossible until the developers tell about it...at least if they remember lol

I watched the trailer with as much of an open mind as I could muster, but…I think visually, it’s beautiful. Very detailed, very realistic, what I would expect from Bloober team based on past work. But the character models leave something to be desired for me, and the combat reminds me so much of Homecoming in the worst way. There’s something uncanny about James, but in that…I dunno, he just LOOKS like a video game character to me now? I can’t really place what’s off about him and the other characters, but there’s something…I dunno…synthetic about them. I, too, would love a remaster instead of a remake. Doubt we’ll ever get that.

The resident evil remakes have identical QTE’s for grab attacks-literally a button coming up telling you to mash X. I don’t see the problem. And it’s not a bad thing to be “like resident evil” in this circumstance because contrary to everyone’s simplistic notion of the games, the remakes’ combat is designed to be weighty and clunky and make you feel helpless. It’s surprisingly easy to get grabbed and bitten

For me I really dont care what they do once the atmosphere and story are spot on. The animations and combat are of very little importance to me. Maria's character and dialogue are of upmost importance, her character is very complex but the most interesting of all, considering what she actually is. I want to see her chewing James out of it again too lol

The combat looks like homecoming or something, not a great sign. I know tank controls and fixed camera angles is too old school for most people but I can't imagine those changes not having a negative impact and the overall experience losing it's identity. Konami trying the Resident Evil remake route wasn't a good move.

Right now I feel they need to cut back on James' facial animations in the cut scenes. In the original where James looks at himself in the mirror, his face has a blank, almost serene look--it's hard to read what's going on with him. It's not until he drags his hand in front of his face that maybe something is off about him. In the new trailer, all that subtlety is gone. He looks like he's doing a Deniro impression; like a bad actor trying too hard to emote. Another quick scene in the new trailer is where he grabs the noose--his face is a giant grimace; it's just too much.

I really understand the skepticism, ive been a fan of the original titles since the PS1 days and have been critical of every game post SH3. aside from the bastardization of the story the next biggest concern was that it was going to be a walking sim and this at least puts those concerns to rest. I think visually, the game looks really good and i really hate the constant nitpicking its getting by "fans" that really want this to fail. Will it be as good as the original? No, but how could it? Temper your expectations and judge it on its merits UPON RELEASE and if it sucks we can all bash it together.

I think we should replay SH2 and unveil the vendage over our eyes on how the game really is. Maybe have it too high on a pedestal. Some of the original voice acting and script is quite bad actually. And on top of that we've also all grown up, so we're not afraid of the same things as we were kids. I have my hopes, hopefully its not RE4. But also not 21 year old clunky combat.

Funny enough, I actually have comete faith in a 2024 retelling of this game by bloober team. They say you can't ever go back home. This isn't going to be a game for us old school fans that have played this game for twenty years and have watched ever game analysis we can find for SH2 and also want to play that specific game with its bad controls, campy voice acting, fixed camera angles and poor gameplay mechanics, but with updated graphics. This game needs to appeal to a more modern audience if Silent Hill is going to have a chance moving forward. It looks to me that the game is at least trying to recapture that atmosphere from 2001, and I think for the most part that they have. We have to remember that the original game really had a lot of limitations to work with and a lot of the work that might seem intentional was really a limit of budget. Specifically, facial animations at the time were expensive since they were all being done by hand. And it's not like in the cute scenes James is always blank faced, he has a surprising amount of emotions when you can actually see the face. Most of the time James doesn't even look at the camera and the little we see of this game are some rather tense scenes in the original game.

I think Bloober is illustrating how they’re already off the SH path and that’s by showing off combat first. Though the first games combat WAS dogshit, it never felt like it was a focus of Team Silent. Then hitting it up so early on this road to remake, feels like they want to make it better, which is good, but if it becomes the primary focus, THAT is NOT good. Bloober was NEVER going to win in this scenario. Only people who will jump on with them are people who don’t really know SH or have never played their game.
@DeepDives
@DeepDives 4 ай бұрын
That’s the hard part. Bloober Team’s track record isn’t great and focusing on the combat doesn’t help their case in showing that they truly understand Silent Hill 2.

@@DeepDivesI admittedly haven’t played any Bloober games, but all I e heard is that they’ve used mental illness in their games and have handled poorly in every case. Mind you James is only feeling massive amounts of guilt, which isn’t a mental illness by definition, but it does lead to depression and thoughts of suicide. I just think that even if someone came in and somehow improved on the first game, the public would reject it.

My problem is why didn't they remake SH1 first? Don't they know how to count, it starts from 1 goddammit. Istg this is a cashgrab via nostalgia, only remaking the most popular game in the franchise. Improved combat and modern graphics are fine but they really should've stick to bizarre fixed camera angles as that's what makes sh unique and cinematic as we get to see characters, enemies and environment from different perspectives. Modern graphics+ fixed camera angles would be lovely. Nowadays, modern games, all we get to see is the same old boring "stare at the back of the head" camera angle.

Yeah didn’t really want a remake of SH2, honestly doesn’t really need one, not sure why SH1 didn’t get a remake first seems kinda weird considering it’s much harder to get younger people to play ps1 games vs a ps2 game and a simple remaster with updated visuals, not to mention that every time they do these remakes they always change the voice actors and it never fits right to me.

I want to see the remake succeed, i really do. I am a SH2 hardcore fan.... Yet the more i see from the project, the more worried i get. Some things simply don't add up... Video footage could be old, they say. Gun sounds might be placeholders. Animations may be unfinished. Then why show it? To get the public to say unfinished game looks unfinished? What? Makes zero sense! Who greenlit this? Let's set aside the the lore changes they made, that also worry me deeply... the things listed above are enough to make anyone sceptical about any highly anticipated project.
