Good news! Despite the great sucess of our mk 14 torpedos, we at the Bureau of Ordnance have been hard at work developing a new and improved wakeless electric torpedo. Unfortunately development has hit a bit of a snag, as no one seems to be able to agree on what the new weapon should be called. The leadership of BuOrd is currently split between either mk 18 or mk 14-2 electric boogaloo. However, as soon as this issue has been resolved, the new torpeods will be ready for service.

Actually Ice Cream machines were not added on submarines as standard equipment by the navy. Most were installed by crews and frequently broke down. This according to the book by Edward Beach and his experiences on the USS Trigger. One of the benefits of lifeguarding, picking up downed flyers, was the aircraft carrier rewarding the submarine with 50 gallons of ice cream when returning the flyer.

Excellent work again Dev! Very interesting to hear your views on the ice cream machine and the AC. I had read somewhere that the AC was primarily to protect the electrics of the boat, with crew comfort a secondary consideration, and that is what I believed for years. Brilliant that you found actual documentation that clearly states that was not the case. Which makes perfect sense now that I think about it. Like you said, the sub is a weapons delivery system, it's whole purpose is to get the torpedoes to where they need to be, and deliver them to the enemy in an efficient and effective manner. ANYTHING that makes this process more efficient and effective is a prime consideration! And that definitely includes crew comfort and efficiency. PS You lucky lucky lucky SOB! Years I been playing this game and only sunk one or 2 heavy cruisers . . . you get 3 in just a few episodes :-) Good hunting my friend, and please do keep[ up the excellent work, I am absolutely loving this series 👍

Wow, such great information about how the demographics of the Navy changed so rapidly, and why. I had no idea about that, but it makes a LOT of sense. Also, it needs to be pointed out that Josephus Daniels, Secretary of the Navy 1913-1921 was also responsible for spurring a successful racist insurrection 15 years earlier in Wilmington, North Carolina, leading to the overthrow of duly elected black government in that city. Great information there on sub rescues- I do believe Mr. Collins would've been what we called a "hot runner." Nice to hear an aviator was actually earning their keep while being a passenger! ;)

Devin, great to see more SH4 content from you! i hang on to every minute and story . As you know i also play in the same time period. I have a question though: everyone has always told me that i should never fire torpedoes if they would have to turn more than a few degrees from 0, the way my tube is pointed. You blew my mind getting hits with for AND aft tubes without tons of maneuvering to make a straight line shot. have i been lied to? Can you basically broadside torpedo attack from a parallel course? how far can a mk10 and mk14 torpedo turn away from the boat and still expect to hit a target?
@devinhorner23583 жыл бұрын
Great question! I think this would be a good topic to talk about in an episode. Torpedo guidance at the time wasn’t always reliable, so minimizing gyro angle minimized malfunction or calculation errors. I think the Mark 14s can turn up to an angle of +/- 140 degrees off course, with the Mark 10s slightly less. In the game, when you look at the Torpedo management page, the stats actually include that information. The Submarine Torpedo Fire Control Manual (1950), section 810, tells us that shots with gyros less than 30 are “straight shots” while those over 30 degrees are “curved shots” and that: “The greatest advantage of straight fire (small gyro angles) is that errors in torpedo run have no appreciable effect on the solution. Therefore, when the range is inaccurate, as in stadimeter and telemeter scale approaches, the submarine must maneuver for a small gyro angle shot.” Conversely, curved shots lead to greater torpedo course errors and are not recommended when accurate ranges are not available, because of the greater chance for misses or mechanical failure. A turning torpedo can jam its guidance and circle back on the firing sub. I’ve had this happen in the game, though it is quite rare. Having said that, it still all depends on the skipper and the tactical situation. Both German and American subs sometimes used the method of paralleling targets, usually for surfaced, longer-range night attacks on convoys. Here’s the link to the manual if you want to take a real deep dive (pun intended): maritime.org/doc/attack/index.htm

Great video and love the history about the ice cream machines. Also, since you talked about POWs, I'd like to ask what are your views surrounding the controversy of allied submarines attacking smaller unarmed craft such as sampans and junks with deck guns in the later stages of the war or about the actions of the USS Wahoo during their 3rd war patrol?
@devinhorner23583 жыл бұрын
The US strategy was to starve out an island nation, so I think that made sinking Japan's fishing vessels a primary part of the war effort. I suppose the idea of it being controversial or not circles back to the arguments for and against submarine warfare at all, which dated back to WWI when subs were viewed by many as pirates or murderers rather than honorable combatants. As to whether it was fair or not, the Japanese had themselves been sinking small unarmed inter-island ferries around Hawaii since the opening day of the war, so in the end all countries were on equal moral ground. The Wahoo incident is very complex and machine gunning survivors is an interesting topic so I'll probably be dedicating an entire in-game report on it.
